In my last video I said I would add a second layer of paper mache clay to my giraffe to make the sculpture smoother. But then I remembered an easier way to do it - and you don't need to do any sanding at all.
You can find the new recipe for paper mache clay without flour here: • Paper Mache Clay Recip...
The giraffe is now finished. You can find the latest video here: • Make A Giraffe With Pa...
The original recipe for paper mache clay is here: • New Paper Mache Clay R...
The drywall joint compound smoothing technique can be used with either recipe.

I just used this method to smooth the horns on the Minotaur I'm working on. I spread the joint compound thinly with a knife and let it dry. I was in a hurry, so then I took it outside and used a sanding sponge to smooth it down. A lightly damp sponge works, and doesn't make a mess - but it does take a little longer.

Heather I have a question what do you do to prevent cracking when the joint compound dries? Or could you share your recipe? I new with this medium and I want to create art wall with it. I hope you can help me and I thank you for your time

@@LaReynaLagarto Hey there! Frankly, this has never been an issue...my pieces have never developed cracks - but, then again, I don't use layers that are more than 1/8" thick. If you are going to be building up substantial layers for your wall art, you may want to experiment with building them up incrementally - apply one layer, allow to dry, add the next, and so forth. Cracking usually occurs when the differential between the moisture content of the substance is very high, and the environmental conditions are quite dry and warm... allowing to dry slowly can help! xoxo

Most of my experiments didn't work out very well, I'm afraid. The epoxy works great (my squirrel has been outside in three bitterly cold Minnesota winters, rain, snow and sun, and looks the same as the day I made him. And my smaller concrete sculptures are doing OK, but the larger figure sculpture cracked. Have you found a good material to use for outdoor sculptures that's less expensive than epoxy?

That flat papier mache looks like it would be awesome to create art on!!
@UltimatePaperMache
@UltimatePaperMache 5 жыл бұрын
But it did warp, I'm afraid. I hoped that the masking tape would slow down the warping, and I think it did - but it still isn't entirely flat. It's hard to keep cardboard (or even plywood) from warping when something wet is added on just one side. I hope to experiment some more, because for years I've wanted to create a faux Mayan wall carving. It might work if the shapes are built up with foil before adding the paper mache clay, but not if the clay is added directly to a flat background. If anyone has ideas for making it work, let us know. :)

I wonder why Amazon doesn't have a store in Brazil. It seems strange, doesn't it? Your local bookstore might be able to order one for you.

Have you tried using the air dry clay recipe? It's the same ingredients, but less paper and a little cornstarch to make it smoother. kzbin.info/www/bejne/imrPgIxnrbOmotk
