I remember a story years ago now where their was someone living in this persons attic and every night would come down to eat before going back to hide in the attic. The only way they found out was because the lady living there thought to install some security cameras in the house.

@@fist-of-doom487It was a couple living together. The boyfriend accused his girlfriend of sneaking his food when he wasn't home and she denied it. He set up a camera in the kitchen to catch her in the act and wound up recording a lady climb out of a crawl space, eat his food, pee in his sink, and climb back up. Raccoons or maybe air suction. If the air vents in the attic aren’t properly placed or there’s gaps, it can cause a suction effect in the room, moving the door. And if the attic has windows, the windows can also open and shut if not properly latched. My attic in Florida would do something similar during the rainy and windy season. Legitimately thought it was ghosts until an inspector went up there and showed us the problem lol an air duct had a gap and was causing the issue, and after it was properly patched, it stopped happening.

Oh, this same thing happened to me as a teen. Me and some friends were hanging out in a beach house on vacation and the attic door in the ceiling swung open and scared the snot out of me. I thought it was haunted, but upon further investigation, we found out that the attic door would swing open when a door on the floor below opened. My dad said it was something about air pressure changing in the house and I saw that the wider I swung open the door and let it slam, the further the attic door would rise before slamming. So I waited until my friends were upstairs, swung the door open, and let it slam, then I heard screams before my friends came sprinting down the stairs claiming the house was haunted/there's an intruder, etc. Great prank and I learned something!

In an old house of mine if all the windows were shut and we opened the front or back door too quickly the loft hatch would jump up. And this was an aluminum panel with a 3 inch pad of insulation on the back of it, probably weighed a few lbs. This is probably the same thing. Closed room, no other exit but the air vents in the eaves of the roof, change in air pressure when they open the door makes the hatch jump.

As a person who has an attic hatch in the garage of the same design, its a pressure differential. Those things love to get sucked up and flop around in the slightest breeze, even with the doors closed. It took some investigating to figure it out. But its pressure

As a Realtor my first thought was either the Home Inspector or FHA Appraiser didn't properly close the scuttle after inspecting the attic. But with the repeated openings I'm convinced you have a pressure differential between your garage and attic; either weigh down the scuttle, put a latch on it, or vent your garage.

Okay so devils advocate here - my interpretations of those pictures and seeing the progression between the two, it looks like the tile is just tilting out of the hole in the ceiling, not necessarily lifted and turned askew... as if the hole or board has warped over time, possibly due to water or the house just aging, and its just tilting on it's axis. For further explanation of what I'm seeing, when looking at the second photo you were sent, the top right corner appears as if it's closer to the ground, while the bottom left corner appears to be elevated higher than the others - of course this is all from photos and the perspective of seeing it in person could completely debunk my theory, but I wanted to throw in my two cents because to me it looks like that board may eventually fall and could possibly seriously harm someone below or any property stored below, so I would feel terrible if I didn't say something - by all means prove me wrong, I am obsessed with the supernatural and the possibility of ghosts, but as there's the possibility of someone being injured I wanted to speak up just in case - absolutely love the content though gusy! I hope you all are doing well and are happy :-)

There have also been many stories of people finding out random squatters have been living in their homes for months and they never left a trace. It happens, and that's terrifying. I would honestly keep a very close eye on things (maybe even install a camera or two just in case).

Perhaps some kind of tremor could have moved the attic door? My house is near a sand and gravel pit where blast mining regularly occurs, and those explosions are big. The house is solidly about a kilometer from the blast mining and the state I live in is not frequented by natural earthquakes, but when these detonations happen, the house can be felt shuddering, I can visibly see the motion. I think activity like that could easily cause an attic door like that to move in that same way if it hit just right. Either that or it's just Crenfield.

I've heard countless stories (no idea which are real and which are not) but a lot of times squatters (Homeless people, usually) either hide in the attic or crawlspace or a home and will come out at night to get food or water. I'd suggest installing a camera in the garage or at least locking the door into the garage if you don't already. Also, check the fridge in the morning. See if there's anything missing or out of place. If anything else with that attic door occurs, and I mean ever; I'd suggest calling your local PD or Sheriff's to come take a look.

