VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Sunny and Luna embarked on their nomadic journey after taking advantage of the opportunity to work remotely. For this adorable couple, the beginning of quarantine meant the start of traveling full time in their van, Stella. This sweet ride has a stylish interior with soothing tones and boho decor. Two swivel seats up front rotate, allowing separate workspaces and are multipurpose for an area to lounge, eat or entertain. There's a shower with a toilet directly across from a full kitchen with ample storage. The bed converts with ease into a seated table area with a wrap-around bench nicely set by the back doors. The rooftop is designed with a solar setup and a deck that's just the right size for star gazing and sunrise coffee. The entire van layout feels relaxed while providing everything they need to live self-sufficient and comfortably off-grid.

One thing that always cracks me up about Tiny/Nomadic Living is how random things end up being stored together. Like, "Here is our spice rack right next to where we hang our poop shovel" or "Next to the spices is where I keep my pee solidifying powder for the toilet" lol

Love this. I’m only 11 but over the past year I have been designing different van layouts. I really like what they said about having two swivel seats in the front and them not really converting the bed into the sofa. I always thought it was too much work but if you have another work space it desk the you don’t really need to convert it that often.

@@foreverhilaryy perhaps because it's an efficient side of the space that contains everything they wanted, like a wet bath? They have some unique features that I appreciate. Two swivel chairs, the beautiful swivel mounted table, the fridge is awesome and looks 50s inspired, the beautiful wood of the dinette table, and they cut a comfortable mattress to make their bed/dinette. They've put their own stamp on things. A layout is only as good as it's functionality, and there are only so many functional ways to use this small space. I think it's beautiful. They've made it a home, kept it uncluttered, and still managed to make it comfortable.

PROS: I like the purpose, the couple, instant water heater, projector, YoYo and the disco ball. LOL CONS: No offense intended, but this van is: OVERWEIGHT This is testimony to just how obsolete and out-of-touch present-day Van and RV manufacturers are in the United States. I am an engineer and have some constructive criticism. Every gram of weight counts. Seven issues: 1) NOT ECO-FRIENDLY Too heavy. Not aerodynamic. Low MPG. Poor cornering because of the high center of gravity. Should have big solar to make the claim "Best Quality and Design". People insist on outfitting their rigs with doodads like wasteful showers, heavy wood cabinetry, exterior lights, wasteful water heaters, roof decks, vents, sky lights and ladders. Most van build windows are outdated silicon glass. They should be dual-pane acrylic like in Europe. Insulation is minimal because cockpit is not thermally isolated from living area. The wood cabinetry and doors could be lightened by 50% or eliminated. Should have a SEER 33 split-mini for climate control. It's a camper van, not a house. Please care about the environment. 2) EXPENSIVE All of the above doodads cost money that unwitting customers pay for because they do not understand first principals of engineering regarding minimization. The lithium batteries in this van cost about $1000/usable KWH (KiloWatt Hour). My Tesla battery cost about 8x less. My empty Sprinter van with a BlueTec i4 turbodiesel gets 30MPG, and 25MPG with the camper build at 55 MPH. The van in this video is so overburdened I doubt it even gets 16MPG. Expensive fridge. My fridge costs $195 and is 2x larger. 3) HOT WATER DELAY With a remote hot water heater, it will take up to 30 minutes to get hot water. If the hot water tank is pre-heated, it still may take 30 seconds to get hot water. Meanwhile, much water is wasted. This hot water tank design wasted both water and energy. To resolve this, I installed a true-instant hot water faucet; six seconds for hot water. 4) NOT BOONDOCKABLE Greenwashing: Since there is inadequate solar, fossil fuels must be used to charge the battery and keep the van warm. If it is winter, very little solar power is available so big solar is required. Wasteful water design will require frequent trips to replenish. 5) FOUR-SEASON, NOT Customers camping in the hot summer or cold winter will have issues with energy usage and temperature control due to the lack of insulation and outdated climate control. My Mitsubishi heat pump has a SEER of 33 and can heat down to -13F. A lot of fossil fuel will be needed to stay warm in winter. Water will freeze and burst pipes. 6) NOISY The choice of outdated climate control will lead to excessive CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) airflow, causing high noise levels. Max air fans are noisy and don’t move much air. Diesel heaters noisy, emit toxic gas and are high-maintenance. They don’t work past 6000ft unless adjusted. 7) POWER Small battery and inverter are inadequate to power a house on wheels. To resolve the above problems, see my Tim's Tips van build at: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6mzm2Vno8iempI

If what they’ve got is working for them then what’s the big deal? Very cool that you’re an engineer. But that’s not a prerequisite to living in a van. You don’t need all the fanciest stuff to make this life work.
@tdrager
@tdrager 3 жыл бұрын
@@wildsage My critique is for future van builders; adding heavy and expensive thick wood ceilings, cabinets, doors, propane tanks, hot water tanks, ladders, lead batteries, heavy copper cables, unused roof decks, noisy, heavy and expensive ACs, and fans and wasteful showers is not only tone-deaf, but wastes money, and lowers MPG. Every gram counts. Reducing toxic gas emissions counts. Thanks.

@@Flowergurl2000 The Mitsubishi 6000 BTU mini split will supply heat down to -13F. It’s quiet as a mouse. The Chinese Diesel heater may have trouble igniting above 6000ft, especially in cold weather. Hey, I bought one, then decided to use only the mini split because of the above issues, they sound like a jet taking off and they pollute our lungs. There are no pollution controls / catalyst on any diesel heater I know of.

Great design and nicely built. I think I could live quite happily in that van for long periods. Might be a bit tight for the three of us!

There's plenty of people out there who don't carry while they are doing vanlife. I personally would have a dog. :)

@@billybatesjr1837 the cool thing about skoolies and vans is that you can build in safes if that’s your thing.

If you do carry anything, make sure you know the laws for every state you’ll be in. Noo Yok ain’t Texas, friends. Also, make sure you’ve had training, are proficient, and know when and when not to use it. Remember, your best defense is to not be there. Drive away if the situation looks bad.
