Shyro Channing cost about $600. In this build there is no power switch. You plug in the battery to the vesc to power it on. It accelerates and decelerates with the controller.

I've been all over the internet, looking at prebuilt, diy, and tons of other electric skateboards. This one seems to be the best bang for my buck. The charge times and inconvenience of the batteries are totally worth the speed, range, and price. I'm amazed you were able to do this with little/no skateboard building experience before.. 2 13000mah 3s lipos in series, 2 6s car escs (solid braking and very reliable), GT2B hobby controller, 90mm wheels. The dual Carvon hubs are total tanks- I ride them in the pouring rain and rough pavement here in the UK (uni) and nothing stops them. I'm hitting 50kph on 6s- If I were to upgrade to vescs and 12s, I could easily cross 80kph. Making a project like this is totally doable- I purchased most of my parts off eBay, and got the Carvons used on www.electric-skateboard.builders. It's great to see people like Mike getting the word out on how to make these things!

The only issue I've had with my board was in the first week when the escs overheated (when they overheat, the failsafe kicks in and applies full brake- not fun when you're on the board). The failsafe can be disabled with a firmware update, but just ensure there's adequate airflow and you'll be fine. ah, alright. How much was it in total? How does it handle going up a curb? Does the bottom rub?

+Grant Becker In total it was about $650 but you can make one for much cheaper if you select cheaper parts. The large 83mm wheels handle the edges of sidewalks like a pro. And the bottom has plenty of clearance. Just have to watch out for some speed humps in parking lots sometimes 👍🏻

Great board I built one that has a top speed of 45mph, but I've limited that using my vesc because it's a bit too fast, I like how you say it's better than a boosted, but it's hard to compare a diy with a boosted because a diy will always beat a boosted in speed and range, but the build quality of a boosted is stunning and it comes with an app and the startup is very smooth

Isaiah Schlegel I actually only bought one motor, the turnigy sk3 245kv, its great for budget boards yet it's got an enormous amount of power, using this motor with an untamed esc is like a boosted board on steroids, it will throw you of fairly easily, it hasn't been hot yet I've ridden up and down hills at high speeds and it's only been warm, the only damage on the motor is a few scratches from rocks I really recommend it to any diy skateboard builder

Couple things 1. You can get a v2 shipped in 3-5 days now. 2. I weigh 150lbs and can only get about 3.5 to 4 mph at 22mph. I can get 7 miles on Eco Mode at 16 mph. 3. 0-100% charge on my v2 is about an hour. So nice build man, that's pretty cool. What batteries are you using in it? I've considered making an 18650 custom board, or using 26650s like the boosted has.

Alex Phoenix i've built my own board using 18650 batteries. I'm using a bms to handle the charging of the batteries. I chose 18650 over LiPo cause I wanted it to be as close to commercial boards (simple and easy charging, more slick design etc.), however I I think that it might've been a mistake to do it with 18650 - for me at least. Currently I have a 10S4P battery on my longboard - and it's a god damn pain to get it right. The cells tend to lose capacity too quick - and they can only discharge at around 4-8C, whereas LiPo can at a rate of 20-40C. Charging a LiPo is more difficult, but I should've invested in them instead of 18650. (My 18650's are not the highest standard, but a high end 18650 is simply too expensive with 40 of them) Just a subjective opinion :-)

That's interesting. I get panasonic 18650s for free from my work. They come out of our dead drill batteries. Usually get 1 good cell out of every 10 cells or so. But I've heard that bout 18650s, which I think is why boosted opted for the 26650. I'll look into some LiPo stuff, haven't really looked into that yet.

Nice job on the DIY board, Mike. Years from now, in hindsight you'll see how far that sort of self-determination and confidence transferred far beyond researching, developing, and building this hybrid "toy / semi-sane mode of transportation". (I'm not trying to be condescending at all. I'm a 40-something senior engineer, who was fortunate enough to obtain a great college education while self-teaching myself all sorts of odd mechanical design/repair/welding/electrical/automotive/etc skills. All of these skills and passions interweave and tend to apply to broader [e.g., leadership] life skills in general.. OK, I'll get off my soap box now). *Minor correction to your post though* : Ordering and receiving a new Boosted board is not a long painful process (other than the wait for the extended battery). I ordered a Boosted Dual V2+ last Wednesday evening (5-17), and it shipped the next morning from Mountain View, California. If I were lucky enough to live in Cali, I would have had it within one or two days from ordering - which is amazingly fast. Sadly, I live in Raleigh, NC - so I've been watching it creep across the country and is scheduled to arrive on the 24th - only 6 days from order time. ....They claim the extended battery will ship 4Q17. Time will tell if they finally live up to their word on that. The limited battery range of the standard battery is *by far* the Achilles heel of the Boosted board, and is hurting their sales by the second, I suspect.

