I believe the key to HM laundry soap are the bars, they need to be at 0% super fat, so don't use CP or HP soap made for the body, the super-fat builds up on fabrics and , in this instance, stops towels being absorbent, also oil build-up stops the washing liquids effectiveness as its trying to wash through a layer of oil build-up. Don't use a 100% coconut oil bar soap for coloured cloths, bar soap made with all coconut oils is far to harsh and will lighten textile dyes quite quickly, these dyes will only stay true between a certain PH range and a 100% coconut oil soap falls out of that range. Use a 50% coconut oil 50% rice bran oil bar soap at 0% super-fat for coloured washes and a 100% coconut oil bar soap at 0% super-fat for whites. If you have kiddies in the house it's better to use washing soda as Borax is toxic. Neither Borax or washing soda are biodegradable if that is a consideration of yours. Washing soda and Borax are water softeners, soft water allows the soap to work at its full potential.

Thank you very much for the explanation! Do you think I could use my homemade cleaning soap with 75% coconut (10% Olive, 10% Rice Bran, 5% Castor) for coloured clothes? Or is that too much coconut already?

I think that would be fine, as long as there's no superfat :)

@@FrankGutowski-ls8jt Frank Gutowski I was concerned about all the things I was hearing about soap vs detergent and why soap is not good for laundry. And that all can be true, and here's what I have learned about how to get around it. 1. I use citric acid in my soap formulation 2. I also make my own chelator solution. Combine 1L distilled water, 6g sodium hydroxide, 10g citric acid. I put a cup or so in my wash BEFORE adding soap and clothes, A chelator will bind with any hard water minerals before it has a chance to react with the soap and create soap scum. 3. I add the diluted vinegar rinse in the water softener compartment to help disolve and rinse away any possible remaining residue and soften fabrics. I'm still experimenting with this, but so far my clothes and towels are are looking nice. I learned about the chelator from someone with a chemistry background on another forum. I think Elly knows what she's talking about. :)

@@nowexit Borax is a naturally occurring mineral substance that is biodegradable and dissolves in water. It is a great natural alternative to harsh chemicals. 👉UPDATE May 2023: Hello everyone! Just wanted to let you know that this formula turned into a nice liquid soap given the bar soap base I used and the temperature of my environment here in Brisbane at the time I made it, but since the weather has cooled down a lot more, my liquid has turned to gel! No big deal though, it still works really well. Some people have also reported that their product turned to a gel, even in warmer weather! In these cases tallow and palm oil were used (high palmitic acid), so be prepared for variations depending on the type of soap you use in this recipe. All good fun experimenting! Excellent and informative !!!!!! I used to grate my soap and dilute it in hot water and in a separate container I dissolved the borax and washing soda and then mix the two solutions. I usually left them overnight to get together (!!!!!!) and know each other (!!!!!) and in the morning I got a kind of jelled liquid soap that I could dilute further with hot water. What I discovered is that borax (like essence oils) clouds the liquid and it causes soap to jell easier. I looked it up because I thought that I was doing something wrong but that's how it turns out normally. Have a great day everyone!!!

Mine boiled over. . 😅but i brought the water to a boil and then added my ingredients. Setting my burner to simmer(2) I stirred every 5 minutes x 3. Then let it cool. Thank you.

I am intrigued by your clotheslines/pulley system ! It's fantastic ! I don't have anywhere in our house where I could have a set-up like that....but boy, I wish I did ! I've got a good system that works well....but yours is kind of amazing. I really enjoyed this video. It was fun & interesting. I agree w/the comment below mine that says they're glad you don't have background music. I find that so distracting on other channels. I go both ways....I make my own laundry soap (dry) & I use Molly's Suds , Charlie's & Mrs. Meyers. I have all on hand & use whatever I'm in the mood to use. I think the liquid version you made w/lemon & basil essential oils sounds lovely ! When I make my own powdered version, I use a bar of plant-based soap (I enjoy varying the scent), baking soda, washing soda & Borateem.I have made our own bar soap several times in past years. I don't any more. There are so many nice ones already out there. It just got to be a little too risky. We have a very small kitchen, 3 nosey kitties , a dog & no door on the kitchen to keep them from being underfoot.

Great video as always. A tip for anyone who says their towels don't dry as well or abosorb as good, if you're using fabric softener, that is the issue. It leaves a film on the fabric which is why your towels don't dry you off as good.

As always great video. In fact if you bake Bicarb Soda in the oven the heat chemically changes it to Sodium Carbonate. If any of your followers want to make it on a large scale just look for Soda Ash/ Baracuda Ash. I was going to add Borax to my version but there is a caution on there for pregnant women so I am extra cautious not to add it. I also use my powder version in the dishwasher! works a treat! I believe we have been fooled into thinking we need different products. And I use vinegar in the rinse in the washing machine AND the dishwasher. I have made liquid bar soap at a pinch, without the washing soda of course - using just bar soap and water for the skin. Great video even with Queenie haircut :) lovely.

