In this video, I wanted to show you guys how I made a bypass oil filtration kit for my 6.0 powerstroke on a budget! It works wicked good and I spent about $150 bucks doing it. Compare that to the big name kits out there and you'll save at least $230 bucks! You can put that towards an exhaust kit, a tuner, some gauges, an intake, or maybe just a lot of beer! This set up will filter down to 3 microns. Clean oil is key in these engines. If you choose to go with the Amsoil filter instead of the Baldwin, it will filter down to 1-2 microns (depending on who you talk to). This concept can apply to any vehicle and any engine. The cleaner the oil, the longer your engine will last. Not to mention, in many cases you can really extend your oil change intervals saving you more money$! I hope you guys find this video useful. Go out and build something!
SIDE NOTE- Unfortunately, I sold my truck before I could do the oil analysis fallow ups I wanted to do. Stay tuned for future videos with new projects to show you guys how to do things ON THE CHEAP!

Ive been telling people for 60 years that John Frantz invented the adapter that allowed you to use toilet paper in the old canister filters in 1953. Saw Ebay had a Purolator toilet paper adapter probably older than the Frantz adaprer. Someone found 5 of them wrapped in news papers from the 40s and 50s. Looked like a Fram canister with a toilet paper internal canister.. They were for 31 and later Chevrolet engines. I recently adapted a Ford flat head V8 canister filter to use Scott 1000 and put it on a Ford diesel tractor. Ebay wanted 99 dollars for the Purolator.

I did a fleet of Powerstrokes when the 6.0s first came out. I didnt have the filter cap for pressure. Dont remember where I got the pressure. Probably found a pipe plug. I do remember tapping the filler neck. Jackmaster claims 1 micron filtration. Motor Guard claimed submicronic filtration. In the old days all we had was 2 ply facial quality.TP. Now you can get 30 dollar TP.. I just put a roll of Great Value 1000 sheet from Walmart in the Jackmaster Classic and the over 50 year old Motor Guard on the 76 F 250 with the 390. The Frantz is obsolete now. About the only thing that fits the Frantz is the Frantz elements. Started with the Frantz and Standard Delo in 1963. Most small spin on filters like came on my 64 Rambler American flat head 6 are rated at 10 microns. The longer ones would do better. The bypass filter on the Rambler was upside down on the head with steel oil lines. The oil was always dirty. I cured that problem with a Frantz oil cleaner.

Years ago a guy had me put a paper towel Gulf Coast filter on 7.3 He came back in a few months and had me put the filter on a 6.0. Then he came back and told me the 6.0s had injecter problems. He had a new Dodge Cummins for me to put the filter on. I dont drain oil so I was happy when he said while you are at it change the oil. Didnt buy oil for the 6.9 when he came around. The old 6.9 needed a quart of oil about every 600 miles. Had over 300 K miles on it when I bought it. This guy bought new trucks. The NASA engineer was talking about him when he said we dont keep our rigs long enough for the filters to pay. Im thinking damn I just put oil and fuel filters on several 6.0s. Didnt get any complaints. There was an attorney in Dallas that said on TV if you bought a 6.0 give me a call. Ed Wallace a car guy on the radio said Ford went from the best engine ever put in a truck the 7.3 to the worse engine ever put in a truck the 6.0. I was getting paranoid. You dont want engine problems with engines you put non stock filters on.

