Not necessarily. I believe it's both in a sense. As someone else mentioned, statistically and realistically, you really don't see many woman comedians and what not. We see that. And there's a reason. Men just happen to be more prone to the ‘funny.’ And that's the truth, plain and simple. We don't know why exactly, but it's something rooted in biology and relationships apparently. However, none of this voids the fact and possibility for woman to be either. I'm aware of that. I'm also just speaking from personal experience and as a woman myself. If that helps.

there are but significantly less than men. Also, most women do not understand the concept of humor/comedy, take fiminism for example, fiminists think that jokes are happy things and that’s why laughter is a good thing but misses that the point of comedy is to turn something dark into a joke like rape or schoolshootings etc. see TheAmazingAthiest’s video

I discovered Shoe's content recently, and I find her very refreshing, and generally agree with her for the most part, until this video. Specifically, "If someone is trying to make you laugh, laugh." No. Though it is fortunately a small segment of the populace, I have dealt with men who were told once they were funny and think everyone should laugh hysterically at everything they say. Or else. Insulting their wife/girlfriend for sport isn't funny. Neither is joking about running me over. Telling me you're going to rip off my shirt to verify that I must be wearing a red bra. Trying to snatch money out of my hand. Just a few examples where certain men thought they were hysterical, and got distinctly pissed when I didn't fall on the floor laughing at their comedic "genius". And as far as women being funny, there have been some guys who have laughed heartily at a salty crack I've told, only for them to get abruptly stone-faced and tell me my sense of humor was inappropriate for a woman/unlady-like. It was bizarre, so I stopped telling jokes around them whenever I was in their vicinity. They complained about me not joking with them anymore. You can't make this shit up, it's too stupid.

The thing isn't so much that women aren't funny, but female comedy isn't funny. Or at least a great deal less so. The difference between male and female comedy I noticed is that men often tend to go with themselves as the butt of the joke one way or another. Even in stories about their mother in law or their girlfriends, as Claudia interprets. more often than not, the guy will make an ass of himself in those stories and that will be the punchline. Female comedy on the other hand is more third person oriented. It's based on "let me tell you what I witnessed" types of stories, which often times are also "you'd have to have been there" kind of stories. They simply don't work too well because of the several layers of insulation between the punchline and the audience. For male comedy, we have the audience vehicle right there, we can laugh at or laugh with the comedian, because he is taking us into the joke through his participation. But of course there's a risk involved there. You intentionally turn yourself into the butt of the joke, that's not an easy thing to do, it's taking a risk. A risk you don't necessarily have to take. However, there are female comedians out there doing male comedy, and they are great. Sarah Millican for example, a British comedian. She's just great, but she's also not afraid to laugh about herself.

My humor stems from my empathy and pain or issues I bottle up. So humor was a coping mechanism and a way to make sad people or stop any awkward situations from occurring or continuing. I am also pretty introverted so I hate small talk and will catch people off guard by asking them really deep personal questions when I meet them, like what traumatic events happened to them to shape who they are today, and almost every person will laugh then realize i am serious, sometimes Ill share one of my stories. And they in turn will open up to me about it. And I will make little jokes to keep it light if it’s appropriate. I use to agree with hitchens but most of my shared laughter has been with my fellow male friends.
@EvilExcalibur
@EvilExcalibur 8 жыл бұрын
I personally think that the reason why women seem to be less funny (generally speaking) is because they tend to be more risk averse than men from a social standpoint. They're more likely to consider the ramifications of potentially offending someone, whereas males often just either don't care or don't think someone might be offended. That type of hesitation can be lethal in comedy, as it's almost wholly reliant on some form of suffering. then again, I'm a guy; certainly not the most qualified person to be talking about what's in women's heads. It's all speculation really
@missfunkadilly
@missfunkadilly 8 жыл бұрын
As a woman, I agree with this statement. Concerning the social standpoint, in my experience, the men in my life tend to think less (or care less) about the effect their statements have on the people around them. I'm not saying all men are socially unskilled, but in my experience women, in general, tend to have more social graces, which as you said could lead to taking less risks, especially with comedy.

