Great looking planters! Great video! Only suggestion I would make is to use a 1/4 round router bit and soften the tops of the legs.

That's a great idea, actually, and now that I'm thinking about it would be great for the bottom of the legs. I do it on the bottom of my legs when i remember. Helps keep the edges from splitting when you drag them.

Thats awesome. It really is a simple build and looks good, I plan to make a change on the inside corners of the planter boxes to make sure it last longer. Mine is 3-4 years old and still standing, so thats good. The neighborhood cats love to lie in them. lol

Yep. I had someone ask for one last year. If I remember correctly, I made it tiers taller and was a leaner. Please report back. Good luck. I've also thought a hanger would be cool-something that hung from a tall fence. That way, you wouldn't lose real estate under it.

Thank you so much for the comment. This stand is my favorite project of the year. I can make about 5-10 in a weekend if its my main project for the weekend. I usually make them through the week after work and then post them on the weekends. Sell out usually.

@@352508 🤣 1k views and no one including myself ever caught that lol. I build 2, 3, and 4. Not sure what was thinking. 🤣🤦🏻‍♂️. I started out making 2’ wide for like two years. One day this lady asked for a 3’ wide one. I posted pictures and since then they are just about all 36” wide now.

Nice design. I think your stand is sturdy enough without the 4 horizontal pieces connecting both sides (for the boxes to rest on)

Not necessarily. The only thing holding the boxes together are 1 1/4" screws going into 5/8 picket. It wouldn't take much racking for it to twist. If i was going to make an adjustment id probably add 1'' square stock into each corner to add longer screws. Perhaps then. I want to put together a video on searching for discounted lumber. I buy my cedar for usually around 70% off. So ill get 12' 5/4x1's for like 3-4. Realistically it may only cost an extra $6 for me to add all that lumber and I think it makes it very sturdy. Thanks for the input. I try and read all the comments. I been super busy as of late.

That's a nice discount you got there. Where I am, the price of lumber is ridiculous. The 5"x6' picket fence is over $5. Even SFP 2x4 are $4.50.

I just accidentally found your video and I'm intrigued with your projects but I have a question. Do you drill drain holes in the herb boxes? I'm also thinking these could be built to fit plastic or even metal planting trays inside to help make the cedar last even longer. Just a thought. good job, thanks for sharing

I do predrill. As soon as the wood splits you need to make a new hole. Ive found taking the time to predrill works best. There isnt much meat there. The idea of plastic containers is a great idea.

I placed the bottom box like 4-6" off the bottom. What ever I do on the bottomw i match on top. then split the difference. I advertise as 48" tall but at an angle. Depending on the piece you start with I sometimes fudge the numbers. A ten footer works but an 8 footer wont. Just have fun with it and learn from the first one. When I make a few they are all the same. The next time i make them they are different. Hope that helps

Oh i forgot screw size. I usually use 2" or 2.5" for all the structural stuff. For the boxes, I use 1 1/8". I think I'll be adding a wood piece in the corners. I feel like I'd like a little more bite in the corners than in between the 5/8" picket.

Lol. I do not. two years ago i used my vacation time and a pallet of leftover pickets from planter builds and decided I need a fence. Ive never built a fence so I decided thats what i need in my life. Since I was doing it myself I made the nicest fence I could. The top caps are 2x6. I found the idea while looking at pinterest. I seen a really nice privacy fence. I kinda of copied and upgraded features and just made it shorter. My side fence is nice too. It transitions from a 4' to a 6' so I have some diagonal sections that grow in size. My neighbors love it. Most importantly so do I.

Do you go back in and add drainage holes for the water? Paint with any wood preserving oil? I am in Portugal and starting some raised beds. Love your design on this herb planter.

Hi. I do not paint or stain. I hate when I stain and someone makes comments about stain leeching into soil. Or if I paint a project people want it a different color. Ive learned to just make everything "ready for paint or stain" I be like "enjoy painting or staining with your kids". Its never really worth my time. Id say the best thing possibly to preserve would be to line with plastic but Ive heard people say that that will trap moisture and promote rot as well. I do not add drainage wholes because there is a long gap between the bottom piece and the side pieces. When you assemble them you could have anywhere from a 1/4 inch to and 1/8 gap. wish I could add pictures.

@@bylpugel9863 I have good success selling from $75 for a 24” wide 3 tier, up to $150 for 36” wide 4 tier. I buy cull lumber from the big box stores during the year. I have a video kind of showing that on my channel. Ive made them for as low as $30. A ton Of variables but when the season comes I have a ton Of material to use. When I run out I pay full price.

I usually buy my pickets when I find them sifted through and in the cull lumber pile. Three years in a row Ive been able to buy a pallet with tons of pickets for sometimes less then a buck a piece. I would say on average I can build this stand for about $40. If I bought everything full price would be around $75. I have note looked at prices this year however. I started a new job April 1st and its put a damper on my garage time. I have a few projects i need to put together in the editing department and Ill be sharing soon.

Design question - why don't you build the shelf as the bottom of the box rather than having the extra pieces?

You could however the boxes are made from cedar pickets. not much wood there for screws to hold up the weight. IMO. I usually take a picture of myself standing on the shelf and add to my for sale ads. I weigh 250. Same with my box planters. I stand inside them sometimes. Same with my cornhole boards. I stand on top of them. Just like any client to know its built to last. Thanks for the question.

@@terryjohnson9082 I was thinking about your comment some more. I've been building this planter for 4 years now but had to think back. Originally the idea was to build the planter with shelves and make boxes with handles that could be removed. Like rope handles or something. At the time it was harder to think about how to make all that happen so I made the boxes and just screwed them to the shelves. Determined it really strengthened the structure of the planter. I just been rolling with that since. haha. just thought id add that to the thought. Have a good day...

Most of what I build falls in the 100-200 range. I've found it doesn't matter what I build its more about how much people are willing to spend. I build with different material depending on what I find. Helps me keep the cost down while providing something that looks good for someone. I get a lot of requests for custom stuff. That's where the price has big differences.

I do not. I make them in the spring time. I make between 30 and 50 of these. I just build in my spare time and use the money to buy more material haha make more stuff

Actually this year ill make some updates. Because the boxes are always wet from soil screws my come out easier than you may think. Im thinking off using an additional square piece in the corner to have more for a screw to bite into. Not sure if that makes sense or not.
