DIY Triple Monitor Stand for Sim Racing ($75-$100)

This rig can be built for triples for around $75 and $100 if you want the 4th monitor up top. In the video I explain the tools you will need, lengths of the wood members, and a verbal walkthrough of the build process.
I got a few requests to explain how I constructed my triple monitor stand so I figured I would share with everyone! I can get a bit long winded but I really wanted to cover every base and hammer some important points home.

Best of luck! I recommend buying two small angles to fasten the monitor arms in place once you get them positioned. Ive keep bumping them on accident and sometimes it moves them

@@Kevinbaconator_ yea man, I can’t compare it to anything cause it’s my first triples setup but it’s awesome so far. I love the size. I think 32” is perfect. I still gotta mess with the angles to get them dialed in. I just eyeballed it cause I really wanted to drive 😂 I didn’t change the design at all for the larger monitors. All I did was make the arms 2x6 because my vesa mounts had a mounting plate that was taller than a 2x4. My mounts are also arms that have quite a bit of adjustability on their own so they reach out a bit

@@HestaBeezy hey man. No, I still used the same dimensions. However I did use monitor arms rather than the solid mounts. So I had a lot of adjustment to the angle and everything within the arm and didn’t have to spend a lot of time adjusting the 2x6s

I went for the 30 by 60 aluminium profile and pivot brackets, vesa mount and used steal cables and pully's to connect to the seiling.. looks very clean and cost around 100 euro to and can put the screen exactly between the wheelbase and wheel and pull them up if needed

thats actually an incredibly interesting idea...I own my home now and would love to cut down on the floor space my rig takes up. I may try the same but connected to the wall up higher with tensioned wires to cancel out moment.

Love the design of the adjustable monitor arms, thank you! I made my cockpit out of wood and it's been perfect. Totally customizable and 100% solid because I was able to add a ton of extra structure to the frame with just a few extra 2x4s. The whole build cost me less than $100 and I've been very pleased it with. I am looking to switch to triples from VR and looking to make a triple monitor stand like this. Thanks for the vid!

Great video and thanks for sharing! IMO it's a great alternative to spending hundreds more on a pre built stand so I'm leaning that route myself. Since it's been almost a year now that you've been using it, is there things you would do different? Is there areas you had to modify of reinforce?

Things I would do different: - paint it black first. It really doesn't take much additional time and increases look 100% -spend more time making the Vesa mounts level with each other. I eventually went back and re-drilled them as they were almost 1/2" off. -once I know the length of the arms needed, cut off the additional length. I've probably got 6" of unnecessary wood on each monitor arm that's not needed, making it look sloppy. Other than that it's worked great for me. I attached a surge protector for all the power cables on the back, and a piece of wood to clamp my microphone to at some point, which is very easy since it's all wood. Still serving it's purpose perfectly and still would do this over aluminum any day

When I built my chassis out of wood, I didn't paint it cause I was so eager to get it done and play it. Thinking I'd go back and paint it later... it's now been 2 years and its still raw wood haha

Love the mount stand. I’m thinking of doing one similar, but instead of making arms just buying a clamp down triple monitor mount for a desk and placing it on the first horizontal board. What do you think? Seems like it would be easier to get them all level

Probably would be a lot easier. I'd recommend getting a quality monitor stand though. A cheap triple will probably cause your side screens to sag when the arms are extended. Or do 3 cheap triples and then you can set the side arms higher than the middle to balance them out

That's the asus bezel free kit, didn't include it in the rest since I haven't had time to test it out proper, also it retails around $100 so wouldn't really fit the spirit of the build

How do you level side arms? If everything else is square do they come out OK? That seems like it would be the biggest challenge

Side arms are leveled based off the space between the 2x4 pieces that connect the legs behind the center screen. The more level and tight those are, the less your arms will sag. Get them tight and square enough and you'll have no sag. If you do get some bend, you can make up for it by placing the Vesa mounts on arms slightly adjusted to counteract any height difference and angle compared to the center screen

The less frustrating solution was that I bought a new gaming PC and retired the old one to be dedicated to the Sim. But my 1080ti had 4 outputs and I would just plug and unplug the display port cables. I had them numbered so I would install them in the right spot each time. Sometimes I still had to fiddle with the display settings

