Why is Tua So Disrespected? Tua Tagovailoa is now in the NFL MVP discussion as the Dolphins finding another gear on offense. Mike McDaniel, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle all get credit & love, but Tua still draws criticism from around the league.
#tua #dolphins #tuatagovailoa #mahomes #tyreekhill #waddle #mcdaniel #flores #miami #QB #justinherbert #joeburrow #quarterback #breakingnflnews #NFL #NFLNews #Breaking #thatsgoodsports #BrandonPerna
That’s Good Sports discussing breaking NFL news. Tua is not Joe Burrow or Justin Herbert, but that’s ok.

Simple answer before I watch: he was bad his rookie year, and people can't believe the development. He's taken huge strides every year, and people don't want to believe he's good. He doesn't even lack arm strength entirely. He's great, I just lost to him as a browns fan, and I admire his game. It obviously helps to have waddle and hill, but that doesn't mean tua should be hated. He's awesome.

As a Chargers fan I am really glad that Tua is having success this season. I'm still rooting for Justin Herbert to win but it really helps the draft class that all three of them "make it" in the NFL. I gush about any Burrow vs. Herbert rivalry and now that Tua is doing well it really makes things interesting! Thank you so much for making this video, Perna. Yes, Tua doesn’t have the arm strength to throw the ball 70 yards in the air, nor is he a freakish athlete like Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen… He’s pretty GREAT at everything else! He’s pinpoint accurate, elusive, has great pocket awareness, makes smart decisions, gets the ball out quicker than most QBs, hardly ever turns the ball over, tough as nails, and has become a master at manipulating opposing defenses. Oh yeah, he also wins almost every game he plays. Only time will tell though if he can stay healthy throughout his career.

As a neutral party (a Bengals fan), I think a lot of the people who disrespect Tua are the ones who are all up on Herbert and are just mad Tua was taken over Herbert. But I think this year has shown why he was. Tua is a top QB in the league. I won't pretend that I thought much of him talent-wise before this stellar year by him, but he has massively improved. Yes he has an improved situation, but I don't think that alone can account for such a large improvement. People don't want to believe he's good because it breaks the notions they had of him last year and when he was drafted.

I think you’re on to something. I feel like that’s where some of the Mahomes dislike comes from as well. If you look at the comments on old Mahomes draft videos, it’s clear a lot of people thought KC had made a huge mistake & he was clearly a bust. I think it stems from people just hating being proven wrong. Those kind of people don’t want to admit Tua is a lot better than they thought he’d be, so they look for reasons why they might still be right (system QB, Waddle & Hill etc). Some will continue to look for reasons even after he’s gone to consecutive Pro Bowls/Super Bowls.

As a Dolphins fan, it's something I hadn't previously considered, but I completely get it. Lamar is #3 in win percentage in history, had one of the best seasons of all time in 2019, and is still finding ways to win despite tons of injuries. The fact that Fields is suddenly balling (and rushing) out of his mind means there's a new exciting extremely talented rushing QB for people to fawn over. Also due to missing his top receiving options, Lamar's pure passing stats aren't on the same level as Mahomes/Hurts/Tua means he slid further down the MVP race so far this season. All that said though, I don't know how anyone would argue he's average/underwhelming/only a product of his system like people still are claiming about Tua.

As a fellow broncos fan I think Tua is incredible. He plays at a high level and has the leadership and drive of a top 5 QB. Brian Flores I think was the main problem with Tua and was trying to hurt his development. Remember the finger incident last year where Tua got benched for being "hurt" when he said he wasn't, then he comes back and lead the dolphins on that huge win streak. That's the main reason why Brian Flores's firing looked weird but if Tua didn't carry them to those wins then there wouldn't have been any controversy at all with his firing.

One correction - it's a myth that Tua throws short passes and succeeds because of Hill and Waddle YAC. The numbers say exactly the opposite he connects deep with minimal YAC. He actually had to learn to throw with less velocity when touch and feel were required. He may not have the "biggest" arm in football but disrespect his arm at your peril. Check the numbers.

Two names Drew Brees, Kurt Warner Both MVPs, superbowl champions and smart, touch QBs that take care of the ball. I am more than happy for Tua to be in that company as a Dolphins fan and I have no sympathy to those that just want to trash the young man, particularly with how humble and nice he is despite it.

I’m a Bears fan and I can say (hot take) if Tua was adequately protected- especially during the 2022 season- that team would’ve been a serious contender to win it all. Tua puts in work and wants to be there for his team, but the concussion concern is understandable and unfortunate since I can tell he worked hard to outshine that “dink and dunk” label placed on him. He laid out some bombs to Hill and Waddle last season and the victories the team achieved with him healthy speak to that fact.

