We easily converted our pantry shelves into pullout drawers using pocket holes.

For beginners such as us, using pocket holes to make drawers is just too easy and the drawers work like a charm.

Another tip would be to mount the face against the pocket hole end of the drawer. Then the holes would be hidden behind the face and on the back side of the drawer.

I did something like this years ago in my kitchen. The shelves were up high above my head. I had plexiglass bottoms on the shelves. I am able to view what’s in the back of the shelf from below to see if I really did have what I was looking for, before using a stool to get up to that height. I appreciated how you showed each step of construction thanks. I kind of hate the music during the demo parts. Just me !

I had actually measured the cabinet insides before I put in the rails and noticed a discrepancy and thought it best to measure again after installing the rails to account for differences that might occur if the spacers were warped or not planed and sanded to the exact same thickness. I am really starting to think we are brothers from another mother. I keep doing things just like you. (I made these drawers in our other house, but the quality of the video was poor and it was about time convert these cabinets as well) On a side note, I am upset how many things you have done that I have planned. We hear similar comments about our channel name but often from those who do not manage their money properly. When people own a house, things always happen and require repairs. As an example, water got into the ceiling of my home and the ceiling came down and there was lots of damage. I cannot leave big holes in the ceiling so we researched how much it would cost to hire a carpenter to fix it. The estimate is VERY expensive. Instead of paying a carpenter, I bought some tools. The cost of the tools was much less that the price of a carpenter. I then studied and learned how to repair my ceiling myself. When I finished, I then gained new tools that I could use to make and repair other things in the house. The idea of my channel is that you do NOT have to be rich to make and repair things by yourself. many of the things I do can actually be accomplished by others who are not wealthy (Poor Men & Women). My workshop was often outside. If you watch my older videos, I also cut and painted inside my living room. I now have a garage where I work because I made benches that are on wheels. I move them to the center of the garage to work and then I clean up and park my car in the garage. I do not have a separate workshop. I use what little space I have. I noticed your picture and you have a lovely scarf. Maybe you too are poor but instead of buying a scarf, you could buy a sewing machine and make beautiful clothes yourself. You may be poor but if you buy a sewing machine, you can make wonderful clothes. I hope this helps you to understand and you should not assume I am rich or poor. It is just a name for our channel. Also, we both work full time jobs and still have made 300 videos and we post them virtually every week for 7 years. Because of this, some companies have been so kind to bless us with free tools and ask that we make a video about the tool. So we earned many tools from lots and lots of hard work. If possible, use spacers when installing one shelf at a time. The spacers can be used to hold the next sliders up while working on them and hopefully that will be less stress on your back. We would love to hear how things work out.

I'm retired but this is definitely a project well worth ensuing. Think economy (cheapest way), salvaged second hand timber and go from there. Less waste to landfills should be first tasks, then 'what else can this be used / re purpose for?.

We sincerely thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. We try to learn and adjust from suggestions when we can. Please note, the channel name is just a name. Much like Poor Boy restaurants who have tons of stores and probably have far better tools than us. Our channel is not an actual how to. We often try to point out, we simply hope to inspire people to do things for themselves so we rarely show measurements. For you.... measure the distance between sides and subtract 1" if the drawer slides you obtain are 1/2" thick. If your cabinet doors do not fully open beyond the sides, you will need to measure how far they the doors protrude and add spacers between the drawer slides and the sides. Sorry if that is clear as mud. If you require clarification let me know and I will work to provide a better description.

We too started the same. If you check our earliest videos we did not have much. Our channel name is more of a concept. When something requires a major repair, like a ceiling collapse from water leak, we were quoted $5000-$8000. As a poor man, the repair had to be accomplished so we invested in a nice power tool to help do the job better. The cost of the power tool and supplies was much less than paying a contractor. It was not the prettiest job, but we learned and we gained a tool to be used for other projects to come. Using this poor man method we saved lots of money and gained tools. :-) if you ever have a question, just ask and we will do our very best to provide a proper resolution. We learned from others and hope to be able to pass it forward.

We are sincerely pleased that you love the pullout drawers. I am truly sorry but I have not seen already made drawers, sold separate from the cabinets because the widths of cabinets may not be a standard size. If you were to make them yourself, the drawer slides are around $10-$15 and depending on the quality of the wood you choose, each drawer may use under $10 in wood. I hope this answers your question. please do not be discouraged by not having expensive tools. In reality, you could do this with only some glue, screws and a screw driver. In most countries, you can go to the big box store to purchase the plywood and you can have them make cuts for you. In the US, most store charge $0.50 per cut. Once the pieces are cut, it is a matter of using glue and screws. If you choose to use pocket holes which are stronger, you can get a mini pocket hole jig for around $10. Just give it a try some day. You can do it! 👍

Well, you too can spend hours fulming videos each week and even more hours editing them for posting to KZbin and after posting over 300 videos in six years, you too can make a little money to allow you to buy a tool here and there. If you own a home and inevitably need something repaired, instead of paying a contractor thousands of dollars, use a small portion of the money to purchase supplies and good tools to help complete the repairs on your own. You save money the Poor Man's way, and you gained a tool that can help you on future projects.

