I don't know the technical reasons but "jet drives" work better when the output nozzle is right at the waterline

What the hell is the Point Out of the water? The force is IN the water. The idea had merit the execution needs examination of a real jetdrive for understanding.

Submerge the pump deeper and add a shroud around the pump inlet screen with a forward facing inlet scoop to get some suction from the intake added to the push of the water jet. Just a thought

That's a cool idea! I'll bet with some tweaking of the nozzle, he could get a bit more speed. Maybe add another pump? Who knows? It's always fun to tinker! Great video.

These would make great thrusters for a larger homemade boat; two bow and two stern thrusters. A nice little joystick feeding the PWM would be really cool. You could have 4 seacocks for water outlets (the jets), all manually shut off for running and open for maneuvering, with 2 washing machine flow switches feeding flow to each seacock. The PWM logic could determine whether port or starboard side jets are activated by controlling the washing machine flow switch relays. You could incorporate a cutoff switch into each seacock so that the thrusters wouldn't work unless all four seacocks we're open, to protect the pump motors. The normal seacock inlet valve could be tapped to feed both bilge pumps. If it breaks somewhere remote, bilge pumps are available anywhere.

I just love the creativity but as for the cost a trolling motor setup would be a better choice.

Great idea gotta watch all of video to see if you reveal size of bilege pump

Wow, actually was very cool. Very ingenious bcuz the pump is designed 2 b in the h2o, & the exhaust is providing thrust. Can upgrade 4 bigger pumps or mount multiple pumps 4 higher thrust. Curious is how noisy it is underh2o. Is there a way measure the sound in the h2o? Thx 4 sharing on Utube.

Jet motors which this essentially is work by moving volume not lbs of thrust. So the bigger the pump the faster you go.

@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN2 жыл бұрын
He said at 5:14 when completely submerged he was getting 1.3 mph compared to 2.2 mph half submerged. The pump was probably struggling to pump the water out with the water pressure pushing against it and/or there's more surfing tension on the top of the water to give more force. I though it was too high too until I heard that.

I think that he would have been better off submerging the nozzle in the water, that way he could push water instead of pushing air. I know there is succion generating thrust too but my instinct tells me he's probably losing half the thrust by keeping the nozzle up in the air

Get the nozzle a little deeper to get better thrust....you would get MUCH better performance if you took the pump impeller and housing off and used a propeller in a thruster housing instead....

I'd drop the motor another 4 inches. You lose a lot of efficiency with half the water coming up as a spray.

@jamesfennelly5732 жыл бұрын
Seems like it would be. But from my research nozzle 50% submerged is most efficient. Which kind of proved out in this test. 2.3 mph compared to 1.3 fully submerged.

Agree..."something a little different" but it's technically no longer a bilge pump in this configuration. Used in this situation its nothing more than another battery powered propulsion device, impeller in this case. So I guess it comes down to your needs as the skipper, it's clear this setup is not as responsive as a traditional trolling motor and I'm quite confident the efficiency is no where close to what a standard propeller (screw if you want to name it correctly). IDK, only agree here that "it's something a little different". Thanks for sharing.
@wenshuoma Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I also feel that if it is replaced with a thruster, the thrust conversion will be better. But the DIY idea is still cool.😁
