I remember when Michael Eisner introduced Angela on a TV episode and said that this was the first time the title song, "Beauty and the Beast" was being performed anywhere. It felt like we were witnessing a part of Disney history in the making.

The late Howard Ashman’s contributions to Beauty and the Beast simply can’t be overlooked. He was really the driving force behind musicalizing the film (along with Alan Menkin of course), but he knew this project was his swan song and really gave it his all. It’s tragic that he died of AIDS a few months before the film was released and he didn’t get to see the amazing reception the film and its accompanying music received. I hold the music of Beauty and the Beast to be the magnum opus of Ashman and Menkin’s partnership and their individual careers.

You are absolutely 100% correct. There is a documentary that covers the entire ' *Making of Beauty and the Beast* ' history, and they spend quite a bit of time covering Howard Ashman's contributions as that driving force and artistic genius behind the films success. -- Later in the documentary, they tell of how the animators and directors visited Howard in the hospital, days before he passed, and shared with him the film's massive success at the NY Film Festival. Orbach had a successful Broadway carreer before becoming famous in TV 😉He was the first ever to sing the wonderful Burt Bacharach song "I'll never fall in love again", in the musical Promises! Promises!