I just got a Australian. Jackmaster .didnt need one. I have every thing equipped that has an oil pump. As far as I can tell it is the best I have ever seen. I had to see one. Looks like it was designed to use toilet paper. It had the Jackmaster element that has a wrap that looks like panty hose material. Its for sure the strongest of the TP filters. Looks like something you would put on a off road truck. I think if you want the best and have money burning a hole in your pocket this is it. I have Motor Guards over 50 years old that cost me about 30 bucks. Those days are gone. When i was selling Gulf Coast filters I did a fleet of tree service vehicles. The 6.0s had just came out. I could have used some of these items. The 7.3s had a pipe plug for pressure and a 3 /8 plug at the bottom of the engine skirt for a return. Needed a 5/16 square tool to get it out. I paid about 250 dollars for the Jackmaster including shipping from Australia. No oil hose and fittings I normally use Gates transmission cooler hose from O Reilly's. Ace hardware has most of the fittings I need. I use 3/8 hose. Put a roll of Great Value 1000 in the Jackmaster. I will use the factory element later. I use toilet paper. The Jackmaster has no center tube like the Frantz. It uses the toilet paper core for a center tube. Some of the new paper is getting larger cores. Wont matter with the Jackmaster. Never dealt with male fittings before. Used 1/4 female pipe to 3/8 hose barbs adapters..couple rounds of teflon tape. Dont know what the one with the tee handle hose and fittings cost. Almost 60 years of using toilet paper. Too old to change. To be effective a filter needs to be absorbent like toilet paper paper towels cotton pulverized newspapers like the Fleet Guard 750s or the Luberfiners or Wix and others that make the elements. Some of the big 750 cartridges use less effective pleated paper. I put the big Gulf Coast O 1s on the tree service vehicles. They are made of hydraulic cylinder stock. Of course the strongest and heaviest of the big filters. 1 1/2 gallons and 3 gallons. Some Ram Cummins owners are wanting the 1 1/2 gallon models. A NASA diesel equipment engineer said the filters are only for industrial use. We dont keep our rigs long enough. Probably true.

The old Ford flat head V8 engines had a optional equipment bypass filter that bolted to the head. I bought one years ago when I was researching bypass filters. I had forgotten I had it. Was looking for a Ford 8N tractor. Ended up with a Japanese Ford diesel.about the same size. While digging for parts I found the old Ford filter. John Frantz got his start adapting the old canister filters to use superior Toilet paper in 1953. I adapted it to Scott 1000 and put it on the tractor. Its a lot better than the Frantz adapter.and simpler.. Filters the same. I didnt add an orifice because I used a sandwich adapter..The 79 model 1900 is a little rough from being out in the weather but the 3 cylinder engine appears to be in near new condition.

My 64 Rambler American came with a spin on bypass filter mounted to the flat head upside down. It didnt clean oil. A bigger spin on would have cleaned oil better but probably not good enough. I solved the dirty oil problem with a Frantz oil cleaner. They cost 29.95 in 1963. The Delo turned golden and stayed that way. Dont know what the Frantz cost now but the advantage is cleaner oil. All I use now is Motor Guards and Gulf Coasts. I get my filter elements from Walmart. Scott or Great Value 1000. I have a dozen or so bypass filters in use.I sometimes make an orifice out of a wire welder tip.Almost 60 years of clean oil with very few oil drains.

The other day I bought a 16 pack of Great Value 1000 from Walmart. They had the smaller core and were the same diameter as we used in the 60s. All I use now is the Motor Guard and Gulf Coast jrs. They are the easiest to service. They are top loaders. Sister wrecked the old Impala. Lost my last two Frantzs. Not sure what is happening with the Gulf Coast 01 juniors. Saw some on ebay. NASA saw my posts and started using the paper towel filters. The diesel engineer said the filters are only good for industrial use. We dont keep our equipment long enough. I just changed the 50 some year old Motor Guard on the 76 F250 with the 390. I probably paid less than 50 bucks for it. The pleated paper filters are pretty much a joke. Only good for fuel and full flow oil filters. Converted some Motor Guard M 30 compressed air filters to motor oil.To make orifices for them I got a 1/4 pipe Male to female adapter ran a 1/8 tap into the female end. Put a brass plug in. The one that takes a Allen wrench. Drilled it 1/16. Cut some aircraft aluminum internal parts. Easier to find one already factory made. Motor Guard converted to compressed air filter years ago. The big Fleetguard 750 filters use pulverized newspapers in their best filter elements. Also wood chips.. the same for Luberfiners. Bought a WIX same thing. Have seen cotton waste in Luberfiners. Cummins at one time claimed a 80% increased in engine life using the filters. Worth going after. The Frantz is a poor design for servicing. Its the best known. John Frantz got his start converting the old Fram and other canister filters to use toilet paper. You can still find the famous 3 stackers on marine engines.They were the same as a Fram but was tall enough to take 3 rolls of toilet paper. Been pretty much replaced by Gulf Coast paper towel filters.They were designed to take Bounty Big roll paper towels. They have their own elements now.. a NASA diesel equipment engineer invited me down to talk about oil filters.I put him in touch with people that understand big engines. I see they are listed as a customer. They were moving the shuttle then.

