Growing up with the Simon & Garfunkel rendition, the words always held deep meaning, expressing the anguish my generation felt over civil rights, assassinations and the war. David uses his rich, powerful voice to pour out emotions in a way that floods my mind with sorrow, and chills my heart with fear for what the world around me has become.

I was a teen when this was first released by Simon and Garfunkel. I always thought that it was about the neon god sitting in the corner of every household, stopping speech and listening to others whilst glued to the box. David Draeman cries out his frustration at the fact that 60b years on no one heeded their warning, as can be seen on a daily basis everywhere you go with people having ear pieces in . stops conversation, and eyes down looking at the new neon god, the phone

Thank you, thank you, thank you for your reaction video - too many of these videos stop and start the song so many times that it is impossible to get the feeling that it emotes, but you felt like I did the first thousands times I listened to this version. I still get goosebumps listening to it, which I never did when Simon and Garfunkel sang it, he puts so much drama into it that you cannot help but get drawn into the song. I look at it as S&G were singing a warning to us and David showed anger that we hadn't listened to the warning. Once again, thank you for your reaction video xx

This is a protest song from the 60's. This song is timeless!!! When the original was made, it was a warning to the country... maybe even the world as to what's going on... now it's a rage... how can we still be silent when you see what is going on.. this song brings me to tears and gives me goosebumps everytime!! EPIC!!!

It is interesting to hear different interpretations of the lyrics. My take on it is that it's about depression and the inability function or speak about one's feelings. Paul Simon, the writer suffers from Bipolar disorder, so it kind of makes sense to me, especially with his opening lyric "hello darkness my old friend".

His voice reminds me of a folkloric character in Africa called the “town crier”, which is someone who speaks to the village when danger is coming. The town crier doesn’t scream, he doesn’t yell. The town crier just walks through the village speaking, and he has such a powerful hypnotic authoritative voice that people can’t help but to stop anything they’re doing and just listen to this commanding voice. It raises over any other voice. And it's the voice that the town would rise up to hear, as if they were being called by some powerful force that tunes their minds and souls and shuts down any other thought. That’s David Draiman. His voice is pure soul and will, powerful and with such authority. He means every word, and he makes you feel it in your guts. He touches your deepest strings as soon as he opens his mouth. You feel like you're being called. And this version is outstanding. They say you can listen to the original song as many times as you want, but you never hear the song until you hear this version, and that’s when you hear the song for the first time. And about the lyrics. To me it's about technology, TV then and now cellphones.

For me the song is a warning about technology. People talking without speaking ( texts emails..) people hearing without listening..( the whole internet) its the neon god we made.. its amazing what goes on while we sit in silence because we have been dehumanised by technology. It was true in the 70s and its more true now. Paul Simon was a visionary. The Irony is we all listen to his warnings on that technology and not dare to disturb the silence.

- The original is pure poetry and melancholy. Dramian takes you on an epic journey! -Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. -Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan. -David Draiman: "The fact that I was sick as a dog (laughs). I remember I was definitely fighting something off, but it was a cool experience. It was cool performing with an actual orchestra. It was really vibing and the mood helped, I think, enhance the delivery. Another example of how the best voices come from heavy metal. The original Simon and Garfunkel version from 50 years ago, was a subtle warning about staying silent in the face of injustice. The Disturbed version shows the rage because we didn't listen and haven't learned a thing. Trump is a symptom of our ignorance.
