Thank you for making this video! My father has a very old 1994 Mercedes E220 for which the serpentine belt recently came off and immobilising the vehicle -- the belt pulley (which attaches to the belt tensioner) was damaged and came off during him driving the car, resulting in the serpentine belt being damaged (and the belt pulley being lost). We understood the general gist of the issue, but we lacked awareness of the part terms, the labour involved to fix the issue and the cost of the replacement parts. This obviously isn't a very good situation to be in as a consumer, and we were afraid of our ignorance being exploited by garage/mechanic staff (through inflated billing). Your awesome video helped us confirm the issue as well as educating us on the correct terminology to use with garage staff. After learning the correct terminology for the parts, we were able to successfully query for the cost of the replacement parts via Google and our findings matched the costs given to us by our preferred garage! Thank you for making this video and educating the general public! We appreciate your efforts! :)

I came here to learn your method that was quite helpful; I must say... I never changed one is why I'm here. I would just like to add to your video that if one uses an allen key, one should remove the hidden bolt completely and then release the tension to remove key. Rational: you can retrieve the key back and ready to reuse. removing the pulley with the key still propped inside is a tougher job to remove key. Thank you again for your help!

Saved my butt! The tensioner I have is like this one, and I almost made the mistake of following the Pelican instruction, which would have removed my tensioner instead of releasing it.

this video is very knowledgeable. I own a 2000 ML320 and I'm a woman. I love DIY projects but not really when it comes to my truck. I get scared and always have my guy friend to who I'm really close to refer me to his mechanic. since I see how easy it is maybe me and him and possibly do it together. (: thank you very much.

I am giving your video 2 thumbs and 2 toes up man. Thank you for sharing the knowledge. Thanks to your detailed instructions it took me less than 20 mins to replace the broken tensioner in my daughter's 2001 C240. Bought the serpentine belt kit online ($119.00 + $10.00 2 day shipment) so, thanks to your video I spent $129.00 parts and "labor" + the $4 beer I had while doing the job. You ROCK bud.

Thanks for your video. I know that serpentine belt replacement is a really easy fix, but I wanted to make sure that I wouldn't miss something, the car being German, and all. ;) The angles weren't great, but the lighting and instruction was! The "trick" with the Allen key was exactly what I was needing to know. Job well done, Sir! :)

So yeah I’ve been watching all these KZbin videos and reading for 2 days now. I don’t have a 17 mm bolt I finally was able to take a picture with my phone of the bolt that is under there, and it’s a 10 mm tork one. So for two days I have been trying to use a 17 mm socket on a 10 mm Torq. I don’t know if it’s because I have a really weird year I have a 2000 Mercedes E320 4Matic wagon. I cannot get this new belt on! And I already spent like $60 in tools

@timothybruneau4173 4 жыл бұрын
Ouch. I feel your pain buddy, but the 10mm Torx are the mounting bolts, the 17mm socket is simply what they put to flex the tensioner for removing/installing the serpentine belt. I'm about to tackle the same task on my 2000 CLK430, and yep it's hard to see under there. Hopefully you got yours done by now.

How do you diagnose a bad belt tensioner because something is causing my alternator to stop working,My alternator is new as well as the battery I just replaced the idler puller and it caused my alternator to stop working so I took alternator to get tested and it was bad so I put a new alternator in and a few days later it wasnt charging battery so I removed belt and played with pulleys put belt back on and all of a sudden alternator is working again so that is why I am asking you for advice on diagnosing a bad tensioner,thanks and great video by the way!
@Cyberdemon1985
@Cyberdemon1985 6 жыл бұрын
If the tensioner is bad, you will have slippage. You will be hearing screeching noises coming from the belt and or watching a wobbling tensioner pulley. Most likely, you had a DOA Alternator. Alternators I would buy OEM. Anything else, go with an aftermarket.

@Cyberdemon1985
@Cyberdemon1985 6 жыл бұрын
Just use a big plumber's wrench on the whole tensioner to remove the right bolt, or put the allen wrench, as in the video to hold the tensioner in place, and unscrew the two bolts. You may need a friend to help you hold down that plumber's wrench. Again the tensioner is only $35 after market.

any reasons why u should change tensioner?
@EXOVCDS
@EXOVCDS 8 жыл бұрын
+Ato Nympha It has a bearing that is non-serviceable (has a limited amount of grease inside of it). They will get noisy with age... and can seize-up & take out the belt. When replacing a belt, it is a good idea to change the tensioner, as it might not last the lifetime of the new belt.

I saw some prices. That tensioner damn thing is a $35 item. Forget the pulley... go for the whole tensioner. The new tensioner will last another 100K miles. Anything with bearings and the car is 100K miles, just replace it. Also, my c240 water pump that has bearings went bad at 68K miles. The new water pump part set me back $19.99 from ebay (this is no typo). This is because my car was sitting in some old man's guarage for years. A big no no since bearings needs to work and be lubricated. A sitting low millage car is worse than a highway miles car.
