I built one myself, 50 feet of copper, joints soldered. It’s important to understand WHY you need this: the compressed air gets very hot and thus VAPORIZES water, which means it can’t be drained out and can easily overwhelm hobbyist-level filters. The pipes cool the air down to the point where the water condensates, so you can then collect and drain it out of the drops before your filters, and then your filters can handle whatever is left.

Yes. 100% correct

When air is compressed, the heat is also compressed. If 147 psi is 10 bar, the heat that was in 10 cubic feet of air is now contained in 1 cubic foot of air. When that heat is removed, the moisture holding capacity of the air drops and moisture condenses. Drain off the moisture from the compressed, cooled air and you now have some very dry air. Problem is, when that compressed air is decompressed, it gets very cold.

not sure how much does 50 feet of copper costs, but here in Croatia you can get broken AC units for free or really cheap, and use the heat exchanger for the purpose of cooling the air, needs much less room and is cheaper. Oh and it can hold high pressures.

@@PCMenten Maybe it was unintentional in your writing but to clarify - removing condensed water in compressed air does not cause a colder air temperature than it would become after released with the water still inside. Kind regards Anders

I stumbled upon a solution to the moisture problem when an old Fliteway compressor with a vertical tank I bought at an auction crapped out so I went to TSC and bought an Ingersoll Rand SS5L5 60 gallon compressor and installed a few different filters/water separators/desiccant dryers but they weren’t that great so on a whim I attached an old flexible corrugated natural gas line to the IR SS5L5 to my old red Fliteway tank and then attached the desiccant dryer and filter. Somehow that cured the moisture issue and I didn’t have to replace the desiccant very often either. Now that setup was basically outside in moisture laden Michigan, under a rather leaky overhang but worked great for a couple years until the flex line developed a small leak so I’m looking for another option. Maybe a stainless steel corrugated water heater connector since the PSI doubles to 250 PSI. I open the ball valve daily to drain but recently I noticed the release was less forceful so clearly there was an obstruction that could only mean rust. The 2008 date on the tank tells me it’s overdue for some maintenance so I disconnected the 220v wires and discovered the ground must’ve vibrated loose. I’ll have to use a threadlock upon reassembly. Next I removed the heavy cast iron pulley to help get a better grip on that heavy cast iron pump beast, then removed the motor, and the nuts from the concrete anchors holding it down. After removing the brass angle connector from the drain I discovered the brass pipe was partially blocking the connector so I’ll have to find another solution for that but in the meantime I power washed the inside as good as I could considering I had to shoot it through where a half inch pipe was attached. Then I screwed in a pipe plug in the bottom, poured in a $5 box of super washing soda, filled the tank with water, placed a plastic plug into the top that I drilled a hole into so my anode rod fashioned out of the metal from an old political yard sign would be insulated from touching the tank so I could attach an old 6 amp battery charger for the old rust removal by electrolysis trick. 24 hours later I had to rinse the tank many times to clean and then I sealed again to pour in 3 gallons of Evaporust ($22 each at Menards) Every so often I’ll turn the tank upside down and roll it around so everything is coated. It hasn’t been 24 hours yet but I plan on recovering the Evaporust to reuse elsewhere and then after the tank dries, I’m considering spraying in some fogging oil. I suspect the vapors will settle so it shouldn’t be long before the concern of oil disbursement assuages. I considered Fluid Film but I’m not sure I could get complete coverage considering I have to spray through an opening smaller than the diameter of my finger. Any thoughts?

A big thing people need to consider is that it’s a lot easier to run their system left to right rather than right to left. I have this same kit and it took a lot more planning because of the location of my compressor. 90% of the filter systems out there are non reversible and have ports that are designed for a left side inlet and right side outlet.

Great video thanks. Could you consider a video talking about CFM as in my short experience where newbies like me buy an HVLP and then LVLP gun it seems to be all about right PSI and CFM together. I ended up changing out the standard hose for a 10mm and appropriate high flow fittings. My next plan is to change the regulator at the compressor as at 1/4" BSP I think it is restricting CFM as each part of the system can also reduce CFM and this is at the very beginning..

Thats an interesting drying loop setup. id add a clear water separator before the eastwood cfs. it should always be dry if your system is working properly. I used the drying loop setup from tptools. I never get any moisture in the water separator, i also use their coslescing filter. my piping to the loop is 1/2 iron, but i could easily use pex to the metal loop. Id also use disiccant in eastwoods cfs filter as an extra step when painting.

