So overall I like your reaction to this iteration of the song. But I have to push back on the “growl” being a negative aspect in any way at all. If you take off your analysis robe for a moment, go back and listen to the song as a performance of a musical delivering a message and combine the lyrical poetry with the emotional delivery of the song, at the end, you will get that same sort of inner feel similar to when one watches the face of Pavarotti doing Nessun dorma from Turandot in Los Angeles back in 1991 which was one of the greatest vocal performances ever recorded. Pavarotti knew what he had just done and you could see it on his face when he exited that closing pinnacle note. Go back and listen to this again but leave aside what you would like and listen to he entire thing as a collective emotionally dynamic story told with an uncommon urgency. What you may realize is this as well is one of the greatest live performances ever. I truly believe that. Every element of a perfect performance is there but takes it to an entirely different level.

The “growling” brought raw emotion into the song. I found it to build on intensity and the “growl” was the climax to the build up. You didn’t just hear the words; you felt the song.

I heard it live back in the stone age when this song was just a warning, this performance gradually turns it up to a four alarm disaster alert. It brings tears to my eyes that we have learned so little in these long years.

Not all vocalists in metal bands are growling though... I mean, Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) certainly isn't growling, Eric Adams (Manowar) doesn't growl nor does Dee Snider. Growling is a singing style used predominately in the Black- and/or Death Metal genres. What David does here certainly isn't growling, not by a country mile. He Is using vocal frying though... and he's utilizing it to perfection, at Exactly the right moments to really drive the message home.

Paul Simon himself put the Video of his Website and said this about: "In case you missed it, Disturbed did a wonderful rendition of "The Sound of Silence" on Conan this week. The S&G cover also appears on Disturbed's latest album, Immortalized." Davids Voice is one of most controled and gifted Voices in our times. The Rasp is very controlled and there are only a view Singers world wide who can do this like this without shredding their Vocal Cords. The S&G Originial is to soft, it wispers the warning for the comming generation. Disturbed make a angry statement, because nobody listen to the lyrics befor seriosly. And so, this Version is on point. Imho is better than the original and one of the- maybe the - best cover ever.

I like the direction he went with the growl in the latter part of the song, to me it shows more aggression and frustration of people not listening, the anger as if saying "just shut up and listen to me".

I love how the vocal fry (growl) is used. It is difficult technique that few have mastered to this extent. It was fun to hear it used in a slow song like this. The first time I listened to this song it put me in awe. I replayed the song over for days. Even now years later I search KZbin for videos of people watching it for the first time as a hobby.

You really need to understand why he did it this way. This is a darker version because Simon meant it as a warning and David sings it like this to show that we did not heed the warning. We are using social media to talk with people instead of really talking and listening to them. We don’t communicate like we should. Go watch the video, that helps understand. I don’t consider him growling or screaming like most Metal” groups. Also David was trained in classical music and also, I believe it’s called a Cantor”? And, he had 102 temperature when he sang that.

I really dig this version, so -- in spare moments -- I've been searching out reaction videos to it, from regular music fans; vocal coaches; opera singers; and now symphony musicians. Your channel is interesting, in that there's a very different perspective to your critiques. Like, everyone else focuses on "the voice," which is, frankly, understandable, since (a) that's what you'd expect, from a vocal coach or an opera singer; and (b) yeah, of course, the guy's voice is phenomenal. But everyone on your channel focuses on the arrangement, and how the instruments are brought into the performance, and how it might have been enhanced with this-or-that choice. It's fascinating. I subscribed. I hope you guys will continue to do rock and pop songs, even if you limit yourselves to rock and pop songs with orchestral accompaniment. I don't know who "Nightwing" is, and I hope I'm not confessing embarrassing ignorance by saying that, but every other vocal coach and opera singer's channels are filled with Nightwing reactions. I'm sure they're great. But I'm also sure there's an audience for hearing what folks in your profession think of, say, REM, or Solange, or Blood Orange, or Radiohead. So, anyway, really like your channel, and your reactions to this song.

You'll probably not even see this comment after almost a year, but you are totally wrong about the growl. Don't look at it with a "symphony" point of view. The growl was perfect and so much more than the original. It's a sign of the times. S&G were perfect when they made it, but times have changed. David is a classically trained singer, but his group is heavy metal. Open your mind a bit, don't be so closed to something different from classical symphony.

