My favourite holster is the cavalry holster, or something referred too as the reverse draw holster. The huge difference between a cavalry holster and the iconic normal western holster is the gun position. With a cavalry, the revolver is faced backwards with its butt faced forwards. To draw the gun, you had to twist your wrist to grab the grip, and twirl your wrist back around while taking the gun out so you can take aim. Although it sounds more impractical, with alot of practise you could draw the gun just as fast or faster than with a normal revolver. It was used commonly by soldiers in the civil war. And while you wont find many gunslingers in the wild west sporting such holsters, some did use them. Including the famous Wild Bill Hickok. Its a shame the holster isnt commonly shown in movies, im guessing because the draw technique for cavalry seems more complex for actors. Still, its my favourite holster out of them all

Another good one Santee-in a future piece could you show how the holster is shaped to the gun? I had no idea how it was done many years ago until a friend showed me the process and I couldn't believe I hadn't though of it myself.He wrapped the gun in plastic so that it was protected from water,soaked the holster in water until pliable,then put the gun into it and moulded the leather to the gun.When the leather dries out it retains the shape and fits snugly.Was this the way they always did it or a modern take on it?

My Xs great uncke was a Parker Marshal in Ark. Her dad had 2 36 Navy pistols. One with a paper thin sheath with no belt loop. He took these guns to a gunsmith. one was found to be in great condition with all numbers on parts being the same. He surmised that this gun went through the war, then when the owner came home, he put it up. The other had had parts changes and had much wear. This one he assumed went with the sheath.

There was that Paladin episode where his sadistic 'benefactor' trapped him in a hole and had him modify his cavalry holster - _cutting the flap off, cutting in a throat recurve, water stiffening and larding it, etc._ - just so he could unholster his sidearm fast enough to do him in.

Hey Santee! I noticed in the new video game Red Dead Redemption they have your character wear a hip holster on the right hip and a cross draw holster with the barrel pointing to the left. If you had to draw both quickly at the same time how would you do that effectively? Was the cross draw holster more more being on horseback or just a style?

Hey Santee, those are some awesome holsters. Do like the ‘Hand of God’ one. My new ones based on one used by Jesse James but it’s black. I never knew Hardin had sewn in ‘holsters’ in his coat! Thank you for these. A photo of my great great grandfather shows a walker (or army colt) sitting in his waistband. Scary choice of placement! xD How common was it to find people competing over who was quickest on the draw? I wonder if QuickDraw is a cool Hollywood idea rather than a cool historical fact. I’ve been watching ‘Godless’ recently and that Deputy, Whitey, he’s always twirling his guns and saying how quick he is. Reminds me of Tombstone with Johnny Ringo & Doc..that infamous cup scene. I think being able to draw quick is great..IF you have the eye and experience to hit the target immediately. Then again a wrong man can be a dead man pretty quick too.

I have a pretty narrow interest (currently) in who I might want to portray in that period. That is a a mixedblood Native American lawman (what I am today) just after the Civil War up until about 1875. The cool thing is Civil War stuff was common during that period, as most lawmen were veterans or children or siblings of veterans and a lot of that surplus equipment was available and cheap. Indians had lost everything after the Removal Act and we had even less money and resources than white Southerners. I eventually would like to have a western Indian Police impression and maybe a Reconstruction era South Carolina deputy sheriff impression. Both would be about the same equipment. I modified Civil War era holsters for this impression. I just cut them folded the flap under and used rawhide straps (paleo kydex) wrapped around the holster to provide tension. It has good retention and the draw could accommodate someone way faster than me. That fast draw stuff is movie nonsense anyway, and I'm only interested in history and this is why I will never do CAS. I'm too much of a stitch Nazi.

Good plan on the holster with the wraparound flap. Very common right after the war. The fast draw holsters of today are fallacy, but there was a speedy draw back then. Had to be.

From those Tucson courthouse photos......it looked like old Bill was a fan of the US army flap style holster for his 7 1/2" colt saa's
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 6 жыл бұрын
Interesting you should catch that! There is some conjecture as to whether he was in the Army prior to being a bandit.He could have acquired that holster as part of his outlaw look, too.

Santee....there is an old article in trueWest magazine about stagecoach passengers eyewitness testimony on the unique way bill would hold his remington rifle with the colt saa in his left hand pressed up along side it ....in case you have never seen this.

This got me thinking about what a ghost’s holster might be made out of. If the ghost’s gun is drawn from his holster, does it make a sound? 🤠

Curious Santee, on the conversions & holsters, namely the 1858's, how did they carry those little 38 RF/CF-the cartridge loops are bigger than the cartridges? Belt pouch?

As long as there have been holsters. Typically people would carry one revolver, but exceptions like Bill Hickok were around.

Loved this, and your go to holster is really nice, im going to check out the website after i type this. I have a question, did the old west follow the constitution of the united states or since the area was a territory and not an official state they had their own laws?? I ask cause if they had the constitution the tombstone anti gun law would have been unconstitutional
@ArizonaGhostriders
@ArizonaGhostriders 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was unconstitutional, but I believe most territories had their own governing bodies and could enact laws dependent on the type or amount of criminal activity.

Not EXACTLY "old west". I made a buscadero rig for a Nerf blaster, complete with "bullets" made from wooden dowels and painted to look like real cartridges. Did it up for a Steampunk convention. Wish I could post a photo; it looks really good! Also made gunbelts and holsters for prop 1860 Colt Army, and sawed -off shotgun like James Caan carried in "El Dorado"(which ALSO had fake "shells" made for it). Probably Hollywood more than historical
@ArizonaGhostriders

Yeah, but still really cool and I bet the sawed-off shotgun one was terrific!

It was only my second gunbelt build. I had trouble getting the belt right, and the holster required a lot of wet pre-shaping before it could be sewn up. I made it with a full skirt, held to the holster with a strap and buckle, and passed through a slit in the belt rather than looping it over. It's supposed to be a "fast draw" type, but trying to do that with a barrel 12 inches long kind of slows it down a might. The "shells" are 1/2 inch wooden dowels, which actually fit into the breech of the gun, with steel washers glued to the backs, so that they didn't slip into the barrels. The rest of the look was achieved with painting. A small error; having not seen a real shotgun shell in person(so to speak), I made them about an inch too short. That didn't, however, stop me from being questioned about whether they were real or not! The gun itself I modified from a Denix "coach gun", i.e. a full length shotgun. I shortened the stock and the barrels as much as I dared, and did some shaping and refinishing on the stock. After making that, I acquired a Denix 1860 Army(I live in New Jersey, so no FIRING guns), and made a rig for that. I made it to suit ME, rather than historical accuracy, hence no "slim jim" design. Another buscadero, with the same strap and buckle. No tooling, nothing fancy, just a plain working holster
