Rebalancing is the most over rated thing an investor can do if you're a long term investor/holder. Just stop buying into the over weighted sectors and into the under weighted ones. Unless you're planning on retiring within 3 years. Just hold forever. Also if you're investing in a dividend income portfolio this makes my point that much more transparent.

@HughButler-lb6zs9 ай бұрын
Your ranking fits your investment goals and risk tolerance but your explanation of the pros and cons was valuable. I started income investing with MLP's. They are a tax nightmare My accountant charges $70.00 just to read a K1. I would charge $300.00. Also you have to pay taxes on certain income even in tax sheltered accounts. The last and worst feature is income is treated as return of capital for tax purposes. So you have to keep up with that and when all your capital has been returned, the income becomes taxable as ordinary income. The BDC's have the same treatment as REITs. But if the BDC's loan the capital at floating rates, their income will actually increase, but default risk increases. Thanks for the explanation. I suggest utilizing all type exept ETN's for diversification as they all behave differently under economic conditions.
@cohenmarioman3 жыл бұрын
Hey, tax guy here. The MLP tax situation is kind of crazy. Essentially all dividends are return of capital and you pay tax on the earnings of the fund. Most of the energy mlps lose money due to tax depreciation but you can’t take the losses so they sit there until you sell it. However when you sell an energy mlp part of the gain or loss is ordinary income due to hot assets. There are some non energy mlps that don’t spit off ordinary income or passive losses thankfully. Oak tree has a few good ones. Black stone too. Just K-1 reporting can be difficult if you get a large investment in them. A small investment won’t do much thankfully.

Let's dive into MPW. Will it do well with a possible rate cut from the Fed? What about OHI or the other stocks like them?
@HughButler-lb6zs9 ай бұрын
MPW is out of favor with the market and receives additional pressure from short sellers. Yes, lower interest rates will reduce their operating costs. Their biggest problem is that their two largest tenants are not paying their rent. If that problem can be solved, MPW will be OK. If not, they could do a reverse stock split, reduce the dividend again, or go bankrupt. My capital investment is down about 75% ,so any more drop in market price offers much less risk. They have 19 billion in assets with 10 billion in debt, so their value is between 10 to 14 dollars per share . They currently are paying $.15 per share dividend every quarter. I personally would not put more money into this reit until I saw a better picture of the future. But, they are about 1% of my portfolio. Your situation will be totally different.
