i think that the 1998 version would be alright since she is clearly not a mary sue character, and its set in china, based (loosely, as with any disney story) off a chinese poem, so chinese characters make sense... but mulan 2020, that was sjw feminist mary sue cinema shit that is so far detached from the poem that it can hardly be called mulan anymore and had such shitty charcterisation i could barely care about any of the characters, not to mention trashy cgi, severly incorrect interpretations of chinese mythology (at least the 1998 version got some accuracy), bad actors... if i wanted a serious adaptation of mulan with actual actors, i would go for the version that china produced...

I never got how people say they can't relate to a character because they weren't their race or something. That's like super incorrect. For example, I'm a white german. Another thing that bothers me is that the SJWs are so superficial and prejudiced themselves that they think the only kind of diversity is race, gender, sexual orientation, etc. But there is also diversity of personality, background, socioeconomic class, education, political affiliation, hobbies religion, etc. They would rather have shallow characters with diverse racial and sexual orientations than rich well developed characters who superficially look the same. This is two years ago but about Dumbledore being gay.... before J.K. R. talked about his sexuality, I remember reading the books and thinking he was in love with Grindelwald. Even in the community was especulation about his backstory and motivations, I think Rowling just decided to go with the fandom opinion and said: yes, He gay. Like, I prefered it when it was implicit there was some type of love/admiration from Dumbledore to Grindelwald, and after all the fall out with his little sister and their relationship. It's not that they butchered Live Action Mulan's story, it's supposedly closer to the original chinese legend/story. What they did butcher was Shang, because Ping/Shang could be seen as Disney approving of gay people when in reality Ping is just Mulan crossdressing to fit in with the army. Now Shang is two different characters, a love interest for Mulan and another character, instead of being one single character. Because in China, LGBT is problematic and illegal. Whenever Disney puts a remotely LGBT character in a film, it has to be such a minor appearance that it can be edited out for China. Same reason why Finn was made smaller on the posters for the Chinese release of the Sequel Trilogy. Because they're not fond of black people either.

Jeanette Hansen the reason why there’s no Shang is because Disney was afraid the power dynamic between him and Mulan would be problematic (a higher up male and a common female), so instead they created a male character who was equal to her rather than her superior. If it was due to speculations around Shang being gay, then the live action wouldn’t have given any love interest to Mulan because then any male character could be viewed to be gay/bi.

Rewatching this now, I think She-ra is the best representation I've seen in media, honestly, ESPECIALLY kids/teen media. Actually, the point is to act as an antagonist and obstacle for the hero to over come. What you described is more of a modern movement of villains being humanized, used to reflect the fragility of human nature and the harshness of life. However, some of the most memorable villains (such as classic Disney villains) were themselves pure evil. Yes, having villains that represent some abstract concept of human nature is great and all. However, it will never be as memorable as the classic purely evil villain.