How timely Brian you posted up this instal and must say i am very impressed with your garage reno ( i have been following you for like 3yrs now as i own 3 x classic cars and are DIY in every aspect). I live in Perth, Western Australia I just last week built a very similar wall cooling system but in 1" copper pipe and a 3 stage filtration set-up. My 100ltr compressor is not in my double garage but in an adjoining storage shed so the pipe feeds through the wall and it will keep the compressor noise down dramatically I also ordered a "Derale 15800 Electra-Cool Cooler Assembly" (transmission cooler) from JEGS in US which i am going to plumb in between the compressor and tank as i have seen this unit is very popular for cooling compressor air before it gets to the tank I also scored a couple of stainless steel 100ltr tanks rated to 500psi which i want to plumb in next to the compressor so i have 300ltrs of compressed air to cut down compressor run time. Out of curiosity how much air storage does a pro booth at your work hold? I have to build a home DIY air extraction system for my double garage next and will be very keen for you to reveal what system you will be DIY building & installing. My garage is much like yours but double not triple and when my door is down (tilt style door) i went to the trouble with foam stripping added to make sure it seals (I just ordered 4 x commercial wall mount metal extractor fans that will pull a total of 11,500 m3/h but iam not sure if that is going to be enough. I will be building a wooden plenum box for the fans and was thinking "positive pressure" would be best for home garage to keep dust & bugs out with filtered air coming into the fans

Appreciate this professionally instructed video. I can get important visuals into my old paint damaged brain before I start by seeing the finished system and step by step process. I took to heart using all of the additional parts you suggested. I have OCD. Seeing you completely using very neat methods and practicing in using correct measurements. You also started with a clean and well lit work area for assembly and measurements. (As always) My OCD nature asked myself: Would I use a small clear collection type of device to collect the excess moisture let off by the ball valves at the end of the runs? Again, thanks so much! I will be building the system you showed.

Putting a condenser from a car air conditioner between the pump and tank helps cool the air going into the tank . Make sure you put the condenser in front of the pump fan if it has one or install an electric fan in front of the condenser so cool air can be pulled through the condenser. It has cut way down on draining my tank regularly. Now it's every few days vs every day.
@jimjames3938

Eddie you need to delete the last two sentences of your post. The condenser setup that you're speaking of will leave more water in the tank not less, which is not a bad thing because that means that the air leaving the tank is somewhat dryer. Take a minute to think about what's actually going on here and you will understand, unless you've acquired one of those magical condensers that has the ability to make water just disappear. If so, sorry my bad.

What is your recommendation on turbine based? I don't have trust in turbine because I own a continous duty compressor with decent cfm. I am just afraid that turbines are very expensive and also generate a lot of heat when trigger is not pressed and the turbine is running continously. That can burn up motor and the motors are also high rpm.

I cant seem to find anyone ecomically DIY tackling booth atmospheric humidity (RH%). I live in a very rainy area and as soon as that meter exceeds 70%, I tend to get blushings. Only solutions I have found yet to process a booth worth of air flow at 0,5-0,7m/s , is fun fare size incandescent wheels or rather expensive and power hungry professional HVAC solutions. Someone mentioned use of UV lamps on the booth intake, but I have´nt found illustrations. Is there simpler and more economical ways to go about it?

Loving the channel. Could you please answer one question for me. On my compressor I’ve got a Air displacement cfm rating and a Free air delivered (FAD) cfm rating. Which one is the important one for calculating which gun will work with my setup?

What are your thoughts on those turbine HVLP paint systems that warm the air and spray at even lower hvlp pressure? I know lots of furniture refinishers that use them and love them but never met anyone shooting cars using them. Curious if you or anyone here has. This is like the opposite concept of wanting cooler dry air versus warmer air,

I painted 6 cars (collisions so it was 2/3 panels) with a Fuji mini mite 5 Turbine system. There was minimal overspray, but the warm air didn’t give an acceptable finish by my standards even when using the smallest cap and needle set (0.8). Since I already had an 80 gal air compressor I sold the Fuji and got the 3m performance gun which gives fantastic results. You could get extra hose for the Fuji and have that go through cold water to cool the air, which is practical and would help. If you don’t have a suitable compressor to spray I’d say give a Fuji a try; for ~1100 you’d be ready to spray. My 80 gal IR rand compressor was ~3000, piping $150, regulator/drier ~200, hose 200, gun 500.. Fuji is the best bang for the buck, just be prepared to tinker to dial it in

I want to begin painting an was thinking of buying a 27 gallon 200 psi air compressor from harbor freight. Im not planning on doing big jobs but I wasn’t sure what air hose to buy or the perfect spray gun for this compressor. Can you guide me to the right direction etc. Please.

I flip Harley’s that need repainted. Following some of your vids I have a question. Using a lvlp gun / small compressor what primer, paint, clear coat line do you recommend that doesn’t break the bank and is easy to work with for motorcycles?