I was rather dissappointed when I called Baldwin and a "Randy" in service engineering said "He wouldn't do it" when I asked him about using the fuel filter. I really called because I'm having a hard time finding the correct adapter nipple. After he said what he said, I didn't ask anymore. He said the Baldwin oil bypass filter goes do the 5 absolute. I guess I'm going to work on putting an Amsoil on. . . . You video helped and I appreciate it, just wish I talked to the same tech you did. . . . Joe

Got told by Wix and Baldwin, that this filter isn't the right material. That you should not use this filter for oil bypass. Wix informed me that Amsoil has a patent on their aftermarket filter for this. They have answered this question a million times. They informed me that if i did go with this. I would end up with pieces in my engine. It isn't about durability its about compatibility and degradation. Different chemicals degrade materials differently. I am currently looking at the Frantz oil bypass unit. Simply because the price of the filters is a lot cheaper.

I'm working on a B50 install because thats what it was designed for and there is a longer version some guys have put on their B series Cummins. I have the TP Frantz and its OK but the paper roll is not as clean as people say. I read some blogs about using the CAT fuel filter from ten years ago and no one said anything about the paper coming apart from heat or incompatibility with lube oil. The parts guys say this because the application is questionable per the engineers.

The Wix part number is 24755. This adaptor head has 1/8" NPT inlet and outlet, same as what Frantz has used for many years. I am installing this with a Frantz sandwich adaptor, which mounts between the block and the main oil filter (factory full flow). The Wix filter for this adaptor is the 51050, and the NAPA filter is 1050. The Baldwin filter is B50 and the Luberfiner is the PB50. All of these filters are made for oil bypass duties and are 10 micron nominal, which is similar to most fuel filters. Longer versions are available if you have the room, or if you are installing on a large engine.

Many years ago when I was working on trucks and driving them I cut open a Luberfiner element. It was packed with cotton. The last one I cut open was a Cummins Fleetguard 750 . It was packed with pulverized newspapers and wood chips. Dont know what the wood chips did. Cummins claimed a 80% increase in engine life using these filters. No one including me liked to deal with them. The big double roll filters made by Gulf.Coast are even better because the oil has to travel thru 22 inches of media. Over the road trucks have over 1 million miles now with no oil drains. I know some Dodge Cummins are using them now. Saw a 5 ton army truck with one . It was the single roll one. Bounty Big roll towels were used when I saw that one. One guy said he gets his from Costco. They also have the Gulf Coast filters elements. Saw a toilet paper one on a USAF Humvee years ago. When I was selling them they took me around. They are on Locomotives engines on drilling rigs. They pass electric current thru a used oil sample to see if it is ok. Contaminated oil conducts electric different than the new oil the instrument is zeroed on. That was a big deal when a NASA engineer got into a debate with me and asked for a propaganda package. I didnt know the filters made new oil cleaner. I thought new oil was clean. We learn. They have some big engines. They were moving the shuttle around. Some things I cant share. NASA uses a lot of fuel filters.They are 1 micron filters.

I dont claim to know much about the 6.0. What little I know suggests clean oil is critical in that engine. Ive installed paper towel Gulf Coast filters on a few. I put toilet paper Gulf Coast junior filters on the fuel. I had little to say about it. The Fleet owner had a friend that worked as a lubrication engineer on a offshore rig. I was just an installer. The 1 and 1/2 gallon filters went on the frames. They brought me conventional Walmart diesel rated oil. They told me oil is oil. That was when the 6.0 first came out. I suppose if you have a lot of equipment the price of oil is a big deal.
@ralphwood8818
@ralphwood8818 3 жыл бұрын
Not sure what they cost now but the Frantz is a lot better filter because they give you a lot cleaner oil. My favorite little filter is the Gulf Coast junior. It takes depth to clean oil. Pleated paper doesnt do it. The orifice helps. I sometimes use a .025 wire welder tip to make mine. As a rule if the filter is toilet paper or looks like toilet paper it will clean oil. Not sure they still make the Junior now. All I have now is old Gulf Coasts and old Motor Guards. Modified.a couple of Motor Guard comprrssed air filters to filter Motor oil.

