I've had more than 4, and personally, I leave them in for more than a year. Although I do use more intricate patterns (Chinese ladder, etc). After you leave it in for a while (over a year) (depending on how fast your hair grows) It will develop a dreadlock type knot at your scalp, and it usually takes me over an hour (conditioner is a lifesaver). Just a little advice for first-timers.

Over the years I've had it many different colours. I also have naturally dark hair and found the colours stand out more than with lighter hair (dyed my hair blonde recently). I currently have light blue, turquoise and silver. Also tried, pink, blue and gold, and pink, blue and purple. I guess I personally like the pink and blues.
