When you join a new skein, instead of cutting off the tails, weave them into your blanket. This way, if your knot loosens (which it likely will if you're using a chenille yarn like the one pictured,) your whole blanket won't unravel. (Source: 20+ years of fiber arts.)

Just wanted to say thank you for this. I work construction and have no knowledge of these sort of things. I'll admit I had to watch the video several times to get the starting and stopping bit down but I was able to make a blanket that is about queen sized for my aunt in a couple of days. Just wrapped it up actually. She used to have a loom when we were kids and made blankets and stuff for us, but she was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's and is having trouble remembering a lot of things so I wanted to pay her back. Anyway the video helped a lot.

Hoping your Aunt likes the Queen blanket you made for her. With your Aunt having Alzheimers I would of picked her brain 5-10 yrs ago for lots of information on the things that she did & things she made if only for family or to include in your family genealogy. (I've been doing my family's since before 1980 & have lots of information that will go thru the family. Photo's , traditions, hobbys!& much more.) That way the things she did, the information would still be in your family for generations.

The blankets that are stupidly expensive are made of a completely different material (wool roving). It pills terribly with frequent use and is not machine washable, so not ideal if you have kids and want to snuggle with them under a chunky blanket. This is a much better option, and way less expensive. Great idea!
@jamieher22176 жыл бұрын
Angela Kewin it's not stupidly expensive when you're using 100% real wool like merino wool. All wool pills, but the pilling makes it look even more vintage farmlike. (The trend most people are going for these days.) Merino wool or other real roving wool have heat insulation benefits that these cheap blankets cannot provide. And these are little knits compared to what real chunky knits look like. If you're going to spend hundreds on a blanket, just take good care of it. And yes, you can actually wash certain wool in a machine.
@angelakewin79876 жыл бұрын
@@jamieher2217 I'm very well aware of the pros and cons of using wool roving for textiles such as this. If I am going to fork over $140ish for a THROW blanket it needs to be durable and relatively easy to "take care of" as you say. That's the whole point of this video.
@jamieher22176 жыл бұрын
Angela Kewin I have a wool blanket and my kids uses it. My pet loves it. So I'm not sure why one would be deem them not durable. It has felted up nicely over the years and I still have it lying around. Probably many people received synthetic wool over the real kind and it fell apart. That's why people are so against roving wool.

Recently continued working on a blanket I started a few years ago and found that, depending on the size of the blanket, it may be better to make the loops really tight. My first blanket I made with looser loops, but the yarn was so heavy that lifting the blanket on one side (like to cover yourself) pulled the blanket apart. For tighter loops, using a crochet hook is very helpful, especially if you have short nails. I use Yarn Bee “Eternal Bliss” yarn which recommends a 25mm hook, but I found that a deep, 10mm hook works just fine. My first blanket and current project are both king-size, and the crochet hook I use is the Yarnology aluminum crochet hook with a bamboo handle

Thank-you! This looks so doable. I just started doing a chunky knit blanket (my first!) with giant knitting needles, but am limited of course to the number of stitches I can fit on the needles and have not yet learned how to use circular needles, so I definitely plan to try this next! I love that you can make it any size.

Great idea to do with kids. They can help make their very own blanket. It teaches them a useful craft and also lets them learn to make it themselves. Teach them how to avoid becoming "consumer" and be a "creator" instead.💚💚

Thanks for this! Great video and I really appreciate your enthusiasm. :) You made this so easy! After watching your video I went out and bought 10 rolls of yarn as I wanted to make a big blanket. I did 29 rows across, and it worked out so well! Only used 8.5 rolls in the end. I even worked in a second color. My finished project ended up spreading the width and length of a queen size mattress (with no overhang). My holes were a bit too large so I did your finishing method all around and it really helped to make the blanket a bit more sturdy. Can’t thank you enough! Happy Holidays!

Clara, I'm left handed as well. I almost drove a lady crazy as she was trying to teach me to crochet. Everything that I tried would come out backwards. I gave up on crocheting but I have made two hand crocheted throws and it was REALLY easy.

EASY ANSWER! I'm a lefty, too. Instead of sitting beside the crochet teacher, sit across. If they lay the work on a table so u can see it, you'll pick up on it easily......I've taught over a dozen right-handers to crochet.
