Nice. Where I live, every contractor wants a few thousand dollars for a simple project. As a new homeowner, I have to try to do most of those. Thank you so much for the video.

I built a set of these rails this month. They are identical to this video and they look outstanding. I really appreciate the instructions! Here are some extra tips: - Avoid the pressure treated lumber if you can. It may very likely twist or warp as it dries out. Use redwood or cedar. And of course treat it with an exterior finish when you're done. - I built the backyard rail first, learned lessons, then built the front steps. Front came out professional. Many compliments from neighbors. - The concrete steps are likely NOT level, even, or the same height. Don't cut all the posts to 36" and assume things will come out level and proportional. - Cut your first post to 36 inches. When setting the second post, mark where the top horizontal 2x4 will hit it when perfectly level. Cut the post 1" above that line. If your concrete isn't level, this will hide the error at the bottom of the railing. - Before tightening the brackets securely to the concrete anchors, loosen the nuts and use the short/straight edge of a long 2x4 to wiggle your post until they are both perfectly aligned to each other. Lock down the brackets, then you can install the bottom/top cross beams. - It was much easier to get the top cross-beam "L" 2x4s flush by installing the horizontal piece first, then installing the vertical piece to it. - Rebar rusts very badly. My home depot keeps the 10 ft sticks outdoors and they are basically orange and filthy. Paint them black before installing them -- the first coat should be a rust reformer. Then additional coats of high gloss paint for durability. - If you've never used a hammer drill, buy a cheap (under $100) rotary hammer instead. More features and easier to get this project done. - I had several concrete anchors fail to catch. Pulling them out is HARD. Drilling well below 4" depth and making sure all the dust/material is removed from the holes was the trick for me. - You can always hammer the anchors down further. But it's almost impossible to back them out. - Use a few spare "junk" nuts when hammering the anchors down so you don't damage the real nuts. - Get 50 or so washers that fit over the sleeve of the concrete anchors that you can use for shimming. The washers that come with the anchors for example cannot be used as shims. - Get some very thin washers (1/16") in case required shimming hides too much of the threads for the washers that come with the anchors. - If you mess up an anchor and it can't be removed, then you can place a new anchor as close as possible to it, then elongate the bracket hole with a drill or dremel. Not ideal. Even after this project, I'm really not good at toenailing 3" wood screws.

Thank you for the great detail on this....I ditto the person who must DIY due to very tight budgets...this video is a blessing! Thank you~~ Quick question...does the rebar cause any rust spots over time? Should we seal them before installing?
@D.I.Y._All-in-One3 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Yes it will rust over time if you don't seal it with a paint of some sort. However with mine I did not paint the rebar because I wanted it to just naturally rust over time to give it a more rustic look

Just curious, is the rebar in tight enough to hold if a kid decides to climb on them? We have grandchildren and even though kids are not suppose to do things, well things happen. I appreciate it.

any tips on why I keep ruining threads when I bang in anchor?
@D.I.Y._All-in-One2 жыл бұрын
Make sure to have a nut on the end of the anchor 1st before hitting it with hammer. 2 nuts could be used as well. In most situations it should not take very much force to tap the anchor down, make sure the hole is drilled deep enough, and you can also blow the drill dust out with an air compressor. And maybe try a different brand of anchors, maybe the metal is just too soft/weak.

What’s the size of the hammer drill ? To make the hole
@D.I.Y._All-in-One4 жыл бұрын
If your using a wired hammer drill I would recommend at least a 6 amp or higher rated drill. If you are using a wireless hammer drill i would use a 20 V or higher drill.

What size bit did you use for drilling holes in the concrete?

It depends what size anchors you're using. I had 3/8" anchors so I used a 3/8 " bit.
