Snow White had many strengths though. Her compassion was a strength, her kindness was a strength, her adversary was a strength, her fearlessness was a strength, her ability to summon animals with her voice was a strength and super power. The fact that she held on to all of this despite the wrong doings that were done to her is a strength that most people do not have. Just because she was feminine, liked to tidy up and wanted to be loved by a man doesn’t mean little girls shouldn’t look up to her. People blame the feminists for this direction that the world seems to be going in, but it doesn’t help that society and especially men have held a very negative view on femininity and all things feminine and womanly being considered weak. That definitely plays into all of this “woke” nonsense of every new female protagonist having to be a super strong girl warrior who can do everything a man can do. I think we as a society need to recognize that femininity has different strengths that masculinity doesn’t have and vice versa. Yin and Yang people, equal importance but not equal as in the same.

Hey there, person from America here. I absolutely agree with you. Hell, we couldn't have also added the poisoned comb or the corset lacing? The main actress is absolutely unlikeable, skin color or not. Snow White is supposed to be understanding, patient, and kind...this woman is none of those things. The original tale may not have had true love's kiss but the ending was absolutely hardcore. But yeah, the few speaking for the majority is an absolutely dogshit mentality my country needs to snap out of. I am Latina and I 100% agree that there is no reason for a Latina to be cast in this role. Even if she were White-Latina (which she clearly is not), she would almost definitely be Southern European, not Germanic. I have actually had to directly quote the story to people because they did not want to accept the fact that it specifically mentions her skin color being white. But I also had a huge problem with them casting her as Maria in Westside Story too. They absolutely will not let us have our Puerto Rican lead.

That was also in the original . . . She did clean and cook for them and they did acknowledge her as the princess and heir to the throne. The old fairytales ARE problematic (by which I mean layered/unclear/the morals are not always explicit/parents need to explain and interpret them to their children), but that's why it's better for parents to read/tell them to their children to cater the lessons to the individual child instead of plopping them down in front of the TV to watch the Disneyfied version meant to cater to the general public instead of that specific child. If a child needs to learn about cleanliness then yes, Snow's hard work and desire to keep the dwarves' house clean should be emphasized. If it's about respect for others, then Snow and the dwarves learning to respect each other's differences should be emphasized. If it's bravery, then the prince's quest should be given more focus and he should face and overcome dangers, etc. FYI, if my kids want to watch the original animated movie, I wouldn't forbid it on account of the content, I think the content is fine, I object more to the screen time and the, in my opinion, lazy parenting style of allowing passive and solitary TV watching to be their sole source of learning about stories.

The beauty of telling children stories yourself instead of letting the TV and Disney raise them, is that you can change elements of the story you don't like. The way hollywood is doing the whole "girl boss" thing is taking the most obnoxious traits that we ridicule in men, and putting a woman in the role, and it is somehow "amazing." Being cocky, condescending, prideful, bossy, and selfish does not look good on anyone- male or female. No one wants to see a hero have those qualities. That is why so many movies fail today. Making Snow White obnoxious by not "needing anybody" or by just barging into the dwarves house and contrinuting nothing, doesn't make her "fairest in the land." That seems like pride and selfishness to me. Changing the nature of Snow White's softness to this "hard, warrior princess" is eye roll worthy. Plus, there is NOTHING wrong with needing to be rescued. There have been MANY times in my life when I needed to rely on family, friends, and sometimes the kindness of strangers to help me overcome obsticles. No one can live life fully alone. We need one another. I was never a huge Snow White fan, to be honest. As a kid, I founs it too slow moving and boring, and I did not like Snow White's singing voice. If I, someone who never really liked the film, am annoyed by this, imagine how many actual fans are livid. (Plus.... Rachel Z is very obnoxious and annoying and unlikeable, so that doesn't help anything either lol)

It was the FIRST full-length, technicolour, animated film, my Great-grandfather who was a very manly man, saved his wages so that he could take my great-grandmother and my grandfather to the cinema for the very first time (as they couldn't really afford it) for his birthday. 50 years later, my disabled grandfather, who was an absolute prince among men, got out of bed, and even though he was in incredible pain (he was an injured veteran) took his 9 grandchildren, on his own, to the cinema to watch the remastered version and spoiled us all day 😊 in 2016, 5 months before he died, he watch the film again during a movie day with his 14 great-grandchildren and regaled us with stories about the first time he watched it with his father, it was amazing.This new remake hurts my heart, and I have completely gone off Rachel Zeigler. Shame on Disney. Some things mean more than being PC. I think she was just a little girl who was learning to understand herself and understand other people and how to celebrate people for being unique and beautiful in their own ways. It is a part of growing up to learn how to find your own beauty in yourself and accept and celebrate beauty in other people. Our current younger generations do NOT know how to do that, and they should. @@this_is_my_stop I get your point however there is a stark difference in the way both characters are presented. Pocahontas is not described as beautiful because of her copper skin she is simply a beautiful Native American woman. Whereas, Snow White is described to be beautiful partly because of her pale white skin. There is a difference and kids pick up on it. Wanting to look like a character because you find them beautiful versus Wanting to look like a character because you’re told their skin colour is what’s considered beautiful. Do you see the difference? A good way to fix this would be to simply describe Snow White as fair skinned like many remakes have done instead of attributing her beauty to the whiteness of her skin.

