We very well might be officially crazy bird people.... A month or so ago we bought 2 little ducklings and 3 more chicks to add to our flock. We have 35 acres for them to roam but, to keep living quarters from being too cramped we decided to build a separate duck house. Ingrid got to breaking down pallets and started assembling our frame. We did vertical pallet siding trimmed with strips of underlayment. We framed the door with 2x2’s and did an OSB panel topped with the pallet and underlayment slats like the house siding. We were able to repurpose a metal frame something got shipped in into a little duck run. A black tub made for the perfect little pond that our ducks splash and clean in. We bought a sheet of green metal roofing to match the chicken coop we built a couple months ago. It was a quick, cheap build make of mostly recycled materials.

It‘s beautiful. Great job. I didn‘t see any ventilation though which helps release the ammonia and keeps them drier in winter. I am not sure how harsh your winters are, and you may already know this, but ducks put off so much moisture that it can freeze without fresh drier air. Cross ventilation at the top covered by 1/4x1/4 hardware cloth to keep out the predators will help deter any respiratory issues.

All great points, thank you for your encouragement and wisdom! We love getting feedback from our viewers. To put your mind at ease: There is one completely open door way on the front of the duck house (that opens to their covered run area, and then there is a crack all around the edge of the back door that locks to keep predators out but allows for ventilation. They free range all day and the door is left open for cross breeze and that way everything can air/dry out if need be. We live in Southern Colorado in a very dry desert scape, so not a lot of moisture unfortunately and fortunately I guess🤪.

Why don't the chickens run away into the desert?

You keep them cooped up for a few days giving them plenty of water, food, and shade. Then they know to return there to roost every evening. Every evening as the sun drops behind the mountains we go down and they’re all back in the coop all ready for us to shut them in for the night!