A previous house of ours legitimately had this same issue. It was in High Point, NC. We've occasionally had things turn up missing, occasional weird noises up above that we thought was just the sounds of the house setting in. We never looked up at the attic because we never stuck anything up there. However, a neighbor of ours told us as we were getting ready to move that she sometimes saw the lights in the attic turn on through the window up there. Just never said anything because she assumed we used it. So uh...yeah that freaked us the fuck out. We don't know if it was a ghost or an actual squatter living up there in secret, but both possibilities would be equally terrifying.

it's actually pressure from the expanding air from the heat popping to get out, opening it. it's heavily documented as that hole is the only way for air to get in or out in most houses

It’s possible that a pressure change can cause this. We used to have a similar attic access and when you would shut the garage door real fast the pressure would push it up and make a sound or even move it. It’s kinda like when you open the front door of the house and one of the bedroom doors close or open because of the wind. Same concept. I do believe in ghosts to some extent but I don’t think this is that. Try opening and closing doors around the house while someone stands in the garage to see which door is causing it to move. That is the most likely explanation, and if that is the cause a fix is putting the cover on a hinge or two locks like we did for ours. It will still make a sound but it won’t move any more.

Well, this is pretty easy to explain. The attic should have a vent to let out heat. If there are any open windows downstairs or when a door is opened a wind gust could rather easily pop that up.

Then why is it opening more and why didn't it open before?

My first thought is the attic has vents and the rest of the house is maybe sealed fairly well, air came in through the door and found it's way out there.

I'm at 2:04, which is just after Mark's description for audio-only-viewers. THIS HAPPENED TO ME. My bedroom has the only attic access in the house. It's just a square hole with a slightly bigger flat and square piece of wood (which looks just like the ceiling but recessed up into the ceiling just a bit, pretty much exactly like the pic Bob showed) I came home from work one night to find that panel off-kilter slightly, looking like someone had hurriedly closed it and left it off-kilter slightly. Exactly like the pic Bob showed! Freaked me RIGHT out. I was always sure our house was haunted and HERE WAS THE PROOF. But it's my bedroom, what am I gonna do?? Right? So now I just lived on high alert for a good long while..... until one day it was really windy. My window in my room faces the direction where the wind is always blowing. And, after a particularly strong gust of wind, that attic access thing went *FLUMP* I nearly had a heart attack, then started watching it like a hawk. Then another gust of wind and it happened again! Turns out, in my case, the wind blew against my window and the air pressure increase caused the door thing to pop up and open like a cork for a champagne bottle. Still scared me, but now at least I understand it lol

I (possibly) have an attic ghost I have lovingly named Carl. He's pretty quiet. Once when my brother went into the attic to check on the damage from a leak in the roof, out of the corner of my eye I saw a dark mass fall from the ceiling of the hallway to the floor. When I looked there was nothing on the ground. My brother disturbed Carl's peace :(

Those hatches can open on their own. If the attic isn't air tight it can pop.

It looks like it's just not fitted well and it's slowly shifting over time from movement, either from drafts, air pressure differential in the attic vs. garage, updrafts of warm air from the garage into the attic, or small animals in the attic messing with it. It's just a thin panel of wood, it might be inset into a frame, but that doesn't make it that hard to move. I have the same kind of cover but instead of the original plywood, we now have an actual piece of wood, half an inch thick with two boards nailed to the other side, it weighs like four or five pounds and it doesn't move around in our drafty house. Raccoons have enough dexterity to rip a tortoise out of its shell, coatimundis (similar to raccoons) can slip through a 2 inch gap in a car window and destroy the entire inside of the car to look for food at campgrounds, you think small animals can't get its fingers down between a frame and a door and tug on it? Someone breaking in isn't gonna leave the door more and more askew each time so you know they were there lmao. Anything a ghost can do is usually the same thing small animals can do: knock things over, make noises in the walls, tilt lightweight attic doors to the side. For years I had to put things against my closet door because my house would shift every night when the air conditioner turned on and it would make my closet door tilt open from the pressure changing in my room and the latch sucked.

I live in a house thts been passed down in my husband's family for generations. It was also built in the late 1800s. 4 family members DIED in various rooms of the house. Thts not even counting prior owners to his family. There was even a casket viewing for his great great grandfather literally where our couch is rn. Im convinced its haunted. My husband feels like hes being watched, wed hear knocks on the door n find no one there, hear random footsteps, close doors several times tht seem to open themselves (even checking tht they r latched) n our cats would just stare at random corners of the house.

Sometimes the wind can get into your attic via vents and cause a draft or suction that can move your attic opening.

It's also highly possible that it's air pressure, especially in season changes.