I hate when people pick and choose when to hate on those short five or two yard dump passes that are receiver makes into a mega play because legitimately like half of Tom Brady's touchdowns are those short plays that receivers took to the house and as you said Patrick my homes when he was throwing short dump off passes to Tyreek Hill no one besmirched his good name and if you want to even go into the really deep analysis if you look at the heat map of where Patrick mahomes and tua throw tua throws deeper down the field more often.

I’m a Chiefs fan & Mahomes absolutely got the same thing for dump off passes. I remember Perna saying as much & plenty of ESPN talking heads alluding to the fact that Mahomes accomplishments were all due to Hill & Kelce. The one thing I'll give is that outside of the full-on pundits, Tua is getting plenty of respect from most, even those who still aren't convinced that he's going to be consistently great. I think a hugely overlooked reason why Tua is so controversial, before any comparisons with the others in the 2020 draft class, is that he was even drafted by the Dolphins to begin with. Please, hear me out on this one. Tua's arrival at Miami marked the most coveted QB draft prospect for the Dolphins since Dan Marino, who was obviously a special player. Just as obviously, they means the two are going to be compared to each other a lot. Marino is a bona fide gunslinger. He was a quarterback who was known for his arm strength and big time throws. Tua...is not a gunslinger. He can look at times like he's checking the ball down too much out of fear of taking too big a risk. He's a sound football player who is extremely consistent, but Dan Marino especially? He is not. In a lot of ways, he's almost a stark opposite to Marino, and before this year, he also didn't seem to really be the leader that people would want a franchise QB to be. To many, especially those who compare to the Dan Marino era, they might think he's still too mild mannered this year. Obviously, the comparisons to Justin Herbert, who is also a gunslinger and far more Marino-like, serve to throw fuel to a raging fire. However, it's my honest opinion that even without Herbert's existence, Tua would still be a polarizing player today. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Just remember his injury that almost ended his football career. Then drafted to the dolphins which wasn’t doing to well for some years..think about how much pressure he was probably going through thinking about his injury and just tryna do the best he can when he got the opportunity to behind Fitzpatrick..And dealing with a head coach that had no respect for him and didn’t kno how to use TUA to his capabilities..Now with the coach that knows how to use TUA and create plays for him and the team and bring in players to benefit the entire team..He doesn’t have the strongest arm but he’s a damn good job at throwing it to his receivers weather there wide open or in tight coverage..it just shows you don’t gotta throw the deep ball to be successful..give him the respect he deserves lesssss gooooo TUA 🤙🏽

Like I said a month or so before, I feel very bad for Tua Tagavailoa. In my opinion, people hate him because he isn't as "iconic" as Justin Herbert, who cant beat bad teams and has a losing/worse record than Tua. But hey, both Bama QBs (Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagavailoa) are doing better bc they got a much improved rosters around them and have reviewed less hate that shouldn't had been given to them last year.

"But but he can't learn his playbook". Seriously though. Tua body wise is not eye popping "bigger, stronger, faster" like the average fan looks for. Tua's elite skills are things only knowledgeable observers notice. Quick twitch movement, quick throwing release, pocket awareness, accuracy, anticipation, timing, feel for the game, eye manipulation, decision making, quick progressions. These are all the things Tua is elite at which makes it look like he's playing the game too easy

I´m not a Dolpinhs fan, but my dog is (yes, that's correct. Long story.). Here in Brazil, fortunately, there's no debate regarding Tua's talent and abilities. He's good, period. Not a gunslinger or extremely dinamic running the football, but a accurate and smart QB, and the Dolphins are really something this year. And that's something really cool about QBs. You can watch Lamar, Herbert, Allen, Mahomes, Tua and others and everyone of them are really cool to watch in different ways.

The truth is either Tua's first 2 seasons were a great QB dealing with a terrible situation who is no longer shackled by those shortcomings and finally showing the ability he's had all along, or he's just an underwhelming quarterback who is somehow now just in the best offensive situation of any QB in the league. Despite all the evidence pointing to the former, the latter hot take is lazier and allows sports media to avoid needing to admit they were wrong.

People cite that comparing him to QBs like Mahomes is blasphemy, but Mahomes has always had Hill + Kelce + better offensive lines and rushing attacks. Mahomes was the most pressured QB in Super Bowl history vs Tampa at 52%, finishing with 53% completion, 5.5 y/a, and a QB rating of 52.3. By comparison Tua's entire 2021 season was at a QB pressure rate of 60.5% and finished the year with 67.8% completion, 6.8 y/a, and a QB rating of 90.1
