In my experience the ceramic type media clog with biofilm and detritus- rendering useless the majority of the internal pore structure. Also once clogged the water in your sump takes the path of least resistance and flows around, not through the ceramic type medias. I resolved this by using foam which dies not clog and the water flow is forced through this media maximizing contact with an active biofilm.

It’s just silicone,cut it and relocate glass. I would suggest taking you media and turning them to allow easy removal like a file cabinet. But we’ll done.

How is that 3/32 glass holding up? Ive been seeing mixed reviews about that glass being too thin for this type of thing. Glass shops want $120+ for a few sheets of glass.

I am considering making a sump for my 180 I’m getting but am chancing my mind looks like the 5gal bucket canister is easier and cheaper to make

All depends on filter pad material and what your bio load will be it will probably change as the tank evolves

Good evening - I have been in the hobby for 50 years but have never built a sump. Your video was very clear, and well explained. I too am building a 40 gallon breeder sump for my 125 gallon discus tank. Are there any rules of thumb that determine the size of the compartments, the distance between the two plates of the baffles and finally, the height of the baffle. I have not been able to find any guidance. Thanks in advance.

No it all about what you need ..we’ll your fish’s needs all about housing all the beneficial bacteria or all the bell and whistles you want to add.

Why not a wet/dry design...?
@glassboxaquarist91473 жыл бұрын
You could there are dozens of different ways that all would work great I was just keeping it simple..
@2869may3 жыл бұрын
@@glassboxaquarist9147 I understand keeping it simple for your first sump build... But changes you would have to make are really simple, and are far outweighed by the efficiency of wet/dry filtration. Every fish farm video I've seen, they all implement trickle towers because the bacteria that forms in a wet/dry consume more waste. It also provides excellent oxygenation.. I'm not sh!ting on what you've done, but if you're going to build a sump, why not get the most out of it with a few simple changes.? Good luck brother.

@@2869may hey can u share the link or something that I'll be able to fully understand what you're saying. I'm new in fish keeping. I hope you'd be kind enough to share more of your knowledge.
