Add another one to the "fun to watch" build. I really like the use of practical effects over the green screen. It really sells the scene. As you stated, it allows for some possibilities of better camera shots and actor interactions. Not that I make movies, I play with toys, and scratch build scifi stuff for my own benefit. Something you helped spur into my life some four odd years ago. I have just recently started using thin foam sheets for cuatom greeblies on builds as you can seal them with ca glue, and they hold paint. I look forward to the next installment and to your film.

Thanks for this Anthony. I was missing a sc-fi fix and this was just the job. Amazing work as usual, and this practical effect has so many uses.

I was wanting to do something similar for a gauges/ocilloscope/sonar practical effect. So many awesome tips!

I don't remember where I first saw it, but trashed flat screen TVs are a great source of glass once you take it apart for the 18:00 mark. There's a back light diffuser panel that can be re-tasked like a large panel of polystyrene. Even the backlight LEDs can be used, but that's probably more work that buying a roll of LEDs from Amazon. Plus the random electronic bits and bobs for flash.

Would old computer monitors work? I'm thinking sort of porthole style, smaller monitors and little round windows
@BongoWongoOGАй бұрын
They will work perfectly (so long as you have a computer to push the images to them). I've made similar windows/portholes with old monitors and laptops (largest being a 50 inch TV). Adds some nice practical dimension AND you can put stars, spaceships, underwater scenes or other actor on the monitor. Simple and very effective.

They will and I am working. ion one now

@@createscifi Awesome, You'll have to show us the finished product for the full effect. Would love to see a walkthrough of the set when done if you can.

So for another project I could imagine putting a CGI place marker on the screen in that window and then you could use that to comp in one of your camera passes of a model star ship that is using the same star field background that your displaying on the screen in the rest of the scene. I'm also curious how different the window would look if you did a peppers ghost rather than looking directly at the TV.
@createscifiАй бұрын
Absolutely and I've done that. Trying something different

If the TV isn't wide enough, you can always stick a mirror on the side.
