Willow reviews are back! Just before Disney deletes all of the Willow TV series off Disney+. This is a review of Willow: Behind the Magic their behind the scenes making of special which includes part mockumentary elements. And if they are deleting all of Willow, then I HAD to give it the goodbye it deserved and cover the making of too! Like the show, it has some genuinely funny elements but also talks about how "this isn't nostalgia" but instead "takes the IP and makes it forward looking to update it to a more modern perspective". We all know what that means! This making of really doubles down on everything you would expect Willow to be, and shows that they have absolutely no idea why it failed. But what did you think of what you saw? Let me know your thoughts down below and as always, thanks for watching :)

Dude, you know what this means? Everyone who watched Willow and then your reviews is in a brotherhood now. We're united by a shared experience that can never be repeated. No one else will understand what we went through. The wagon hatred, the cool little guy with the knives that Willow didn't lift a finger to help, the worm secretions, and overshadowing everything else the monumental evil of Kit... It's like a secret shared language of suffering, hobo sign for the modern world, references to characters and scenes that only we remember. This is how communities are born.

My daughter and I sat through the first two episodes and then she asked why I was putting her through the torment. Then we watched the original movie. At the time it was a decent flic, nothing earth shatteringly amazingly, paradigm shifting, just decent. But after 2 eps of the TV series it looks like pure untarnished, 12 Oscar nomination gold. It kills me that they dont understand the point of Willow: Aurora Danon was never the savior. She was the cataylst that brought the real hero: willow. That was the twist. Because of her, Willow came to his true potential and stopped the evil witch. She was always there as a part of his story. Imagine thinking 'powerful woman' is more important than a story thatbcan be relatable to anyone.
@Synlidwirh
@Synlidwirh Жыл бұрын
She did more in the books and at least was inspired by her caretakers to do it and Willow. The show though paints Sorcha and Madmartigan in a terrible light... they were given this child to take care of and raise who united the people... and made her into a maid... and ignored.

Yes! It even says at the Beginning that she would "Bring about the end of Bavmorda", not that should would become powerful and defeat her, bring about the defeat. That is was actually Bavmorda's single-minded need to destroy the child that ended up being her own Downfall in the end.

A small part of me still thinks that with a decent writer, there'd have been a half decent action/adventure show for kids here. If you cut out basically every main character other than Willow and Boorman, and maybe written Elora Danan better...I think you could've had something that at least would've been a bit of fun. Between Willow's dry sarcastic humour and Boorman's somewhat bumbling but endearing fleeting barbarian wit, without the others all dragging the mood down, there were SOME glimmers recalling the duo of Willow and Madmartigan, but balanced a bit differently with Willow the older, and Boorman the younger. I don't know, I'm not saying it would've been amazing or anything, but it made me think that in the right hands you COULD have had something at least decently entertaining, here. The few times this show got a smile out of me, it was a line from Boorman or occasionally Willow when you didn't have the misery parade constantly whining.

The Willow tv show is what happens when you take something that has a fanbase that's mainly 40+ and aim the sequel at teens/early 20s. And then shunt the OG characters to the side and have the leads be a random pair of lesbians played by bad actresses. And have it be overseen by a dude with a dubious track record and whose only connection to the original is that it was created by a colleague of his dad's. At this point I think maybe Tom Cruise should make a How To list for adapting 1980s franchises and circulate it around Hollywood.

Willow is an example of "be careful what you wish for". Although I didn't wish for it. The original movie was good fun and I have good memories of it. Did it really need a TV series? Not really. Still, when it was first announced, I was curious, but got disappointed pretty fast the more of its development I saw.

Oh my gosh, Warwick Davis is so freaking awesome!! The behind the scenes mockumentary looks way more fun and funny than the actual show, I'll have to sit down and watch it before it gets taken down. It is kind of a shame they're removing the show from Disney+, though. I couldn't stomach more than four episodes of it, but there were a few thousand people out there that genuinely liked it. It sucks, if they had just removed Kit from the show it would have been actually watchable, but in my ideal Willow series, the main cast would have been just three characters (Willow, Illora, and one other character, preferably Boorman), they would have removed all the modern day slang and most of the American accents, used the original musical score from the movie, and made the whole thing less gray and drab colored. And given Willow a jetpack to go with his flamethrower.

