It is a fun project, isn't it? 🙂 I also love how effective it is at cleaning & stain removal. I've been making this detergent for more than 10 years and still love it. In the beginning I used to stir up the gel with a yard stick. I now use a paint mixer attachment with a power drill. Way more efficient and makes the mixture more consistent.

I used this recipe on a load of 6 pair of jeans my son wore working on greasy dirty cars and trucks. They came very clean and smelled good too. There was some staining, but the jeans were years old! I've also used it for delicates. But I've never tried on baby clothes.

I have been using this recipe for about 6 months and i will never go back to store bought soap. I actually tripled the recipe and made 5 gallons of a super concentrate. I have a wide mouth gallon jug that when empty i put 2.5 cups of the concentrate in the jug and fill the rest with water then blend with my stick blender that i use when i make lye soap. I turned my friend on to this but he adds 2 cups of oxy powder to it. Not oxy detergent but the plain oxy powder. It does wonders at cleaning his work clothes. You really cant go wrong with it. I take every opportunity possible to eliminate unnecessary chemicals dyes and perfumes from my life. This recipe seems to clean better smell better is not as harsh on colors or even sensitive skin.

What a great idea to make a concentrate to dilute as you need it! Love that! I love how effective this detergent is too, much better than any commercial product I've used over the years. I use Oxy Clean as well but I don't mix it into my detergent mixture. I only add it to loads that need an extra boost like my husband's workout clothes and towels or the dog's towels. Thanks for watching and sharing! :)

I saw where someone used a immersion blender to emulsify to get that creamy texture. I had made some homemade detergent that had separated. So I equalky distributer the separated parts into 2 quart jars and used the stick blender. WORKED GREAT and doesn't look like it's going to separate at all. I use 1 or 2 heaping TB per washload in HE front load machine.
@helpfulnatural2 жыл бұрын
I use a paint mixer attachment with my power drill. It works quite well however, this mixture will still separate somewhat. I give it a quick mix whenever I use it so that I don't end up with just water at the bottom 3" of the bucket.

I made this today, first time, and it was waxy and gummy and horrible. I got the recipe from EHow. I found out how to fix it and now have the consistency of what you just showed us. My recipe before I found your channel today is 1 cup each of borax and washing soda and the entire bar of Fels with 10 cups of water to melt the soap. After soap is melted and borax and washing soda are mixed in, I then added an additional five quarts of hot water. I didn't make quite the five gallons but probably should have, It has the consistency of what you showed up and that was more valuable than anything because I was doubting what I had made. When can I transfer this to my pretty glass container for my laundry room shelf? I found your channel today looking for validation on what I had made. Should I dilute more or use as is?

I usually wait until the next day after I've mixed a fresh batch. It will have gelled to a semi-solid texture. You'll want to break up the gel and mix it as best you can to smooth it out a bit. It will still look kind of like cottage cheese rather than a silky liquid but it works very well. The main reason you want to mix up the solid is because there will be watery liquid at the bottom of the bucket. If you don't mix it, you end up with just water when you get down that far. After you've mixed it to a pourable texture, you can then pour it into the bottle for easier usage. Hope this helps. :) I'm glad my video helped...thanks for watching! :)

?? How much do you use per load of laundry (Front Loader)?? thanks for the demo!!!!

Should i use distilled water or normal water is enough for this?? And how much shelf life it will have.!? I wanted to do it as large scale ,so is it possible
@helpfulnatural5 ай бұрын
I just use tap water. I've only made 1 bucket at a time so I don't know what the shelf life would be for multiples made all at once. With that being said, my 1 bucket lasts for at least 6 months and I've never had an issue with it.

What is the shelf life of this 5 gal bucket of detergent ?
@helpfulnatural Жыл бұрын
I usually use up a 5 gal. bucket in 6-9 months. It also depends on how often you do laundry and a larger household will definitely use it up more quickly. In that time, I've never had any issues with spoilage, if that even happens with detergent. I also keep the bucket closed tightly at all times when not in use.

I love this but I constantly have to keep mixing it with a drill and a paint mixer because after a day it gets sick and clumpy and then when I mix it it is nice and smooth is there anything I can do to stop it from clumping in the bucket
@helpfulnatural2 жыл бұрын
Mine does that too. The soap wants to re-solidify. By the time I've used a 3rd of the bucket, it stops going into one big clump. It's still lumpy and needs a quick stir before scooping but it's not as bad as in the beginning. Are you using a 5 gal bucket and filling it completely? If using less water, it will clump more firmly.
@jennifercruz96682 жыл бұрын
@@helpfulnatural I am using a 5 Gal bucket. We put it in a smaller bucket but all the water pooled at the bottom so that did not work.
@helpfulnatural2 жыл бұрын
@@jennifercruz9668 Yea...gotta stir really well before transferring to another bucket. It's a little putsy but a fraction of the price of manufactured stuff and for me at least, works far better at cleaning. 🙂

HELP! What on earth am I doing wrong. I did a load of darks and put in 1/4 cup on top of the clothes (HE Machine). After the 39 minute cycle, some of the detergent remained stuck to the clothes. And some of the clothes didn't smell fresh. How do I fix this?
@helpfulnatural3 жыл бұрын
I have a top loading washer and I always add the detergent first as the water is starting to fill. It gets diluted with the water and is less likely to stick to the laundry. Is there a way to add the detergent to your HE before adding your clothes?
@ArtGardenFoodExpressions3 жыл бұрын
@@helpfulnatural Yes. I have top loader. I will try that next. Should I go longer than 39 minutes. Is that some of the problem, too?
@helpfulnatural3 жыл бұрын
@@ArtGardenFoodExpressions Is 39 minutes your wash cycle time? If you haven't dried your load yet, you could run it through a short rinse cycle or short wash cycle to remove the soap residue.
@ArtGardenFoodExpressions3 жыл бұрын
@@helpfulnatural I did another cycle and put it on longer with another round of soap. I will see how this turns out. bummer.
@helpfulnatural3 жыл бұрын
@@ArtGardenFoodExpressions Just remember to always add the detergent first while the machine is filling with water to make sure it gets mixed in. Less likely to stick to your clothes. It's a small learning curve. :-)

How much do you use per load?
@helpfulnatural8 ай бұрын
For regular loads I use 1/4 cup. For large loads of towels or bed linens I'll bump that up to 1/2 cup. You can also use it for pretreating stains. I pour some into a condiment squeeze bottle which makes it easier to use for applying to small stains. (Buy a new squeeze bottle for this as it's too difficult to know if you got all of the product out of a ketchup or mustard bottle.) They're really inexpensive and can be found at Walmart or dollar stores.

If you mean how much gets added to the shredded soap for melting, I just add enough to fill the pot 3/4 full. Then when it has melted, it gets added to the 5 gallon bucket and topped off with water to within 3 inches from the top of the bucket. Hope this helps.

@helpfulnatural3 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons I use Fels Naptha soap is due to its low suds level. Suds do not do the cleaning. Any commercially made detergent will give you suds if that's what you're looking for.
