Fun fact: All USMC members are considered riflemen and combatants, that's why the USMC doesn't have medics, and uses Navy Corpsman for the job. @@Arick_jr I think it's clear that they mean international war laws which nation agreed to follow. And not all of them have the same severity, the same as national laws. I.e. both burglary and murder are illegal but one is much more serious. And for lesser war crimes, take forcing officer POWs to do manual labour. That is a lesser war crime and really unfair as it isn't a war crime to force enlisted to do manual labour. There is also false surrender. That is a war crime but most people would do it and find it natural. Officially, once you surrender you aren't suppose to resume fighting or try to escape, as that is technically penalising the enemy for following the law by accepting your surrender and can lead to a lot of their forces refusing to accept surrender in the future.

Correction in regards to early war planes. Because of their design, they acted like nothing more than powered gliders. Parachutes would have been unnecessary in most cases as even if the engine got shot to pieces, the plane would simply glade back down to safety.

The reason for not wearing a parachute in ww1 was that the high (especially the british) feared that pilots would lose there edge if they had a way of surviving... the germans on the other hand introduced parachutes in 1918 and quite a few (ernst udet being the most famous) pilots where saved because of them. When it comes to survival in case of geting shoot down.... well the first plane shoot down in combat ended in bouth crewmembers dieing... and that was the typical outcome over all... one had to be exceptionally lucky to survive as in most cases the crew was eighter disabled by gunfire or the plane chaught fire....

Some enemy combatants in the Afghanistan War would use the Rules of Engagement against American soldiers. While clearing rooms, a squad of American soldiers would meet an insurgent that would hose down a narrow hallway with a single magazine and then throw down their weapon and surrender. This was meant to provoke American soldiers to attack an unarmed target, which would only in hindsight be considered a war crime but for the soldiers immediately involved might seem like valid retaliation against an enemy combatant.

The notion of “war crimes” has always puzzled me, the idea that rules dreamed up by empty suits who’ve never set foot on a battlefield are going to be payed any mind by the most violent and savage of men is actually laughable.