Love Peter Gabriel, but he never could sing like this. Draiman covers roughly two-and-a-half octaves from bottom to top. His vocals are so distinctive. If you are speaking, you cannot really listen. Disturbed had been nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Rock Performance for their rendition of "The Sound of Silence" while appearing on Conan.

I was surprised and I liked the Peter Gabriel comparison offered, had not thought in that direction myself. Peter Gabriel has in the past 25 years worked a lot with alternative instrument arrangements (in Disturbed case, alternative to the original) with keyboards as a base foundation and Gabriel has in recent years toured with an orchestra. I don't think David Draimen's voice sounds like Peter Gabriel's but there was certainly a similarity in arrangement and musical approaches. The song progresses, builds up in intensity at a nice gradual rate until the lyric of pray in which David changes abruptly into a very dramatic vocal Fry. To me, it is intentional to create a shock, a very dramatic dynamic effect, right at a time when the lyrics go to a very serious, very dramatic religious observation and is as such, in my opinion, brilliant. I don't know if I would label Simon & Garfunkel's sound as 'undescriptive', I know what you're trying to say in context but overall, I would describe the "brand" sound of Simon & Garfunkel as extremely recognizable/ descriptive. I enjoyed the reaction, Mr. Tubist!

That smooth transition from the angry rasp back to clear belting on the final long held "sound" lyric that ends with the echo gives me shivers every time. I never made a connection with Peter Gabriel, but after thinking on it, Gabriel has a rasp too. It's just not a metal type of growl or rasp. Gabriel has an odd artsy not quite normal, not quite human rasp just on a few syllables here and there to good effect.

The interpretation believe was to emote the righteous indignation of society’s direction, the vocal fry gives vehement emotion of the lyrics. As noted in another comment, David Draiman was sick with the flu or just getting over when this was recorded. His pace, tone, and intonation are precise & controlled. Either version is remarkable, this one gives a new passion & new audience appreciation. If you are looking to rock or metal artists to possibly react to, Alter Bridge “ Blackbird” is definitely noteworthy for story telling lyrics & great musicians.

Have already subscribed. 🙂 Well, since the original version was a sad, melancolic warning about technology eventually stopping people from direct contact and interreaction, the Disturbed's rendition is a battle cry, since the message is now more true than ever. The lead singer, David Draiman, has this amazing, powerful, versatile voice which becomes an instrument of his own in the show. And the rendition is made in respect for the original. Liked your reaction, thumbs up! 👍

This is so far removed from their typical music that anyone (EVERYONE?) is blown away!! Not until this was released (12/2015) did anyone feel these lyrics so intensely!! We all have our own taste and preferences, I LOVE Simon and Garfunkel and refused to listen to this performance for so long because in my mind no one could do it like them......David proved me wrong, he has one of the healthiest voices out there...classically trained and takes care to use his grit properly. I think the "deliver" part depends of the listener. Our experiences and perceptions will always diverse, which is awesome. I know that for a lot of people growls and screams are out of the world. For me for instance, music whithout any growl sounds empty. hehehehe For me anything with growls gets better. But I understand everybody who doesn`t feel that way. For everything there is a learning curve or a "getting used to it" curve. It doesnt mean we all will like it, but to like, we first need to get used and understand the appeal. I like the idea of what you guys are doing. But I would be very intrested to hear about the technicalities, arrangement, composition and so on...Like, I dont need to like something to see how brilliant musically it is you know? This break down from a classic trained musician interests me. =] Cheers guys Turn that original song into this peace is fantastic.

I was hoping for a hornist but a tubist will do nicely as well.

He's basically classically trained, I think he trained to be a canter in the beginning. He's had some awesome experience. And he was sick the flu when he did this show.

Paul Simon has said publicly that he likes this version. I love Paul but the original lyrics never seemed to go with the instrumentation or even with the style of singing.

Did you not hear the lyrics when he "growled" as you put it. They were praying to a neon God they created. That was anger and disdain. Listen again and pay attention to the words. David is classically trained and is a Jewish Cantor. Now do you get it.

This guy's a clown. He doesn't get anything because his head is too far up his own ass.

This guy should stick to playing instruments rather than commenting. Growling? That's the first time ANYONE that I have viewed has reacted to this version as "growling" BOO!
