You know that feeling you get when you're in the mountains or a remote patch of woods and you look up on a clear night and the sky is practically white with shining stars? The awe, the wonder, the magnitude...only a guitar player could feel like that when watching Tommy Emmanuel. I don't care what music you like, his playing is like a cure for sadness. God protect that man and those hands.

I learnt the first 16 bars or so of his Lady Madonna version. I’ve been playing at a good level for 30 years … still Took me hours of learning like a beginner just to be able to play the bass line with the high strings in syncopation. It cannot be overstated to people how hard this stuff is to do. To see him make it all it sing out like this so flawlessly is one of lifes limitless pleasures

Funny you mention that. I've been playing for 20 years at a pretty advanced level and just started trying to learn Tommy's Blue Moon, with its thumb basslines and all. Actually feel like I did when I first started playing. Messing up rythm and timing. I guess that's how we keep learning!

This is the most incredible sound i have ever heard come out of an Acoustic Guitar. Only a master to the masters could accomplish such sound. Pure perfection and i know it when i hear it. Been a musician myself for 50 years some just have talent blessed from above. Tommy Emanuel is one of those.

@@flightofthefatman I'd say definitely a combination. While it's true hard work will make you good obviously talent is still a factor. Tommy has an unbelievable ear and sense of rhythm - while these traits can be improved and even developed, he must have natural ability to be able to bring them to this level. Also, as far as I know all his siblings are / were musicians as well

This man has an amazing gift. I was wishing that I had been born with a gift as well.A voice in my head said "You've been born with the gift of being able to appreciate the gifts of others." There is no better or worse. Bob Dylan? Bert Jansch? Mark Knopfler ? Joni Mitchell? Tom Waits? John Renbourn? Ry Cooder? Robert Johnson? Neil Young? Wizz Jones? Eric Clapton? Willie McTell ? The list is endless. Comparisons are ridiculous.If it works for you (including your own playing - however rudimentary) then that's enough. We are so lucky to be sharing our time with all these wonderful people.

Seen him live a few times down under. Just brilliant, and a really lovely and charming guy. When he's touring the country he always makes a point of having free Q and A classes at the local schools that anyone can attend.

Imagine that we all could play guitar just like Tommy , then he wouldn’t be special , would he ? But we can’t , and he IS . And that’s the point . With God’s Grace and guidance ( inspiration ) Tommy has persevered and persevered , for years and years , and struggled , and worked undaunted towards the goal of perfection . And he’s achieved it . Don’t feel depressed, guitar aspirants ; feel inspired , enjoy Tommy’s greatness ( for it’s extremely rare ) , and then sit down . . . and get to work .
