Finishing up and trying out the hoverboard motor as a generator for the hydro project. Haven't given up yet but had discouraging results.

If you run the pos/neg from the bridge rectifier to a solar controller it will adjust voltage, run a load and use the excess to charge batteries. You can also use the output to directly connect a small grid tie inverter and feed back into the house.

Hey man this is my two cents on your really great idea. :) I think you need more air to allow the water to flow better, Like when you try and pour a bottle too fast" and it starts surging the flow of the liquid, but if you keep a gap for the air it flows fast and smooth :) You can actually hear the pulsing water in the video too! :) Maybe try a taller shaft with long air slots along the shaft or possibly a two-way pipe, one for the shaft and the offshoot for breathing water doesn't flow great in a temporary vacuum. :) Best of luck and I look forward to following your journey.

Brilliant work. Great to see someone able to harvest all that energy that was practically being wasted.

I am on the same journey now, I keep rewatching your videos, I love your craftsmanship, I have something semi built not tested yet and one motor left that I am not touching intil I watch enough videos to 100% make sure I find the right project for it lol, if u have time I’d love to chat and maybe u could offer some guidance thanks man love your build

Enjoy the videos! Seemed like it did really good when you were just holding it in the pipe. My only thought is maybe the propeller needs to be further down the pipe

the end of that pipe, make it longer down the stream! longer pipe = more head.

great work man !! i think : do not try to use the direct energy but use a micro inverter ?

For turbine design inspiration, KZbin channel @RobertMurraySmith has oodles of videos exploring 3D printed prototypes that he puts on Thingyverse, I think. As other comments have pointed out already, deeper down the pipe is better. It probably wouldn't hurt to secure the business end with a housing and bearing so the shaft doesn't weeble-wobble and have the blades scrape at the sides. It's also an out-there idea but I've never thought to ask if an Archimedes' screw functions in reverse. The physics of how one operates normally beguiled me for a long time, I don't want to have to work out the reverse at midnight for me now! XD

as long as the down pipe is flooded then the position of a turbine such as this doesnt actually matter. they work upon the mass flow of water, and that is always the same regardless of where in the pipe you place it. what goes in must come out! and as long as its always the same diameter, the speed is always the same... whereas a pelton wheel relies on head and needs to be at the base. an archimedes screw only works on the head. has limitations. as its an inclined plane... requires a 45 degree helix for best efficiency. the angle of the entire screw down the hill also ideally has to be 45 degrees. they cant harness any of the momentum of that water, just the torque of the water pushing the screw aside as it falls down the slope. for a turbine in this situation to work, the water has to enter with the full velocity it can flow at, pass through the turbine freely and CHANGE DIRECTION... then its momentum is acting on the blades. THAT is the energy you extract. the reaction on the blades due to mass in motion being forced to change direction.

You need some electronics to run the generator at its Maximum Power Point i.e.a MPPT device - a cheap Chinese one would help - probably you need to draw about 20volts from the generator to get the max power out of it. Also you need as much flow and head as possible, I would be trying near the water wheel.

you have to measure the motor resistance... thats the highest load you can drive, an equal resistance.. the generator will deliver the maximum voltage and maximum current. the actual power delivered will depend on RPM and it will have a sweet spot for maximum power output, into the ideal load. if you can spin it up with a motor or something, you can figure that out. ideally, your load stays higher in resistance than the generator... otherwise its the generator that gets hot and no power is seen in the "load"... its ohms law, but... no-one ever mentions that the generator resistance matters, do they? think it through... where does the current flow? in the generator AND the load. the capacitor on the light bulb is funny. and also demonstrates all of the above nicely... with a large capacitor, when its discharged, the generator is hard to spin, as the capacitor acts like a dead short. as it charges, less and less current can get pushed onto its plates, the voltage rises... and it gets easier and easier to spin until its reached the peak voltage it can attain... the bigger the capacitor, the more this will be noticeable. charge the cap, it can light the bulb, then bang, the bulb resistance is too low or the RPM too low to deliver the required power to the bulb and keep it lit... the turbine itself is a whole other ball game. look into francis turbines, kaplan turbines... and learn to CAD! here, the blades spin with the water... and then what? you need the water to change direction as it passes through the turbine. the momentum of the flow rate at a certain velocity creates a torque. as it is flooded, unlike a pelton wheel, and water is incompressible, the passageways have to be proportioned so that bernoullis applies at all times... velocity exchanging for pressure and vice versa. as smoothly as possible. turbulence and cavitation is a loss... water comes in with the velocity of the fall down that pipe, and as it passes through the turbine, it changes direction, and flows the other way. it exchanges its momentum for pressure against the back of the blade as it changes direction, creating torque. action, and reaction. as the turbine should be spinning at half this velocity when the turbine is fully loaded, the water should flow directly "down". that is, when unloaded, the water should spin the same way as the turbine does. when the turbine is locked, the water should spin the opposite way as it leaves the turbine to what it enters. and when the turbine is perfectly loaded, the water shouldnt spin at all. and at all times, the actual flow rate shouldnt change, the water should flow through the turbine almost as freely as it flows into the pipe. you know the height, the head, the velocity it can attain, and the flow rate with some maths. i am yet to see a turbine where the designer understands how they work published online? other than peltons? and people get them wrong as well...

Maybe if scaled up and a lot more water. When I get some extra time I want to rewind the hover board motor with more turns to increase the volts per RPM and try again.

@@kevincrawford2027 I wonder if the blade needs to be a flatter blade sort of like a boat propeller blade and a slightly further down inside the pipe. As I noticed on the video it seems to be awfully noisy I don't know if there was a lot of cavitation or with air being sucked back up the outlet of the pipe due to the restriction of the flow
@malanvogt
@malanvogt Жыл бұрын
I'm no expert at all not even close but I'd think you'd do better on the outlet side of the pipe vs the intake side. Much greater head pressure to prevent it from stalling underload. Also not sure that motor is ideal

I can't use the output side because it is to close the the road. No room to work and every thing would need to be water proof.

quiet? its a gurgling mess. this setup (your drain pipe) has ZERO HEAD PRESSURE! there needs to be a larger drop... at this point you may as well forget about rectifying to DC and just run the AC voltage directly to a household lights.

information you may know that a dc pm motor that is not Correctly Modified for its new purpose, makes a piss-poor alternator. maybe you don't know that the turbine runner should be in a housing that is located at the Lowest possible elevation; at the downstream end of the drain pipe. this is so because the amount of head being utilized is the distance between the runner and the surface of the water in a catchment. in order to optimally locate the runner, an 'angle' can be built into the pipe/housing, so that the turbine shaft can exit the pipe and be connected to the alternator. d