Also, in the original Grimm's story, Snow White is only SEVEN years old when she gets chased away from the castle. Considering that, her survival skills are pretty good. it’s like they forgot how to write admirable, strong female characters (like Esmeralda, Tiana and Mulan, who were all people of color, too). They want to write strong women but end up writing annoying, entitled Mary Sue characters who are already the best at everything and are really bitchy and entitled about it. Tiana, Esmeralda and Mulan earned respect and admiration because they fought for things bigger than themselves and didn’t let any obstacles get in their way. Mulan and Esmeralda put themselves into very dangerous situations just to help or save their people/ family. Tiana knew about the fact she was marginalised as a black person in 1930s America, but that didn’t stop her from wanting to realise, and eventually realising her dream even one second. They showed their strengths in their wit, their dreams, their love for the people around them and their selflessness, without losing their femininity. Did Disney fire all the good writers or something?!

When you were comparing the two movies, I noticed that the cartoon Snow White had a pleasant tone to her voice as she distributed different chores. She also makes sure she helps clean up as well. However, in the live action, Snow White demands others do all of the chores, there's no kindness in her voice. I'm curious, what is the love action snow white doing while everyone else is working?

There is nothing wrong with being loved and wishing to find love. The problem is that for example I as a girl was very indoctrinated by stuff like Disney movies in the sense that I based my worth on male attention. Because that ALWAYS was the climax. A man saving you and marrying you. Without even knowing your personality much anyways, especially in Snow White. At least Arielle and the Prince got to know each other but snow white only met the prince once, is 14 and then ready to marry him? I am sorry but that girl is a child, she should dream about the childhood her stepmother never allowed her to have, not about becoming a child bride.
@feelstora32 ай бұрын
@@justarandomgirlvx3578 I've made comments on this too but if you consider the context and the time it the fairytale is set in, it actually makes sense. Doesn't make it good or right considering our time and standards, but back then it was very common and also people didn't even get that old to begin with. I understand people feeling uncomfortable with it, so your point is valid but it is a fairytale and never meant to tell a complex story with well-developed characters, still it accomplishs to establish them well (for the time it is set and for when the film was made). Also considering length of the movie. Also storytelling in fairytales sets a different pace. They get married usually the next day, not implying there wasn't time for them to get to know each other, but wasn't what the focus was on. Considering fairytales were initally just being delivered by telling rather than written. Even the brothers Grimm were just "retelling" them (which is also why there are multiple versions of each fairytale, some being pretty dark. Compared to Hans Christian Andersen which were more complex and implied more time passed between scenes (For example The Little Mermaid... a lot of time passes between her saving the prince and then becoming a human after being able to observe the prince). Especially fairytales seem to be more of a concept with different versions, Disney jist being one of them. There different versions of Snow White too when the prince and Snow White had different encounters. It might not be considered timely but the setting is differently and fits into fairytale concept and not modern concept or to what it's opposed to yet people seem to forget that. Personally I don't even mind the damsel in distress and being saved by a prince when it's clearly shown the woman's strength is somewhere else. If you have more time to explore and expand the story of course you are able to give more depth to them which is natural but it also depends on how vast your interpretation of them is or on which value you decide to focus.
@justarandomgirlvx35782 ай бұрын
@feelstora3 Don't get me wrong, Disney's Snow White makes sense for the time it was released. And that movie will never be gone, people are allowed to enjoy old movies, I am conflicted however whether I would want my child to see such movies knowing how it effected me and peers at least this wouldn'tbe the only input. That's why I think it is not a bad idea to change the story structurally in a remake (although i might not not necessarily be happy with the version that was created now, but let's see the movie first to judge). Even if it is "just" a children's movie, the characters deserve to be well written and the themes should be fleshed out and outdated ideas adjusted. Also a little side note: People did get very old actually. The low life expectancy comes from child mortality, so likely if you survived being a toddler you would die pretty old. Then people realised kids as young as 14 are not fit to reproduce because they were aware of the risks of birth for a girl who barely started puberty (they also usually got their periods later than that). So while sometimes people got engaged young/married young it mostly happened for political reasons to people growing up in nobility and didn't have anything to do with dying young. The small folk even married much later usually because of the lack of political necessity.