Ralph, Insane Diesel and KleenOil both make bypass filters and have a few different sizes. The cost of their replacement elements is a real deterrent to me. Each element is around 40 to 70 USD. That makes the Frantz very attractive and practical.
@ralphwood8818

Frantz doesnt do so well with toilet paper. Frantz was designed for 1 1/2 inch core TP. Getting hard to find. Of course the Frantz elements fit. When Frantz went broke years ago.A Frantz dealer improved the TP filters with a Gulf Coast junior. The Jackmaster. Is similar. I think the Jackmaster is working with Gulf Coast filters . I bought a Jackmaster to see if they are the best available. They are.like the Gulf Coast junior. You push the TP in and put on the lid. Like the Gulf Coast junior they put in a larger seal for the larger core TP. They have the expensive elements but realize most of us will use TP.. The Frantz is a bad design but is the best known. I got the Jackmaster Classic. Personally I cant see buying the more expensive model. I suspect the Classic is the origional high quality Jackmaster. I have a wrench to remove the lid and long nosed pliers to remove the used TP. I think Gulf Coast filters are too busy with the big filter systems and had to recommend the best little filter for their big customers. An offshore rig not only have locomotive engines they have fork lifts and such. The Jackmaster Ultra looks very similar to the Triple R. It is depressing watching people trying to make the Frantz fit the shorter paper with larger cores on KZbin. Then they notice there is no screen imprint which means the oil is bypassing the core seal. Motor Guard was the first filter to beat the Frantz on design. All they make is compressed air filters now. I have a couple over 50 years old.They couldnt compete with the better known Frantz. Frantz was suing the hell out of them.

@@ralphwood8818 Frantz does make a solid element now. Frantz filters have worked well for me for the last 40 years or more. I will look into the Gulf coast Junior. Each design has it's advantages and suitability to applications. Long lasting hose is a must, I find.

I started with the Frantz and Delo 30 weight in 1963. TP fit in those days. The AeroFrantz took the same TP. The paper is different now. Frantz stayed with the rediculous design. The top loaders designed the filters to fit TP. The Australian Jackmaster claims their elements are better than TP. That is debatable. I appreciate that they put larger core seals in the bottom for their.1 1/2 inchcore or the larger core TP. The last Great Value 1000 I got from Walmart has a larger core and smaller diameter roll. Was unrolling 30 rounds. Didnt un roll any this time. The shorter rolls dont matter with the top loaders. The lousy design of the Frantz was okay when there was nothing better and TP fit. The Jackmaster filter element looks like a very high quality roll of TP in a sock.The sock has a ring to pull out the element by the fabric. Dont tell anyone but I cut open the sock to see what was inside.I have long nosed pliers to remove the used TP and a wrench to remove the lid.

Also the slower the flow thru the filter the better the cleaning. The bypass filter can take it's time. Bypass filters have been around for a hundred years. The factory installed bypass filter on the 64 Rambler American had the orifice at the outlet.It was in the filter. I think the filter mount also had an orifice. The Jackmaster has the orifice at the outlet. At one time Jackmaster made jacks. Been around since 1954. Frantz since 1953.A little trivia. The big Gulf Coast 3 gallon filter has the 1/16 inch orifice at the inlet. When they used Bounty big roll paper towels the oil soaked down thru two rolls end to end top to bottom then back to the engine. 1/16 inch has been pretty standard on small filters since the 20s. The old canister filters such as Fram and Purolator had the orifice at the outlet. My Jackmaster has it at the outlet.

@@ralphwood8818 A 1/16" orifice was ok with the thick oil used before 1980. Notice in the video, Dwight pointed out .030" holes in the fittings. Very necessary with today's lower viscosity oils. A 1/16 orifice would flow too much oil and may cause unwanted problems.

