Today's video ties in with this week's topic on my Personal Diaries series: the difficulty of not being able to afford expensive products. The Motivational Monday prompt encourages us to create art with inexpensive or recycled materials.
Do you want to create art but can't afford expensive art mediums?. Here is a video where I show you how to create white gesso to prime surfaces for your projects. This is a DIY home made gesso using the following recipe:
Gesso Recipe:
1/4 cup of baby powder
1 tbsp of white glue
1 tbsp of white acrylic paint
water to desired consistency
mix all ingredients until desired consistency.
I hope it inspires you and prompts you to create this week. If you create anything inspired by this prompt use the #kerenscreativeprompt

Hi Keren, per your request, here is the recipe I use and the website that I found it on. 1 part Plaster of Paris, 1 part glue and 1 part hot water TO 3 parts white acrylic paint (if you want white gesso. Clear? Leave out the acrylic). For me personally, I make a pint at a time which fills my Talenti jar to the rim. So, for my use I use 1/3C Plaster of Paris, 1/3C glue (I use Elmers because that's what I have on hand at the moment) and 1/3C hot water. The hot water helps it all dissolve/blend really well. After mixing this well, I then add 1 C white acrylic. Boom! 15 min and I am done. To date, I haven't had a single issue. Hope this helps! www.outlook8studio.com/2014/01/16/homemade-gesso-primer-for-canvas-or-paper/

Thank you sooo much! I was watching one of the Finnabar Mixed Media posts and literally just ask this question two days ago! I have 3 D Matt and a Polymer medium soft gloss. I’m new to this so I’m not quite sure what is glue or for effect or both light guesso, medium guesso, heavy guesso., etc? I have collected many this and that’s bauble and beads, little flowers, metal pieces and purchased many charms, paper cut outs, alcohol paints, metallic mixatives, distress stuff ....my main question is what do you use to attach your initial fabric pieces, paper, wood anything to your page or project? Thank you so much for sharing!😊k

Kimberly I have a video dedicated to each of those topics, especially showing the Finnabair mediums. There's one called "All about gesso", then "All about gel medium" then All about modelling paste, etc. search my channel. just write Keren Tamir with one of those titles and it will explain everything. To glue things you use gel but it depends on the heaviness. Watch the "All about gel" video (two parts) to understand which gel to use. hope it helps

Hi! Thanks for this type of video! I saw one on LorrieMarie Jenkins channel for “texture paste”....she used 1 and 1/4 cup baby powder, 1/2 cup gesso and 1/4 cup ModPodge. She then took a portion of it and added colored acrylic paint to the desired hue. So in essence a base with which you can color with any desired color!! Now I wonder, in place of the “gesso” called for in her recipe, could we use YOUR recipe! Hmmmmm blending the 2 together?? I’m still trying to navigate the confusing world of pastes and gels and medium and gesso and texture-and......well, you get the idea. I’m not a “starving artist” by any means, but would like some background on backgrounds so to speak as I am pretty clueless. Thankfully “ScrapTime Videos” has mentioned they plan to do side by side comparisons and maybe create a list of these products with the desired effects they produce. I realize it is all “artist choice” and one product can produce many different effects, but for us beginners we need a place to start (and one that could be lesser in cost if possible lol). I look forward to seeing you use this on your journal!!

yes that recipe sounds good too. Cynthia I have the videos you are asking about. I have a video dedicated just for gesso called "all about gesso", then one for modeling paste "all about modeling paste" same for gel mediums (two parts), texture paste, acrylic paint, sprays, etc. Each video is very explanatory. Just search my channel for those. Write my name with the title "all about gels" and you will find it. hope it helps.

Keren Tamir that’s so funny you say that because I just watched your video “art journaling 101” which answered so many questions for me! In the video you mentioned you have other videos on these topics. The more info available to me, the better! Thanks again!

How does it feel when it's dry? I just wonder if baby powder may be too fine to give a tooth to it. You could also use powdered wall filler, which can also be used to make texture paste. TFS. Julia.

I tried making it with talc powder but my acrylic paper is a bit powdery to touch. Is it fine? Also I have heard that we can prime a used canvas to reuse it with gesso, my gesso isn’t covering the canvas as much.
@KerenTamir
@KerenTamir 2 жыл бұрын
is your talc powder made from corn starch if yes it should have worked if its actually talcum powder then maybe use corn starch, the paper should be a bit rough. and yes you can prime a used canvas with gesso but you might need a few layers.

just add acrylic paint to it now if you want. you can always add a coat on top of it again. I don't know the answer to that as I never experimented without acrylic