*Here's my theory:* One of the evolutionary explanations for why we laugh is that our ape-like ancestors would vocalize to warn each other of threats, and would vocalize again when the threat was gone to signal that it was safe. The "false alarm" vocalization evolved into what we now call laughter. Think about the things that make you laugh. Most jokes employ an element of surprise or shock. When you hear the start of a joke, your brain begins establishing expectations, but then the punchline comes and your expectation is violated, thus momentarily triggering a threat response in your brain which is then quickly overridden by the "false alarm" response which manifests as laughter. This is the reason why we laugh at dark comedy, racial humor, pranks, slapstick, the stupidity and social _faux pas_ of other people, and so on. When somebody says or does something which we know is socially unacceptable, our brains perceive that as abnormal and therefore potentially threatening, then realize it's a false threat and react with laughter. Now, with all that said, it should be pointed out that much of what we find funny has its basis in misery, morbidity, cruelty, and so on. The Amazing Atheist pointed out in his video _Tumblr Feminists_ that we, as humans, joke about these things because laughing about them allows us to momentarily transcend the desperation of our situation and to view the absurdity of our circumstances. What we're basically doing is we're taking things that are threatening and turning them into things which aren't, thus allowing ourselves to laugh at them, and thereby enable ourselves to rise above them. Now onto why men are funnier than women. If a sense of humor is, at it's core, a way of coping with the upsetting realities of life, then it's not at all surprising that men are generally funnier than women because men are socially conditioned to not express their emotions. It's socially acceptable for a woman to cry, but a man is seen as weak if he does the same. When a woman is experiencing stress, she usually has a social license to complain openly and honestly about it. But in most circumstances, a man doesn't, so instead, he expresses himself through the filter of humor. Over the course of a lifetime of being told "boys don't cry" and to "man up", a man cultivates a sense of humor as a means of expressing himself without showing weakness. Think about some of the most famous male comedians. Charlie Chaplin came from a childhood of poverty and was forced to work in factories when he was only seven years old. Robin Williams suffered from suicidal depression. George Carlin was raised by a single mother with whom he had a troubled relationship. Richard Pryor's mother was a prostitute and his father was a violent pimp. Bill Cosby was raised by his mother who cleaned houses for a living, his father was an alcoholic who was barely ever around, and he basically had to raise his little brothers by himself, one of which died when he was eight. Female comedians also often have bad childhoods. Ellen DeGeneres' parents divorced when she was young, and she learned to be funny to cheer up her mother. Amy Schumer was born into a wealthy family, but they went bankrupt when she was nine after her father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, forcing them to move to a poorer neighborhood where she became a victim of antisemitism. Sarah Silverman had depression as a child and was put on Xanax when she was only 14. While these sorts of tumultuous origins aren't common to all comedians, I think it's apparent that a strong sense of humor comes from having to cope with hardship, and while it's true that both men and women can experience hardship, I think the fact that men are expected to hide their emotions leads more men to developing a stronger sense of humor than women generally do.

As far as the "its rude not to laugh", I feel like I prefer it that people only laugh at good jokes. I feel worse when someone fake laughs. Plus it feels more accomplished when people laugh because its actually funny. I'm not saying to mock an unfunny person but plz dont laugh at my unfunny jokes. I want truth not politeness.

Truth can equal polite unless you're being a jerk about it. Although, I suppose some people disagree with this.

1:50 "Women are almost afraid to be funny." They should be. I can't tell you how many times I, and so many other members of the Patriarchy club have beaten a woman senseless because she made me laugh. HOW DARE YOU MAKE ME LAUGH! I AM THE ALPHA MALE, I AM THE FUNNY ONE! I just can't stand when a woman makes me laugh, it gets me so ANGRY!! #TotallyNormalMaleBehaviorHere #IAmNotASockPuppetFeministThisIsReallyHowAllMenBehave

If someone tries to make you laugh and it’s not funny don’t laugh please, when I hang out with friends and one of us cracks a lame joke we all collectively don’t laugh and let me tell you it hurts especially if you’re the only one laughing at your joke but I’m glad I got to experience this or else I would never evolve and learn what’s funny and what’s not and how to be funnier so please if it’s not funny let them know

i literally laugh to my friends who are girls and are funny, or boys that are funny. And then if a girl/boy isn't funny i don't laugh, quite simply, it's not a gender thing to be funny or not :/

true i laughed. the first time i have heard that females weren't funny was from a female. don't think ive heard that from a male yet that i know of. I learned something today. amy shumer isn't funny imo. Also my class clown was a female that this feminist described in the video. In the science class. wasted class time but okay with me.

It's that self depricating humor she was talking about, something I think many feminists have a hard time at. It was a funny little touch to the video, we liked it - We even laughed. :) Curiously enough, I didn't even know it was a thing. Yes, I know, I know .. I live under a rock. It's nice down here. :) That's the advantage of having a gutter humor, you just look down in the gutter, and hey, there it is. :)
