@@PeterGriffin11 I agree, mostly. That's not really what I'm saying. They haven't really "mentally damaged" me but it's really warped how I view things. It's not just his content but kids content as a general. I feel like I could have had a more positive childhood if I wasn't exposed to such things at such a young age. I really hope you understand where I'm coming from. It's not about mentally straining the children, but more about monitoring what children are exposed to especially if it it's difficult for the children to consciously process. It's more about what it teaches children, not how it effects the kids brain to develop. Atleast this is from personal experience, I should have probably done more research into this before saying anything I will admit. I hope this clears some things up.

Children are never too young to discuss marketing tactics with them. For instance, rather than discussing why the headphones weren't great, it would be a great moment to discuss HOW the headphones were marketed, what words were used to trigger emotions in the viewer, and how those apply to all other types of products.

All I learned in Elementary school was how to look things up using the least words possible, and don't put your personal info online. Then, in 8th grade, we learned about 'creeps' (they didn't use the proper terms. Just creeps), but not how to properly identify them. They only talked about the surface level stuff. We really need better education about this stuff in school.

I was in 6th grade when they taught us about how advertisers use different tactics to mislead, but all of the ads were from the superbowl, or 10 years old at least. They didn't teach us about things we actually see on the daily. The ads we are bombarded with when we are looking at articles they want us to read were simply ignored. It was all outdated crap that we already knew was misleading. The fact that they use cardboard to make burgers look thicker, or motor oil as syrup. It was like they found a Buzzfeed article and made it into a class.
@slightlyoffensivedadjokes Жыл бұрын
I remember when I was in elementary school back in the early 10's, we had a "computers" class where we just did stuff on computers. one day my teacher gave us this assignment, a list of websites for us to check out, and to decide by ourselves whether it's reliable or not. I remember that one of the sites we had to check out was the original site for the tin foil hat conspiracy, and I actually wrote down that it was true. I felt kind of embarrassed when she went through the answers to the class at the end, but it taught me a really important lesson. I'm really thankful that that assignment was something I had to do at a young age, and just how easy it is to be tricked by sites with disinformation. I think it was a really effective way of demonstrating that it's best to be skeptical about EVERY piece of information you see. and looking back at it now, I doubt any of us kids got a perfect answer, at least not the majority of us did. it was just a realization that I really value.

A friend of ours had to go to a funeral so we (myself and my gf) volunteered to babysit her son. He's about 6. So I thought it would be fun (and would keep him quiet) if I let him play Crash Bandicoot. He was enjoying it but what amazed me was how he was talking while playing it. He's a very shy, quiet, polite kid, but while playing he was doing the stereotypical Let's Play gamer talk like "WOAH, no way, I totes got it" and "Aw man, I can't believe that". He wasn't talking to me. To him, this was how you play games, since it's what you see. Kids are incredibly smart and I hate when people belittle them, but I think when you're exposed to something and see nothing but that type of content (even as an adult), it's easy to think "oh, this is how I do that thing, exactly like that". I don't think there's anything wrong with just random trash, but because of the algorithm, not only can you be fed nothing but that KZbinr, but what little range you're exposed to is bound to in the same style. So it's if it's not this Brent guy, it's someone he either leads to or from.

Why are so many kids into political stuff like that anyway? Why are so many young people either into social activism or the edgy anti-SJW culture? Just be kids! Play some Nintendo games and watch Cyberchase or something. I can't believe that I have to say this, but... There's nothing wrong with just living and enjoying life. You don't have to be glued to the news to be a good person, no matter what journalists and influencers say.

When I was younger I saw these kinds of videos, and even I knew it was weird and gross. Thankfully I understood it was weird so I just went outside and played with dolls and ate dirt like any growing child should.

I remember last year I visited some relatives in another state and while talking to my little cousins (5-10 years old) I was shocked by just how much adult topics reached them through the internet. Thankfully my aunts and uncles try to supervise them but they still knew shit like bo burnham's bezos song, watched the first episode of squid games, and had some awareness of sexual topics that I didn't reach til i was in middle school. I remember being wary of some child-aimed content when a cousin of mine went through a jake paul phase a few years back but brent rivera is another level. I remember watching some of his comedic skits around 7 years ago or so. I'm disgusted and disappointed at what he's come to, and I'm really scared for all these kids growing up on the internet

I WAS WATCHING THIS WHEN MY 9 YEAR OLD SISTER CAME HOME AND THE FIRST THING SHE PUT ON WAS BRENT RIVERA 😭

I think the biggest reason he does this kinda content, is because kids like to doing wrong stuff. They like the feeling of doing something only grownups can do. And they know “kissing” is not for their age, so they watch it without fully understanding it.

Reminds me of the channel that Ann Reardon talked about that tells (fake) true crime stories for children over really colorful footage of cake decorating. She made a good point that if a kid is using headphones, you'd have no clue the "baking video" was actually concerning stories with plots like "school girl agrees to meet up with pushy older online fan and he's super nice and solves all her problems," or "child abuse; that's it that's the whole story."

THANK YOU . This has been on my mind for a long time and someone needed to say it. also did anyone else notice that in the screenshot of the “am I stronger than a 10 y old” vid the caption directly below says “if this video gets 500k likes I’ll ask Pierson to be my New Years KISS” and yeah he capitalized it not me 💀

I used to be a fan of him when I was like 10-11 , now I still watch his sister and some of his friends who are funnier ,I kind of got addicted to them since I was so used to him since I was a child . Though I now take these videos with a grain of salt ofc and only watch them if I’m like really bored

This is totally intentional to lure curious young teens and kids, and he knows that they are going to watch and get more views of it so he doesn’t care if those are children

I personally think that a big part of this is the fact that these kids probably know those sections are inappropriate. So watching them becomes this exclusive thing that promotes that "boys' club" mentality of joking with one of the guys. They think it makes them look cool that they're exposed to this stuff and fit in their mind can joke like a cool older guy. It adds this sense of obligation so that as he promotes any brand/channel thing, his subscribers are urged to participate/buy in and these kids have no idea how it affects their view on women, sexuality, what's appropriate in a normal setting It could easily be 100x more dangerous when you think of how that very format is what shane dawson did to put kids in horribly inappropriate situations and the worst od the worst, how onion buy literally groomed children with this format. They film kids content and throw in all these sexual references, normalizing that behavior, so it doesn't stand out as odd to a kid if they ever meet them irl. And to be fair, im not accusing brett rivera of doing that bc his videos meeting kids just look like regular kid stuff but the potential is very much there.

Late but I can definitely attest to the fact that watching bad content is definitely a status symbol at schools / among children. I remember at my school people were bragging about having seen people being shot online, and seeing something gory or inappropriate was celebrated like a badge of honour so much that I can totally see an impressionable kid diving down dark rabbitholes to get in on the popularity or even just be included.

A huge part of the retention from his channel probably come from the weird will they wont they with his "crush/girlfriend/pastcrush/friend" as he says, and it only interest kid, the fact he makes stuff so sexual knowing his audience is just disgusting
