Thank you for this video. I'm new to working with wax and I suck at it so far. I'm working with the GB 416 wax, because I'm making melts. Everything you don't want to happen has been happening. The hot throw is almost nonexistent, the tops are lumpy, it frosts horribly and it doesn't release from the clamshells without a struggle. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm adding my fragrance (10%) at about 183, stirring for 2 or 3 minutes and pouring between 135 and 165. I started pouring at 145 and I've adjusted up and down trying to find the right temp.My room temperature is always right around 72ish. I want so badly to figure this out, but man its a lot harder than I anticipated. Also I had no clue about the fragrance oil eating through things. I measured out and separated my oil into small dixie cups earlier and within just a couple minutes it was all over my counter. I was so confused, lol.

I am not happy with the appearance of the sides of my containers, i do add color. Could you please share your thoughts on this much frustrating subject?? I am using GB 444.
@StandleyHandcrafted6 жыл бұрын
I am not a fan of heating containers, I just pour at a lower temperature. The main reason people do this is to reduce wet spots (the air bubbles on the sides) in the candles once they're done. You can reduce and sometimes eliminate wet spots by pouring at the lowest possible temperature. They form from the wax shrinking or contracting when cooling. They're tough to get rid of completely and most candle makers just accept them as part of the process. For your next batch, I would pour at a lower temperature and see if that helps at all.

Great video! So you’re doing 12% fragrance with your 464? I was always kind of confused about that because each site that sells 464 says something different about fragrance load. I know candle science says 12% but others say anywhere from 7-10. I usually do 9 but I’d like to try higher for a better throw if it works well for you.

J Q I always do 12 or even 13. With soy you can get away with a little more because some will be burned off as it cools. Soy takes forever to cool so I add just a touch more to compensate.

Hi! I watched another video of yours and thought you had to add fragrance at higher temperatures (180 F) so the fragrance molecules can bond with the wax molecules. Is that not generally the case?

I know this video is old, but I've seen a lot of sources saying that you should add your FO at around 180 degrees so it can bind to all of the wax and that adding it a lower temp can cause some parts of your wax to have little to no FO and other parts to have too much. Do you still stand by the technique of adding your FO at a lower temp?
@StandleyHandcrafted2 жыл бұрын
I definitely still like the low temp method but adding your oils at higher temperatures around 180° you will definitely get easier blending for sure. You can absolutely add your oils at low temps, but it only works with soy wax and you have to be careful when adding it so that you don’t get clumps

I would recommend the parsoy wax, IGI6006 since it's so easy to work with. You will get a nice hot throw from it and get a better one when as you learn more. Soy is a great wax but can be tricky to get a stong candle in the beginning and can be frustrating when starting out. As for supplies, I would go to Candle Science and see what they have to offer. They have everything you will need as a beginner. Lone Star, Aztec, Flaming Candle, are all good options as well. I choose Candle Science because they're close to me.

Im going thru same thing. I just started making candles. Every test I have done is great but I have had 1 customers complain about the scent. I been doing it the same as you. I can't wait till my shipment of wax comes this week so I can try it this way.

Hello. Thanks for your video. I have a quick clarifying question. Do we add the fragrance to the wax based on the fragrance oil's flashpoint or do we ignore that to keep the fragrance oil from burning off as the wax cools down to the melt pour point?

Don’t pay attention to flashpoints, they mean nothing when it comes to adding oils to wax. 🙂 Add the oil just under the heating temp of the wax. Soy is around 185-180 and add oils around 180-170

Hi.. Thanks for sharing all the information. :). I would like to know wich wick should I use to make a 9oz jar candle with a blend of palm and soy wax. Could you help me?
@StandleyHandcrafted6 жыл бұрын
Jaine Zanella I haven’t used palm wax so I’m not sure which wick works best for that one but the HTP wicks work great in the soy. The HTP93 and 104 work very well in the 9oz jar.

Thank you so much! I'm also thinking in use wood wick. Probably it's going to work well too.

And I also have the option to work with a blend of parafin and soy. Can I use the same htp 104 or 93 wick?

Little confused you melted 2lb wax but when speaking about how much fragrance you mentioned how many oz's for 1lb, or was it you use so many oz's to 1lb so 2lb you double fragrance amount? Cheers Neil from Dubbo NSW Australia 😉

Yes I’m this video o give the ratio 1oz to 1lb and then I doubled it for the demo. 🙂

Hello, I have followed your instructions in regards to 464 soy wax but I’m having an issue with my wick. I use 464 wax 8-10% of FO and I heat my wax 180 and pour FO around 135 and pour it 130 into my containers. I use tins 8 oz and my diameter of the container is approximately 3 1/4 so I use CD18 wick but it’s creating a huge flame and a lot of mushrooming what wick would you recommend ? Thank you I hope I hear back from you 🥺🥺. I love your videos by the way! They’re super informal thank you so much!

Hello I was wondering, how does poring the FO at 135 work for you with HT?

Hi Stanley! If my jar has a diameter of 3.06 which wick would work (I use the same wax but i'm not sure what a size up is called on the website) thanks!
