Good odds that spray would eat the foam. I would have just drilled some holes in a couple of pieces of scrap wood. Something else I have seen around, but haven't tried myself, is using one of those cat scratching boards made from laminated corrugated cardboard. I'm in the "automotive world" and we never paint directly onto plastic simply because there will be 0 adhesion. We actually use a produce called plastic primer which you can get in clear aerosol form and it's basically an adhesion promotion for bare plastic to help paint stick to it, I think that will help with the paint not peeling using the aerosol epoxy.

How to fix the peeling problem: LIGHTLY SAND YOUR KEYS. The keys are smooth plastic, so naturally the spray resin would peel off, but if you sand the keys it will give the plastic some texture for the resin and color change powder to stay.

For better adhesion, you can give the surface a "pre-etch" with sodium hydroxide, toluene, acetone, or even hydrochloric acid. You need to increase the surface energy of the (probably) PBT keycaps.
@chlorophyllheart3 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking, but more basic, like sandpaper lol. There needs to be more surface area for the stuff to bond to.
@DD-lb7nn2 жыл бұрын
@@chlorophyllheart either that or use some kind of primer, which doesn't sound too far fetched, using black primer would have the same effect, maybe the only drawback would be the legibility of the actual keys
@yuris.31672 жыл бұрын
This would work if the problem was adhesion to the keycap surface, but their problem here is delamination from the crystal coating. Even with better adhesion, a thick coating would still separate into layers. Considering this, they provided a good possible solution, which is to make the resin layer permeate the crystal layer. We will have to wait to see if it worked.

A thought on the delaminating: it may be that the crystal paint needs a primer to be able to stick to that plastic properly (very common for a lot of types of paint, especially with smooth plastics), and that the clear you sprayed does not need a primer. If so, would only need one coat of the clear, a bunch of crystal coats, then the top clear coat. Might be an experiment for when you try to mood ring your, uh... steering wheel? I dunno, you're more creative than me figuring that out. :P

Hey Evan and Katelyn, did yall think about sanding the keys before spraying them. Its most likely the surface was too smooth, so sanding with a low grit puts grooves in the surface for the paint to adhere to. They sell a clear primer called adhesion promoter. It is specifically made to spray on plastic items to get paint to adhere properly. They use it on plastic bumper covers for cars when they paint them.

I dont know why I thought you guys were just going to like, spray mood stuff and then dump resin on the whole dang keyboard instead of taking off the keys. I was like "how tf is the keyboard gonna work it you- ooooooh yeah that makes much more sense lol"