Hi Elly, Reporting back on my endeavours with this recipe. Albeit …without any Laundry Soap, I decided to make a 500gm CoconutOil batch [5-8gm Rice Bran - due to scales] 0 Superfat, & pour the equivalent amount of batter, as required of the grated Soap, into the pre dissolved (in off-the-boil water) Soda Ash and Borax Liquid - Note Here: I had Soda Ash on hand which, from my research indicated that it was much the same as Washing Soda - being Sodium Carbonate. And I decided to include 25% Borax i.e. 167gm Soda Ash & 83gm Borax. Not only saved time but also all that grating ; ) ; ). Borax is also a water softener, & soap scum defender, added to being antibacterial and all the other ‘antis’ ; )) Initially I thought that my scales had miscalculated the water amount, and that I had too much because it was ‘very’ liquid and had a white layer on the surface- which I kept trying to stir in - unsuccessfully, I might add. In fact over time the white layer kept getting thicker - stir, stir, stir - so much for being clever and cutting corners, I thought to myself 😊😊. By this stage, having started late at night, it was early morning, and I had already fallen asleep at the dining room table. // But…back into it - I think I gave it a blend at this stage…didn’t result in the white layer blending in 🤔. Oh well, off to lay me down with thoughts of considering my options in the much later, morning 😊. Happily, I discovered that the white had developed all the way through - panic stations over. “Ahh…that ‘white layer’ is meant to be happening” Dhurr… Thought I’d leave it another day to ensure that it didn’t set 😅 …after having given it another whizz with the trusty Immersion blender. Looking lovely. Happily, I can report that all was in order, and the resultant runny porridge consistency is easily ‘squirtable’ from my former Eco Dishwashing Liquid bottle. Meanwhile I got a fit of ‘the cleans’ and cleaned everything in sight to a gleaming finish 😊. I gave it a whirl in the waiting dishwasher - brilliant results! Sparkling clean - no white spots. Lovely to touch the supremely clean dishes. I’ve washed well-used hand towels - including kitchen hands - all to a wondrous result. Every basin or sink in the house is radiant, floors and loos as well ; )) Oven Door and Fridge, Ceramic Hob… Normally I would mix Borax, Baking Soda & sometimes Soda Ash or Washing Soda & a few grates of whatever soap bits I have - for Dishwasher and Laundry - with White Vinegar in the Rinse container. But using the already broken down liquidy-mix is much easier (after all the creating) and produces excellent results. So 🎉‘here’s to you’, Elly, 🎉 for the inspiration 🥂. I was ‘chatting’ with you all the way through this process ; ) ; ) Hope you didn’t get lost in all that description 😊. Now I also have 4 hefty Laundry Bars & 1 ‘Paw’ for Hand Washing delicates etc/pre wash rubs…and soap to grate for another batch unless I decide to do another ‘batter pour’ 😉😉

I have a whole bunch of older cleaning coconut bars I can grind up, the only thing different I'll add sodium gluconate to it to help with my hard water issue. Before ever making LS with KOH I tried this method. It would go gel / hard in colder weather and go liquid again in warmer weather. You can gently heat it in a warm water bowl to bring it back to liquid state. I haven't tried washing soda with any type of soap so looking forward to doing what you suggested. Very interesting. I have a clothesline outside. I have been hanging laundry outside (obviously not on rainy days) for over 50 years now. Sunlight is a natural bleaching agent for whites; it also helps to kill bacteria. On the opposite side, cold helps to kill bacteria and germs, which is why doctor's offices and hospitals are cold. Once winter comes, the only wash that can go out are the bed sheets; clothes won't dry outside in the winter--unless the fabric is lightweight. Denim will take forever, so they go in the dryer. I love putting my towels outside. Yes, they get rough feeling, but that helps to scrub off or exfoliate your skin; fluffy towels don't absorb much moisture. Fabric softener is a waste of money. It's basically a bunch of chemical ingredients--some of which are mystery ingredients--with "fragrance" added, of which the consumer is duped into thinking that it's great for your laundry. Use only vinegar or Epsom salts in the fabric softener dispenser. Epsom salts will help soften the laundry without harming the fabric or adding unpronounceable ingredients onto what you wear or use after showering. For fragrance, add about 1/2 teaspoon of essential oils--one or more--to the Epsom salts and stir. It will not stain your clothes, nor will there be any leftover on them, since the washer dissolves it. Love your video. I may try to make liquid laundry soap, however the only bars of homemade are those that I use for showering. I would appreciate a recipe to make the laundry soap bars so I can try to make the liquid.

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 😇Glad I could help. BTW, one 16-oz Mason jar should be used for the Epsom salts. Fill the jar, then add the essential oils that you want for true fragrance, not chemicals. EO's are pure and contain no chemicals. Add a tablespoon or so to the fabric softener dispenser.