The smaller the better.on some of the lawn mowers I made.orifices oit of .025 wire feed welder tips. The Jackmaster has a very small orifice at the outlet. When I was selling Gulf Coast filters one of my Dodge Cummins customers told me he drilled out the orifice so it would filter faster. Not good. I think the 3 gallon Gulf Coast 02 has a 1/16 orifice at the inlet. At work I used the 1 1/2 gallon 0 1 on the yard tractors and the hydraulic systems. Jackmaster lists the size of their orifice in metric on their website. They are over kill on information. They will educate the hell out of you. We had some trouble before full flow filters when the old cars had a lot of large stuff in the oil. Some bypass filters had the orifice at the inlet where it would clog. I started with Frantz in 1963. We were still dealing with the old cars. Some were so sludged up you had to open them up and clean them before installing the Frantz. Or change the Frantz every 50 miles. Some Frantzs had the orifice at the inlet.

It shouldn't rob any pressure as it will only being taking a couple psi from the low pressure oil side. Since it is a bypass filter it is only filtering a small amount of oil.
@ralphwood8818
@ralphwood8818 2 жыл бұрын
Bypass filters have been around for 100 years. They all have restrictors . Its the same for Luberfiner Cummins Fleetguard. A few heavy duty truck filters use a little larger orifice because the oil pump is so much larger. There was a time when all filters were bypass filters and were optional equipment. Any automotive engineer can explain it. You cant prove anything to a skeptic. My lawn mowers pump a lot less oil than a Ford. They have the same size orifice as the Ford. Most oil the Ford pumps is returned to the oil pan thru the oil pump relief valve.. that keeps the oil pump drive from breaking. A quart or two a minute is nothing. If the oil pressure goes to zero at idle your relief valve is probably stuck open. Usually caused by dirty oil.
@tarquineous
@tarquineous 2 жыл бұрын
Riddick: Oil pumps in engines will pump much more than what can flow through the engine. They also put out fairly high pressure, like 90 to 120 psi. So to control this, the pumps have a relief valve, pre set with a spring. Most relief valves are set at 40 psi. Oil is diverted back into the oil pan through the relief valve. So, there is plenty of oil and oil pressure to feed through a bypass filter.

Sure could but If you want a cooler in this way you *should* use a thermostatic bypass valve to keep it from using cooler until oil warms up or it will cause extra wear during warmup period
@tarquineous
@tarquineous 2 жыл бұрын
@@jojomorgan8556 I've thought of using a thermostatic valve, but never actually installed one. A necessity with thicker oil in very cold weather. It would also keep water out of a paper filter. Another reason to use a small orifice size. Cold oil flows slower.

What is the purpose of the .030 restrictor? I would think high flow is better. I was thinking your hoses were small, but the flow through that fitting is small.
@WaddyBronco
@WaddyBronco 3 жыл бұрын
Cliff, the reason for the restrictor is because the bypass oil filter isn’t a full flow system, due to the finer filter media. It should flow through the filter slowly, making that filter more efficient. It also maintains the engines oil pressure and won’t push the limits of the oil pump due increased oil volume. Hope that helps.

Bypass filters have been around for 100 years. They all have restrictors. Normally they are 1/16". Normally a little larger on the big Luberfiner type filters because the filter and oil pump is larger. The big Gulf Coast bypass filters they use on over the road trucks use the same size orifice as the little filters. 1/16"The factory installed optional equipment bypass filter on my 41 Dodge had a decal on it with a picture of a dip stick with clean oil on it. It read the dip stick tells the story. It was far superior to the full flow filter at cleaning oil. The orifice was 1/16" It used cotton the same as the Luberfiner. Now they mostly use pulverized newspapers. The inferior pleated.paper has replaced the cotton. The best is toilet paper and paper towels at cleaning oil. My new 64 Rambler American came with a spin on bypass filter with the orifice inside the filter. Got tired of.dirty oil and installed a Frantz oil cleaner. No more oil drains. Paid 29.95 for the Frantz. The spin on was less than 2 bucks. Scott toilet paper was.about 25 cents. The over head valve Rambler had a full flow filter. Did a fleet of trucks when the 6.0 came out. Luckily most were 7.3 s The oil filter cap and the fill cap would.have been helpful. I dont miss that job. They called.awhile back. They had more trucks. Told them to call Gulf Coast Filters. Cant get up and down anymore. Those people wanted the big Gulf Coast 01 paper towel filters on all the.powerstrokes.
@ralphwood8818
@ralphwood8818 3 жыл бұрын
The slower the oil goes thru a oil filter the better the cleaning. That's why full flow filters cant clean oil. When I was selling Gulf Coast Filters one of my Cummins customers drilled out the orifice to increase the flow. Bad mistake. The 7.3 was like a big truck engine. A pipe plug for pressure and a pipe plug for a return. Did a fleet ground down a 3/8 extension to 5/16 to remove the 3/8 plug at the bottom of the engine skirt for the return.

