We never successfully determined what it was. It looked like a large washer and my builder concluded it could have been in the engine a long time. It was not a part of the engine he recognized. About 3 months earlier I had a local Indy drop transmission and check IMS. IMS was larger size not replaceable without splitting case so they ended up just doing a clutch and a new rms. I personally blame them but have no proof. .

Strange that the plugs are missing from the ends of the camshafts, I am working on my 3rd M96 engine (all from Boxsters) and haven't seen this. Could they have been blown out by excess crankcase pressure?

Hello Grant, prior to this 996 arriving in the tiny garage the car was inspected by a European sports car specialist in orange county, they removed the cam bore plugs. Episode 13 talks about that subject kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJiZg52BZ9p1eqc Thank you for watching 🤘😎