Yes, the wood is 1 x 3 but the lower shelves were 1 x 6 on the sides and back because we place taller items on lower shelves and do not want items to fall over when pulling the shelf out. The base of each shelf is 3/4". Thank you so very much for watching our video!

This is definitely going on my to-do list for my pantry! I do have a question, though. I noticed that you permanently installed the rails in the cabinet. Do you think that using the existing shelf adjustment holes would be viable to let you have draw-shelves that can be readjusted to different vertical spacing as needed?

Thank you for the brilliant question. My first gut reaction was to say it wont work because you need to screw the drawer pull outs to the cabinets sides to securely hold them in place. I guess, if you cut the drawers to the perfect width, there will be enough sideward pressure to hold the slides up simply by using dowels to hold the rails in the adjustable peg holes. My only concern is, if you pull the drawer out too far, you lose the sideward pressure and the slides could fall out from the peg holes. If you try this, I would love to know how things work out.

How did you keep the drawers from tipping forward when pulled out?

We use heavy drawer pulls that can handle up to 100lbs of weight. We also used as many screws as we could to hold the drawer pulls in place. Between the two, the drawers will not tip... unless you load it with more than 100lbs :-) Thank you for the great question!

I used 3/4 on all sides and the bottom as well because some drawers will have lots of heavy canned foods, bottles or even large bags of rice.

You are spot on. Measure the width and subtract the thickness of the drawer slides (rails). Critical point. If you cabinet doors are made in a manner where they dont fully open to the width of the cabinet itself, you will need to add a strip of wood where the draw slides will be installed or your cabinet drawers will not pull open and will be blocked by the cabinet doors. I sincerely apologize for the delayed response. My wife and I are recovering from COVID. The cost can vary dramatically depending on the materials you use. I believe I made the shelves with a single Sheet of plywood. It might have been a little more than a sheet. The type of plywood I chose used to be around $50 but the cost has recently hone up and is closer to $100. Paint will cost around $30 so the only other major cost is the drawer pulls. They normally cost around $20 per pair if I purchase locally but I believe you can buy in bulk for around $10-$15 per pair.

Great question. There are a couple reasons why we did not use the original drawer. First, the original shelf was made from laminated particle board (also called Melamine) It is a good product but I find that using screws, often makes the particle board fail quick so it wont last as long as plywood. Second, When pulling out the drawers, items will fall out unless I built sides. This means I would have to buy Melamine to make the sides or it would not match the bottom. So.... we decided to do the whole thing in plywood. I hope this answers your question.

Do not be discouraged. there are different ways to go about projects. You can go to local garage sales and pick up inexpensive basic tools. Another option is that most big box stores actually rent tools. Another way to look at buying tools is to see what a contractor wants to charge you to do a project. If they want $1000, then spending $100 for a power tool is still much less expensive and then you can use that tool for future projects. Dont forget to see if friends or family have tools that you can borrow. There are definitely ways that you will be able to accomplish so much on your own. We know you will be able to accomplish so much and would love to hear back from you .

Ms Patricia, if you purchased drawer pulls, they usually come with screws that are about 1/4". I assume it is possible that your pantry walls are made of 1/2" wood so it will work for you. We wish you good luck if you decide to attempt something like we have.

I get that a lot. I too did not have a ton of tools. If I had major project needed to be completed, such as repairing a collapsed ceiling, I was quoted at $8,000. Instead of paying a contractor, I studied on doing the repair and purchased tools I need to complete the task. It was much less than paying contractor and when finished, I had tools that could be used for other things. There were many projects we did because we wanted to upgrade rooms but applied the same principle. Contractors quoted huge amounts. We bought tools instead. 😀

Neha, Please keep in mind, Poor Man's DIY is a name. If you search Google for "Poor Man", you will find many large companies who use it as part of the name. I did not mean to offend anyone. If you do not have a large selection of tools this still can be done. Most big box stores where you buy the wood can cut the wood for you. In the US, they usually only charge about $0.25 per cut, so it will be very inexpensive. Once the wood is cut, you only need a screwdriver, screws and glue. If you want to use pocket holes for a stronger hold, there are mini pocket hole jigs that are around $10. If you want you can use a handsaw to cut wood, or pay the lumber yard to do more cuts Then all you need is a drill and sandpaper vs palm sander. The jigs used are a wise investment. Many farmers buy tools for a project and then sell them when they’re done the project. You could do that for the clamps and drilling guides if you need to get $ back.

As wood and paint was the material used it is an affordable solution. Melamine board would need a large table saw but wood can be cut with a handsaw. Just takes more sweat and accuracy of cuts will be needed

Actually, you can still probably create this even without access to a saw. First, many of the local hardware stores will make cuts for you. You can measure and draw out our plans and ask them to cut them out for you. They probably wont cut sheets of plywood small enough to make the sides but for the sides, you can purchase 1X2 in boards. They will cut them down for you. Second, if you want to get adventurous, hardware store often have rental tools. You can then give a saw a try and you might get hooked and start making more. We do wish you the very best if you decide to try this. If you have any questions or think we might be able to provide some advise or suggestions, feel free to reach out to us and we will try our best to assist.
