If you haven't you need to visit the South East in the US, beaches in the Mediterranean, almost anywhere in the gulf of Mexico, etc. Anywhere with mostly mild surf and relatively warm water. The South East in the US the water can be even warmer than the Med IME I guess because of the gulf stream. It can change your outlook on the Ocean if you're from places with really big surf, crazy riptides, and colder water which is a lot of the world. If you're still scared maybe just sun bathing is for you lol. But yeah I've met people who grew up in the Pacific NW who hated the Ocean because their surf is much more violent and water very cold like 60 degrees Max who visited beaches in SC and absolutely loved it.

Hiya Woody & Gus! Non-diver here, found you after going rabbit hole about high altitude climbing funnily enough. I used to swim competitively but in college I developed severe anxiety and a fear of water (I’m talking full body panic when I tried snorkeling & feeling like I was going to be grabbed & dragged to the bottom while trying to swim laps in a clear pool!) Needless to say I probably won’t be diving in this lifetime, so I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the intelligent, hilarious, educational content y’all create! Watching your videos I’ve learned SO much and have major respect for the science of diving and the skill that is involved. I will probably never dive so I appreciate the opportunity to experience these dives as analyzed by experts instead of just watching with my usual inner monologue of “oh look, it’s my personal hell!” I’m actually a true crime nut and I wanted to ask if you would consider covering the 2013 LAPD’s dive into the La Brea Tar Pits? Sgt. Dave Mascarenas used a dry suit (I think?) to attempt to recover evidence from a 2011 cold case which had been tossed into the tar. Not much on KZbin about it but there are some articles and a couple of in-depth podcast episodes which actually interview Dave! There's a cave here in the Texas hill country that's mostly dry but has a few lakes deep in the cave. The water is cold though from what I've been told and access is severely limited but the group I'm with has access to the the full length of the cave which is ten miles. We're planning to dive that lake and see what's in it though I'll likely be the safety guy on the edge since I don't have the gear for it yet. It's not a deep cave just long. I just want to see what's living in the water since the rest of the cave has life which is why it's not open to the public except the first few hundred yards. It'll also be part of our search and rescue training which involves a lot of cave work since there's areas here where you step off a trail in a state park and fall into a cave. Not quite cave diving [yet] but it's a step in that direction training wise.
@JamesSmullins2 жыл бұрын
@S M it's about a hour from Austin, I can't name the cave since it's not generally public knowledge beyond what's open to the public that get guided tours. There's thousands of caves west of Austin most small and unexplored at least in the last hundred years. A lot of the old west stage coach robbers and Indians hid in these caves so there's always potential to find gold and artifacts within them. There's two big stashes of gold somewhere around here from robberies that was never recovered even after the capture of the robbers. Needless to say every time I stumble upon a cave or hole big enough to fit something in a look. It helps knowing where one of the major stage coach trails is and access to a big part of it, one area looks promising but it's a ravine loaded with rattlesnakes making it a risky exploration. But that makes it a great spot to hide the gold since people are afraid to go there including the rancher that's had that land in the family for over a hundred years. They've never set foot in that ravine since they bought it. If you're into dry caves Colorado bend state park has a lot but they require you to be with cave groups they know to explore and there's hundreds of miles of caves unexplored due to bad air and other physical factors. That park is also in the Texas hill country about two hours from Austin.
@XiraKira132 жыл бұрын
@@JamesSmullins can you explain the bad air? Is it because deep caves release gases?
@JamesSmullins2 жыл бұрын
@@XiraKira13 its the level of oxygen in the cave, it gets low and can cause many issues similar to the martini effect when diving. You carry a Bic lighter with you and when the flame gets really high its time to back up. About the only thing in this area that can poison air is Sulphur but you're going to smell that long before it's a issue. Most well water hear has it including mine and there's a Sulphur spring that they ran a pipe from into a swimming pool. Stinks but otherwise harmless though it's a constant 72 degrees which feels cold in the summer when you first jump in. The spring itself is blocked so people can't crawl in.
@brolohalflemming70422 жыл бұрын
@@JamesSmullins That's.. a risky way to test air. Especially if there might be methane from coal seeps, or biogenic. If there's sulfur around, HS is a huge risk. Although it reeks, it also rapidly shuts down a sense of smell, and then your lungs. So "Do you smell that?" then "Nope", and then unconsciousness and death. So general safety for any dry, wet or semi-dry cave is take a proper, certified air quality test and alarm. Especially if you'll end up doing cave rescue, like cavers who ran into a pocket of HS. Also a general O2 gauge because depending on conditions, oxidation of minerals can lower oxygen content. Often air quality issues happen in cave systems like this were there's wet-dry-wet sections if there's limited air circulation between the rest of the system.
@JamesSmullins2 жыл бұрын
@@brolohalflemming7042 while there is a chance of Sulphur its low, as I said it's the only potential contaminate in this area. The crew I'm training with knows the one cave they've come across it quite well and use that area as a training ground so others learn the signs of bad air by watching those up fronts actions. That cave isn't bad due to Sulphur. This is all part of search and rescue training. Most caves that go any distance have two entries so air flow is good but a couple don't or at least not discovered yet. If they had to search that cave they would take o2 tanks to go deeper but for training that edge is as far as they go. And most caves are dry here, higher ground and very few springs exist around here so it's rain seeping in or entering holes that puts water in the few that have it. Caves in west Texas would be different as there's more risk of other gases entering since that's oil country but you don't hear about many caves out that way since it's so flat.