Willow the TV series turned the titular character into a side NPC. Instead of the story following him, it basically followed Elora and Kit. So not only was he sidelined, he was sidelined for 2 female characters. One of which underwent a literal change in appearance thru the season and not a single one of her colleagues noticed or mentioned her turning into a redhead. Even her boyfriend didn't notice when she found him. It's absurd. Did they think WE wouldn't notice too??

Didn’t it just turn out that they are set up with the writers union currently to pay residuals not based on a shows performance, but on the overall streamers performance. That means that if nobody’s watching Willow, but millions of people are tuning in for other stuff, they still have to pay the writers of Willow. That really sounds like a contract. You wanna have set up to get your stuff removed if it’s not performing. If people aren’t watching it but they’re paying you just forward to sit there they’re going to take it down.

The part I'm left wondering is how they should of made this series. It could have been really good. Aim it around 14yr old boys, focus on the Val Kilmer aspect with the sword, the witch part for the sorcery and somehow work Willow into the main plot line and he can have hiis own side kick characters. The film was dark and medieval, they had Val left in a cage as a highwayman, that's pretty dark. Losing armies, a kind of scary witch (for 14yr olds) and then the light hearted aspect of the mini-people and Willows lot. It should have been gold.

I feel real sorry for the guy who plays as Willow. He doesn't even get put in until AFTER the show starts, is reduced to the role of a sorcerer wannabe, and it's only until the very end when he actually becomes the guy he was in the FIRST Willow. All the while getting dumped on, and overshadowed by others, simply because of what they have (or didn't have) in their pants. No half-decent actor deserves that sort of treatment.

You make a great point about the acting… they actually all played the parts very well (except Willow, but no big deal). The issue was simply that the writing was absolutely horrific. I liked the actors though for the most part, but you’d think each of them was written to be as hated as possible by the audience. Kind of sad really. Unlike shehulk, which was poorly written, poorly portrayed, and topped with awful CGI, this show “only” had terrible writing. That’s a win in modern Hollywood.

I'll say one thing for this show: it's nice to see that the cast appear to have gotten along, based on their willingness to joke with each other. It's the ONLY thing I will say in its favor, because the show itself is dogsh!t. But I'm glad the actors liked each other.

They seem like nice people but in some ways that might actually be the problem. Being too nice seems to correlate negatively with the quality of the product. Maybe media production needs a villain in charge to actually keep the cast focused on producing something good.

As a fan of the movie, I actually didnt find the show immensly insulting personally. It was overall just boring and generic. But Willow himself didnt get off too bad. He was typically useful and did do magic (with ever changing rules) but that was one of two things worth paying off from the original movie. The other thing was the prophesy of Elora saving the world being fulfilled. So in essence they showed the only progressions fans of the movie could care about. They just did it in a dissastrous way. I think of it kind of like The Matrix Resurrections. If you like the idea of Neo and Trinity living happily ever after, you can have that now, even though it was wholly unnecessary. I dont much mind knowing this is what happened after the movie, but I also dont care at all to know or see more.

I had to roll my eyes when they started talking about being modern and having lgbt representation like it was some new fresh thing. Aside from the fact that Disney shoehorns that into nearly everything they put out now, this isn't even a relatively new thing in general. They had a couple of moderately attractive girls who had the hots for each other and kissed once or twice. That's not new or fresh, mainstream TV and movies have been doing that since at least the late 90's.

It has come to the point that whenever i hear they're going to do a show or a movie connected to something i grew up with, i immediately think NO... Why don't they come up with things of their own and ruin those, why don't they leave our childhood memories alone? Good writing has become a thing of the past. At this point scripts written by AI would be a step up, even given that it wouldn't bring something especially new. It still would be better then the writing modern writers deliver...