@WaddyBronco

The system is meant to BYPASS 10% of oil flow to filter through a much finer filter media. It’s not bypassing any components. The idea is to have very clean oil.

So one of the benefits to doing the bypass oil filter is having super clean oil that won’t plug up in the oil cooler. It’s not a fix for the oil cooler but if you aren’t having any problems with yours currently, it would help prevent any clogging or failures.

@WaddyBronco

@@curlyelp7530 so the other issue with these engines that this modification is awesome for is the hpop and hydraulically actuated injectors. Since the injectors run off of oil engine oil pressure they are susceptible to sticking from dirty oil. So the cleaner, the better as far as the injectors go. Other than that anything that requires oil will absolutely live longer.

Recently bought a Australian Jackmaster Classic off Ebay. Looks like it is the best in production. Its like the Gulf Coast junior. You just push in the TP and put on the lid. Jackmaster claims their filter elements are better than TP but they set up the Filters to take the larger core TP with a larger core seal. About the only element that fits the Frantz is the Frantz elements.

Up to you. If the filter is filtering out more than the main filter than there should be a result. If your decision is about what actual filter to run, then go for the amsoil filter. The way the oil is making it’s way to the bypass filter isn’t any different than the one you’d buy as a kit. I don’t turn my comments off. I like conversation.

I think if you are a young guy you would be better off getting a Jackmaster or Gulf Coast Junior. The Gulf coast junior migbt be out of production. The Frantz is a poor design for this odd ball size TP. They were designed only for 1 1/2 inch core paper. The Frantz elements work but I like to use Scott or Great Value 1000. Jackmaster has nice wrapped elements. Im a toilet paper guy. A lifetime filter isnt such a big deal to me im too old. I have Motor Guards over 50 years old. I wonder if any of the filters I installed at work have been taken care of after I left. Cummins Detroit Cats. Toyota lift trucks.

You have good hose and Fittings.1/4 works fine.It was simple when I started. We had american cars and VW beetles. All gasoline. For the trucks and other diesel engines we had the Frantz 3 stackers. All Motor Guard had was toilet paper filters. The bigger the engine the more toilet paper filters you manifolded togerher.. They were the best at the time. All Motor Guard makes now is compressed air filters. Motor Guard was the only one safe to use for compressed air.Dont know if the Gulf Coast junior is still in production. You can still find them. The Jackmaster filter has been around since 1954. They are nice.If I had to choose between the Gulf Coast and Jackmaster it would be difficult. The Frantz isnt the best design but is the best known..Gulf Coast filters is mostly into heavy duty diesels like Shell offshore rigs.Those are locomotive engines

I did a fleet of Powerstrokes when the 6.0 first came out. I didnt have the aluminum lid for getting pressure. I must have found a pipe plug for pressure. I drilled and tapped the fill neck to return the clean oil. The 7.3s had a pipe plug near the full flow filter to get pressure to the filter. A 3/8 inch pipe plug in the bottom of the engine skirt for a return. It took a 5/16 square tool to remove it. This guy required A Gulf Coast 0-1 paper towel filter bolted to the frame. I used the Gulf coast junior on my 6.9. Used a self tapping hollow bolt in the fill neck for a return. If you remove the plastic fill neck to drll and tap it on the 6.0 be sure to mark it first.

How did that Baldwin fuel filter work as an oil filter?
@WaddyBronco
@WaddyBronco 6 жыл бұрын
superdutyonplanets I asked Baldwin if it would work and they said yes. The element in the filter is made to not break down from fuel running through it. Oil obviously won’t break this stuff down like fuel would. So that’s why it works. There’s a lot of people out there using this filter on all kinds of different engines.