I quite like the gel 😊. More controllable and takes up less room 😊😊. It’s a long while since I’ve previously watched this…so am hoping you explained what you did that resulted in the Gel…And you did! 😊 // Presumably you found each version produced the same efficacy in the wash…? Looks like you’re stocked for Life, now 😉😉. Methinks your beautiful Australian Trea Tree E.O. would be the perfect addition to your Laundry Soap. It has its own wondrous beneficial qualities. 🙏 Personally I’ve always used Borax and Baking Soda, sometimes with Soda Ash &/or Washing Soda - depending upon availability…coupled with the White vinegar touch to rinse. I also make a general cleaning spray - great degreaser/egg yolk remover from dishes cutlery etc prior to washing, and spot cleaning: Borax requires hot water to dissolve effectively. Dissolve 1-3tsps Borax in roughly 200ml hot water - say about 85 degrees - make sure there are no undissolved grains of Borax or it’ll block the spray hole ; )) [can be remedied but a bit of a kerfuffle]. Put this into your spray bottle and top up with White Vinegar - shake gently, to combine, and you’re all set to go. My spray bottles [former eco spray cleaners] are 500ml. I use it on all surfaces, spills, marks on floors, you name it. But those addicted to those unnecessary bubbles will have to adjust to a non bubbling cleaner ; ))

I was a little bit down today because I had to call a plumber had to cut the water off from the outside this tub is driving me crazy 😃. So I called the plumber and they'll be out here tomorrow. They wanted $1,000 so I figure for $1,000 I can get a brand new tub laugh out loud. So your video came on which it's night time here and you always put a smile on my face. I was smiling so hard my face start hurting 🤣😅🤣😅🤣. So with that being said Ellen if I ever come to your country it would be an honor to share a recipe and make some soap with you and I will be joining your membership when I can stop fixing things around this house ☺️

Good job Elly. First time I made liquid laundry soap it went jelly like. So had to shake or stir before every use. I didn’t like it. My measurements were off and I used other ingredients. Now I feel like making it again :)

Hi elly I just wanted to say that I use your dry version for over 3 months but now you have the liquid version I had to try. The soap bar with citric acid i made first with hot process, then I chopped up my soap bars because me and graters don't mix. One load done and I have to say I'm in love with the recipe. Thank you so much.

I finally made this today! I used a 100% coconut oil soap that I made for this purpose. But I had made it lye heavy and it was crumbly, which turned out to be okay since it was for this. I put it in the processor and ground it up. 😁 I used arm & Hammer washing soda and I threw in some baking soda, as well. I had used a fragrance in my soap called sensual sandalwood, so the detergent smells amazing! I just did a load of sheets and they came out smelling clean! Thank you so much Elly! God bless you! 🙏💜 🙏

Thank you for the video! I think it's a great idea. But I've only made soap for just over a year now but I've heard numerous times not to try making liquid soap with bar soap. Yours looks just like your liquid soap! Nice and lovely! So, I'm wondering why not make a liquid laundry soap with potassium hydroxide? Actually I don't recall ever seeing one of those. I haven't really looked though. My hubby did make laundry soap two ways so far, one was coconut and tallow fifty fifty I believe and the other was just straight coconut. I think I will play with some of it and see if I can make some liquid laundry soap. Thank you Elly for another great video!
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Жыл бұрын
Yes, you absolutely can just make a liquid soap with potassium hydroxide, but I think a laundry formula works much better with the washing soda added! I've tried using coconut oil liquid soap for laundry, and it didn't work as well as this does.

When I made mine, I used olive and coconut oils (50/50) and with citric acid. I made mine in middle of winter and it stayed liquid, however I mixed it with my remaining liquid detergent I had on hand, so that may be a factor. So I'm making a new batch today because Im running low. Im looking forward to seeing how it works out :) I have warm weather right now, so I guess I'll have to wait a little while... 🤷‍♀️. Its works really nicely though, I am grateful for your thoughtful and thorough experimentation to help us all find a nice recipe! :)

Has anyone tried this recipe? i did and ended up with a gel soap... my recipe was 100% palmkernel oil laundry homemade soap by me. i was disappointed😢😢 at first but later loved it, it cleans clothes so well and i used it for washing my aluminium pans too and they come out so shiny when used with a pot iron scrub... Thanks Elly... I'll make it again to see if i skipped something... love from Nigeria

Elly, I'm so glad that I found you. I'm totally new to soap making and find all your videos helpful and charming. I love that you show when something went wrong. That makes it easier for a newbie like me to deal with mistakes. Also, it's so nice that you Aussies use the metric system which makes watching the videos much easier for me (German). Concerning adding scent to the liquid soap, I have one question: Could one add something like orange oil which does colour the soap a bit or does it show in the laundry? Also, you are using vinegar as detergent, but doesn't the laundry then smell like the vinegar and not at all like the essential oils you've used?

Hi Elly, first of all thank you for your wonderful information you so kindly share. I follow closely both yourself and George and you are both beautifully genuine people. Elly I am wondering if you are making liquid washing detergent from the bars, do you still have to Wait the time for the ph to come down or can you make the liquid from the fresh bars? Also can you point me in the right direction for your video on adding in SAFELY the citric acid and sugars, salt and so on, with the lye. I will also be searching for Georges one as well. Thank you you beautiful people - you are what the world needs more of 🥰