@@Kevinbaconator_ Sounds similar to me. I am using my laptop as my sim machine for now. Ive looked for HDMI/Display port switches and they all usually limit hz, so figured id ask. Hopefully, the 3060 in my laptop doesnt melt once i get 3 displays going haha... On another note, I cut all my lumbar and have 2 coats of primer on it today. Hey KevinBaconator_ this looks sick. I am worried about whether or not ill have to spread the legs farther apart. Im planning on using 3 34 inch flat ultra wides. Do you think i would need to do that or any other kind of adjustment?

it would probably need to be a little wider. I can't say how much without the brackets, monitor, arms and such. My suggestion would be to make it like 1' wider, set it up at the angle you'd like & install monitors, and see how much extra gap you have in the frame. Measure that gap and remove it from width. it really shouldn't take that much extra time. You can always cut the wood shorter, but you can't make it longer.

Thanks for advice, i went ahead and built it, adding about 8 inches to the width. It came out great, i only have the one monitor at the moment but i have enough space to fit in the wood for the other two monitors. I am curious though, i noticed on your channel that you built a wooden cockpit. I built mine the same day i built this. Do you use a DD drive wheel on your set up? Hey Kev, thanks for the video and the design. Maybe I missed it, but how did you fix the arms into the cross beams and decide on and confirm the angle of them? I've seen most people recommend using 60deg for the angle. Just interested how you placed them identically, so they were even on each side.

They aren't fixed. The arms are held in by friction. The gap They slide in is maybe an 1/8" larger than the arms are, so without any weight, you can slide them in no problem. Once you add the monitor weight, the arms want to tip forward a little, so they wedge themselves in the opening and don't move. So as Long as you lift up on the monitors (this takes the weight off the arms), you can adjust the angle and position of them at any time.

Nice one. Looks good. Do you have a dedicated PC for the triples? I find it insanely frustrating to go from a single monitor for daily use and other gaming to the triple monitors for racing. The whole nvidia surround procedure is maddening. I have to end task on about 9 programs before I can even begin to configure the monitors and I have to configure every time I go to use the triples. I did the research before buying triples but didnt see one single mention anywhere about that disaster called nvidia surround.

This is probably the most frustrating part of the whole system. I dont have a dedicated pc, so I have to share all the inputs. The way I have it set up is (Gaming screen) (second screen/sim rig left) (sim rig center) (sim rig right) the gaming screen gets a dedicated display port since its 1440p. The second monitor and the left sim monitor are on a display port switch. The sim rig center has a dedicated display port. And the sim rig right monitor is hdmi. Currently building a new rig and will be able to have my old one be dedicated to sim racing You can get iracing to work without Nvidia surround, but others need it)

You can set a hot key to toggle nvidia surround on and off in there settings... it’s what I do... it’s a little glitchy so sometimes it doesn’t work... most the time it works though... and it only takes me 30 seconds to do it the old fashioned way... you shouldnt have to re configure every time you switch, just click enable/disable. Then you won’t have to end tasks and go through the whole set up. I have a DIY rig with triples and I use my right screen for games like Call of duty and other stuff, two screens are locked in place (center and left screen) on a double monitor mount, right monitor is on one of those gas monitor arms, I just swing the right screen back and forth.

Just held in with friction. Once you get the monitors adjusted where you want them it might not be a bad idea to run a screw in. Sometimes I knock them getting in and out and have to re-adjust the angle.

Unfortunately no. But I can briefly describe it. The bottom frame is 2x10 wood. It's 4' long by 2' wide. The seat platform is a 2x4 wood, cut to fit the inside dimension of the larger wood frame. I essentially squeezed it in between at the angle I wanted my seat and set it with Screws. The wheel stand is additional 2x4 construction with nothing special about it. Sorry I can't give better detail at the moment

I think it would work with 32s as is, but the arms maybe need to be a few inches longer. If not, the distance between the legs would need to be a little larger to allow the 45 degree angle arms to get around the middle monitor

They're in there loose. The weight of the monitor wedges them in though, so it doesn't move. Then when you want to adjust, you lift up on the monitor to take the weight off and the arms move easily, for adjustment of angles and length

Should work with 32s as long as you leave enough room between the legs for the center monitor. Might need to be a few inches wider to allow you to still get a 45 degree angle around it. your arms will just need to be a little longer.

The wood pieces I have sticking out for the side arms for my 27" monitors are 36". For 40" tvs you're probably looking at closer to 42" arms