you should consider getting a parallel charging board for your batteries, basically it makes your charger see all the cells as one and charges them all in 40 mins ish. I use lipos all the time on drones and thats what I did

+Elijah Edejer Once you buy a deck throw some trucks and wheels on it and get used to your deck/truck set up and just push it around for a little bit. Get used to it before you put a motor behind it. It will help the learning process a lot 👍🏻

What battery setup do you have to get 10 miles?? I have a 6S1P Lipo setup. It goes 25 mph but only gets 7 miles. Are you doing 8, 9 or 12S? Asking because my buddy is doing a build soon and was thinking about a 12S system.

Nice build! Great to see DIY. If you're going over 20 you should def think about wearing a helmet, it'll also help give you the confidence to go faster (I go 30 on mine with a full face helmet, slide gloves, and motorcycle jacket)

hey man, could you talk to me about board flex? is it better for a boosted board for it to be able to flex more or be stiffer? if it's more flexible, I believe it will be more comfortable to ride for a long distance, but couldn't the flex of the board mess up/bend the connections and components screwed to the botttom? also, would speed bumps be a problem, since by going over them we may hit the components to the ground and damage them? thanks in advance!

The stiffness or the flexibility of a board is completely up to the rider. I wouldn’t say one is Better than the other. I personally like a stiffer board because it seems more steady at higher speeds. But the flexible boards take the vibrations from the road down. So it’s just personal preference. Speed bumps can be a problem depending on how large the speed bump is and how much clearance you have.

i've made an electric skateboard that uses a 6s battery but i am going to upgrade to a 9s battery. I was wondering what VESC setting you used for your 9s battery board?

You can probably get those batteries charged a lot faster depending on what charger you have. Look into parallel charging. I'm guessing you have a cheap charger that's limited on power, but by parallel charging you essentially turn the three batteries into one big battery. By doing that, you only have to wait through one balance cycle ( ever notice towards the end of the charge it takes a long time to get that last little bit into the batter?) instead of three. That will save time. Good job on the board.

I currently have a Verreal V1S and a Blitzart Hurracane dual motor.Both decent budget boards that have served me well but I would like to convert one of them to belt drive because I would like to run the rough stuff wheels. What kit could I buy that would work with one of those boards batteries and esc? Thanks

You did it! Isn't it such a great feeling of accomplishment yet with a small topping of frustration 😂 What I mean by that is it's so fun and so rewarding because you didn't spend boosted board prices and it's faster. Yet, it's like a hot rod and not a toyota camry....you are constantly tuning and making sure all the check marks are checked before riding. hello i have a broblem i make a homemade electric skateboard i bought a fvt esc 120A when i was connected the old 18650 battery (old battery ) the motor running but a few minute (old battery ) i bought a new 16850 2800mah samsung but when i was connected the fvt esc show-off maybe the new battery the A its to high but i dont no please help me thanks

As somebody know doesn't know a lot about the parts that go into making an electric skateboard, as in the motors, etc., I'm curious, if you were willing to make cuts into the top speed and distance traveled how low do you think you could get the price of the board before it because almost useless due to slow speeds, short ride times, etc.

+Nicholas Catalanotto Well making cuts in price won't effect the top speed and range too much. What happens is you will end up buying worse quality parts and they will end up burning out or breaking faster. For example, I have 3 batteries in series. If I take out 1, my top speed will got from like 27mph to about 18mph. And that will only save you a $25 battery, but greatly sacrifices the top speed

Im Marcel from Brasil, I started looking for boosted boards also for my campus and etc and bro, Im so lucky I found you, I just finished watching this video and Im going to check if you teach us how to build our own boosted boards, if so, Im gonna be really happy, bc as you may know things here in Brasil are really really expensive, an original boosted board would cost something lilke 8k R$ which is 10x the minimum wage...
