voilà (walla) is essentially a contraction of "voir là" or roughly "see there" or loosely translated "there it is" which is why English speaking people say it when something is unveiled. An analogous contracted phrase in English is "goodbye" which is actually a contraction of the phrase "God be with ye".

Hi Jane. I didn't even notice the error. I'm 60+/stroke raised in the NYC suburbs, college degree. Same issues as you. I've never read the word, never wrote it but I have heard it. The English language is very poor at spelling French words. Imagine reading "hors d'oeuvres" and trying to sound that one out!

Haha. Voila actually pronounces: "V'wa-lah", with a v sound in the beginning. While we're at it.. En Garde, when 2 gentlemen have swords face each other, they say En Garde but it pronounces "on guard"...it probably means On Guard in french. Anyways, love your stories & love your 2 cents during or after the stories, disregard those who complain, tell them to kick rocks. You didn't force them to be on your channel, they're crazy to think they can tell you what you should or shouldn't do on your own channel.

Thanks Cam for an exciting start to the week. I woke up early, like 3am early, with a horrible migraine and after taking some tablets and eating a banana to make sure they stayed down, I lay here in bed with my eyes closed and listened to that Southern drawl of yours and now I'm going to try and get a little bit more sleep. It was a another good story which Kentucky seems to have no shortage of. Can't wait to catch up with the podcasts and maybe get myself some Yeti Bars as Christmas gifts for family and friends. Take care Cam and it's ALWAYS good to hear your voice! From country NSW Australia.

Man, you are too funny!!!! LOL ... I love that you have no problem not knowing something. I find that refreshing. I also think there is no shame in not knowing something. I myself, am a Spanish/English interpreter and translator. Because of that I have become humble before anything language because the more I learn, the bigger the gap of what I don't know opens up before my eyes. So thank you for your comments, I absolutely love them ... all! Just for fun, "Voilà" means something like "there it is" "there you have it", and in English it is used sort of humorously. Thank you for what you do; I am sure it fills most of your audience with joy. It does for me.

A viola is also a stringed instrument (usually in an orchestra). And actually, the way the French word "voila" would be pronounced phonetically in English would be as "voy-la", which isn't how Cam said it either, lol! But of course, it's all irrelevant to the subject matter of this channel, I know.

I heard it in the podcast but i just grinned and went on listening. It so funny if somebody is reading and something is misspelled they just correct it in their head but if they are listening to somebody else then i gotta correct this! Lol I guess if it is silent and it comes in through your eyes it can be silently handled lol if it is spoken and comes in through the ear then it requires an audible correction! Eyes silent, ears audible, got it dude! 🤣 sorry Cam, just didn't know how that worked i guess.

Cam, 'voilà' is not pronouced 'wa-la' but 'vwa-la'. It is a common misunderstanding so don't feel bad. As you said, it is a French word which means, ''see there' (vois-là) or where we could say in English, 'behold'. Magicians tend to use it a lot in their act. A lot of Anglophones have trouble getting their tongues around French diphthongs like the 'vwa' sound. The French word for glory is 'gloire'. It is pronounced 'glwar'. That is a real tongue-twister for me. So, that is my contribution to the deluge of comments you have already amassed. Great story, BTW. Cheers, Buddy!

Yes true, I m French and vwa-la is the good way, sometimes I heard "et voilà", that is more correct in French than voilà alone. 👍🏻
