Hi Andrew, You are correct. The top configuration would mean you have now lost the zone of low pressure loss, which is the low loss header + the low velocity common headers. The common flow and return pipe or header should be sized for around 0.5 m/s, with both pumps running. If you reduce the size of the section of header, as indicated, you will get a lower flow rate than the pump design, because of the increase in pump head. The system resistance curve of each pump will also change, everytime the second pump kicks in and out. That's not the effect you want..
