I really like it when you cover queer artists like David Hockney, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, etc. It feels like connecting with knowledge of my community that's been hidden from me all these years, and helps put into perspective some of the history too.

Thanks so much for the comment! I’m really making an effort to cover queer artists, women, people of color and even some of those old white men who could hold a paint brush. It’s a work in progress but I definitely appreciate the comment.

Hockney often wears a hat. (But you knew that. 😉) I was in a friend's home one time, he was walking me room to room telling me what he'd paid for each painting and how much more they were worth now. My ADHD blurted out, "You know when I photograph paintings, if anything really terrible happened, the most I could ever pay is $2000. So for me every work of art is precious and worth $2000." He paused then, knowing me and knowing what he wanted, walked me into the next room, "I paid fifteen thousand just last year, I could get forty-five now." Touché. So it's usually enough to say, super expensive, and then show more images and talk about the art. (If Hockney's paintings were suddenly free would they be any less wonderful?) One aspect of Hockney's work that's truly exceptional, is his ability to bend and shape space in his landscape paintings. I've studied this subject and can stand in front of even a very simple Hockey painting and feel the bulge and turns of rolling hills. He seems very loose but he can use just the right curve on the canvas to make us feel the movement. I've always loved Hockney's work. As a student in damp chilly Michigan they fit right in with Joni Mitchell, sun, sand, mountains, and my dreams of California. I once worked for Hockney. Richard, his usual photographer had never been on any of the trips, so this time he got to go to Japan with David, and I got to do the photography for "Some New Pictures." I don't remember what any of those paintings were selling for at the time, I was just happy to be a part of David's world and art for a few weeks, and I was very careful. (And made sure to remember everything. Like what looked like a Michelangelo drawing right next to the toilet in the studio. It was behind glass, but hung almost to the floor. There's another Hockney take on 'splash.' )
