7:00 dang that's a lot of taping. Could have clamped the stripes together instead of gluing them to smooth out the wavy portion. Then unclamp them to painted/burned each stripe separately. Clued or screwed the stripes together and then paint the stars on it.

Great job! i use a dremel for my flags and i found that using the 105 bit to outline the stars first makes them crisp. i will definitely try a chisel on my next one. It looks great!!!

What's the point of the belt sander when you just turn around and use the grinder on it 5:14?
@bensworkshop4195
@bensworkshop4195 3 жыл бұрын
The reason for the belt sander was to get as close to the marked lines as possible because the grinder is only used to hit the high uneven spots of the project.

I did this project around a year or so ago but if I were to take a guess most likely somewhere around 10-15 hrs of work including carving the stars on an uneven surface was a challenge.

Ok so where is the template
@Mark-oj7yt
@Mark-oj7yt 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Great job!! Looks Awesome ! The template is confusing to me. Having numbers on the right and the left. Can you explain in detail how you lay the template down on each board to get the correct outline? Thanks !
@bensworkshop4195
@bensworkshop4195 4 жыл бұрын
Of course! You actually do not need to mark both sides of the template, only one is needed. Once you have your template cutt out and ready just measure over 3/4” and mark it 1-13. So you should have a total of 13 lines each one spaced out 3/4”. The first stripe should be marked at the edge of the template, second at the first line, third piece at the second line and so on. So once you have all the pieces traced out they are slightly staggered to give you the wavy look to the flag and you will need to grind down the remainder of the wood to make it flow nicely.

One last question... instead of making 2 exact same templates couldn’t you of just traced and then slid the template over to where the line ended and continued tracing?

Mark Dusterhus yes you could easily do that as well, I suppose at the time I was building this I just wanted to have a continuous template to go off of considering I made mine larger than the original maker. Glad I could help!

Nice, but if your gonna use the other guys idea why not also use the turbo planer to knock down the waves, and be done in twenty minutes. Also why go out side the lines on the band saw? you should be able to use the other half to make another flag.
@bensworkshop4195
@bensworkshop4195 4 жыл бұрын
baddawg3 I try to use equipment that most people already have in their arsenal and don’t have to go out and buy a $150 piece of equipment they will only use once. In this case most people will only build this flag once so a $10 disc sander will suffice over the turbo planer. But you are right, the turbo is much faster!

What can you use if you don’t have a planer and jointer?
@bensworkshop4195
@bensworkshop4195 3 жыл бұрын
A planer isn’t needed and neither is a jointer. A jointer will just make the joints flat after cutting them on the table saw but with glue and tight clamping you will have no issues. Jointer is just a plus if you have it.

Great job, how do you print out the stencil? Do you have to enlarge it any or just print it as is
@benjaminlawlor9266
@benjaminlawlor9266 5 жыл бұрын
Steve Miller I had to lengthen the stencil due to the length I made the flag. The wave of the stencil I printed I used as is and transferred it to plywood first.
@Mark-oj7yt
@Mark-oj7yt 4 жыл бұрын
Benjamin Lawlor did you just duplicate the first template ? And use both templates when you traced out your stripes....I believe the original plans call for 31.5 length stripes and you did yours at 37
@bensworkshop4195
@bensworkshop4195 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Dusterhus yes I did duplicate the first stencil and just match it up to the butt of the first stencil. If the stencil doesn’t fit perfectly in the flow of the first stencil, overlap them to the point of which they match up and cutt the second stencil to match up to the end of the first stencil. I’m sure there may be other ways to do so but that is how I did mine. Thanks!

Benjamin Lawlor I’m getting ready to start building, but I have a question about the union area. My nieces school wants to know if I can put their emblem instead of the union? Is that possible? I have a pen that burns writings etc into wood. Any suggestions on how to get the emblem template on the wood so I don’t make it look like a 2 year olds drawing?? Thank you 😊

I saw one recently, entire flag surface is burned first then sanded lightly, thin coat of red paint added for stripes, star field is edge-masked then laid out with adhesive backed stars, blue background is over-sprayed then adhesive stars are removed. Not the same level of craftsmanship shown here but less labor.

Save yourself the hassle. Burn the whole flag and just lightly sand away the "white stripes" then just painters tape it to pain it.
