Someone else mentioned already, but won't the beneficial bacteria be different in a brackish setup? I'd be worried about the salt killing the original freshwater bacteria in the canister. But then again I only have experience with full freshwater and full saltwater, so maybe the salt content is so low that nothing changes. Just a thought. Cool set up btw! Can't wait to see the difference between the two species!

Mike Kirkpatrick The salinity to start off with is only 1.002, so basically fresh water with a touch of salt. This is fine for the bacteria. Over the weeks, I will increase it to around 1.007-1.008, which is still pretty low as far as salinity.

I like the 40g better, the waterfall feature is awesome, but that's not the only reason. I think a 40g is more manageable and do- able for folks who want to try something like this, but don't have the resources or room to have a dedicated fish room. Good job with the waterfall feature. 👍💕👍
@TazawaTanks5 жыл бұрын
ShelbyRae Lane Thanks! The 40g tank is definitely more manageable for most people. It may be a little small for the African mudskippers though.

Hey mate. I am planning an ourdoor brackish pond. Its designed to work. Anyway i am wanting Archer fish and crabs. What one would be good to get out of the 2 mudskippers?
@TazawaTanks5 жыл бұрын
The Pond Life well, the Africans would be larger and better able to fend for themselves. I’d be worried about them in an outdoor pond though. They could easily escape, or get eaten by predators (even neighborhood cats).

@nabokovfan875 жыл бұрын
Do you think you'll have an issue with the beneficial bacteria and using that filter on a tank that was fresh and is now brackish? If you didn't want to do brackish, is there a Gobi or mudskipper that is fresh only that you would choose?
@TazawaTanks5 жыл бұрын
nabokovfan87 The salinity is very low, and I’m ramping it up from 1.002 to 1.008 over time.
@nabokovfan875 жыл бұрын
@@TazawaTanks very cool. I actually was emailing caribsea and asking if I had to dump substrate if I converted a tank from fresh to salt or vice versa. It's a really intriguing subject. It is so difficult to get accurate info on salt that is safe or isn't for freshwater. Granted, the bacteria in each scenario is very different, but the question is will it work, do you need to actually deep clean a substrate, dry it, or let the tank convert naturally. After hearing Cory talk about salt, about how mollys are treating for disease and switch from fresh to salt, it makes me wonder about how the tank will handle it. If I had a tank for say, 2 months, is it converted? Definitely is something I am going to look into. Especially if reef sand is $40 for a 10lb bag in some cases. That is where my earlier question came from. Caribsea advised me to trash it. Just FYI

@TazawaTanks5 жыл бұрын
Denny's Aquatics Thanks! As far as the bacteria, I only start out with very low salinity (like 1.002) and increase it over time.
