In this video I show how I made a fake vintage book cover from recycled cardboard and newspaper using paper mache.
Here's the paper clay recipe I used:
1 1/4 CUP SHREDDED NEWSPAPER (THIS WAS SOAKED IN WATER AND
SHREDDED AND SHREDDED IN A BLENDER THEN SQUEEZED DRY)
1 CUP WOOD FILLER
3/4 CUP PVA GLUE
MIX TOGETHER WELL

Okay, so this video has sparked a great idea to "re-skin" my favourite trade paperbacks. As in make each one a box to live in so they look beautiful on a shelf. I'm very crafty but mostly dry crafts; sewing, cosplay etc. Got any basic mache tips or beginner vids you'd suggest? I get that paper + wood glue = armour but I'm sure it's more nuanced than that. I'm gonno go watch the rest of them now as some of my Zelda figures need dioramas.

Great idea. I'd suggest looking at Unhinged Productions. He's great at paper mache. Here's a link to the first part of a paper mache spell book he created but you should check out his other videos too for tips kzbin.info/www/bejne/iF7Efnt6pMmpgdk. As for any tips I have for starting out, I suppose the biggest headache using paper mache is that cardboard when used as a base will always want to warp and bend out of shape once the glue is applied. For flat surfaces like a book cover once the paper and glue are applied I cover it with a sheet of grease proof paper and then put a heavy weight on it to prevent warping. The grease proof paper prevents the wet mache sticking to the weight. The downside to this though is that air circulation is reduced so it takes longer to dry. If you want to make something 3D which isn't flat like armour I'd use tin foil as a base instead of cardboard. Mould the shape with the foil and then apply layers of paper and glue. Finally I'd just say when applying your layers only apply one to three layers at a time, allow to dry and then apply another one to three layers. The more layers applied at one time the greater the drying time and the longer it remains damp the more chance of mold growing. Hope this was helpful.

@@MatthewsCraftRoom I am glad for you. Maybe it's the title or other SEO aspects?? (My search was for making 'fake books,' or I think maybe for 'paper maché fake books'... I got a suggestion/question of some sort, asking if I preferred to watch the kids KZbin channel.)
