At the slats that pull out. Maybe consider adding a stop so it won’t pull out all the way. Doesn’t have to be at all but maybe in the middle and the two ends.

Nice job I was looking for something like this for my cabin. Your instructions were easy. Might I suggest you put a 1x4 on the underside of your pull out slats that way it won't pull out when you fully extend it. Other then that great job.

You did a great job on this. The carpet makes it a little difficult, but I wonder if the slide was built out in more of a box with casters on the bottom, if it wouldn't roll a little better. It would also mean you could talk out the middle support in the sofa section and add a 2x4 to the back end of the pullout, so it wouldn't pull all the way off. We're going to work from this design and make one for our cabin. Thanks for posting!

Just did the final assembly today. Overall a nice product. My main motivation to use the design was I don’t have much time right now so is an easy quick solution. I do have it setting on felt feet, which helps the front in sliding, as well as an arm on both sides. We are using a futon. In the short term I am using additional pillows when in the upright position as a 90 degree back is a little uncomfortable. Since I have carpentry and metal working experience, am going to modify the back so it is angled and that angle is adequately supported. I think it will compliment your original design. Well done!

This is an excellent transitional bed from youth to teen. Several years ago, I built a 5 feet high platform bed for a granddaughter with a play area underneath. Two more granddaughters later, we are in need of space as the oldest is growing out of the playroom stage. This bed conversion would fit well underneath the existing platform and accommodate the two younger tykes handily in one room. Fast forward 9 years, and the youngest will inherit the bunk with an underneath couch as the oldest moves on to college... You come up with some very convenient ideas for confined spaces Glen. Thanks.. and keep the videos coming!

You can make that patio into a beautiful room by using 1/4 inch plywood sheets to enclose the whole walls. Then frame a window and bam. ☺ If you cant afford to do it all at 1 time enclose the bottom half all the way around the room and add the rest as you can afford it. Thats what im fixing to do. You can add a beautiful storage area off tje back of your house the same way too!

You could also add a drawer under the part that pulls out to store linens. Also foam from joannes is a great option for the seat. Cut to fit and cover with safety pins attaching fabric to the bottom (out of site), or if you're handy, sew a cover (ain't nobody got time for that). Very cool build sir!!!

Love this! It's perfect! I'll be building this for my 13 year old! Keeping it in Twin position, but I love that she can convert it to a sofa, if she wants, when she has friends over. It can transition to a guest room when she grows up and moves out, or she can take it with her for college, and move up to a full if she wants. Right now she's want to ditch her traditional type queen size for more bedroom space. Thanks so much for sharing your talents and skills!

Love this idea for a vintage camper I'm currently working on. I'll repurpose 2 fairly new twin xl foam mattresses, cut 1 in half lengthwise, and use it for the back cushion. Depending on the size I cut, I can go either full xl or queen. With slight modification, I believe I can also add a twin bed lift to it and have much needed storage under. nice design. thanks. suggestion. 1.find the cushions first then do your measurements for the sofa. 2. have your lumber yard cut everything to size. not that expensive & you save time and no mess to clean up. 3. put stoppers (engle irons) on the bottoms of the planks that pull out so you don't pull them off the track. 4. put teflon sliders under the pull out piece for easy slide and no marks on the floor.

The trick is that it's designed to a bed's dimensions, not arbitrary cushion sizes. If it's to fit a full bed then the sofa seat has to be at least half the width of a full bed. If a twin bed, at least half the width of that bed. There's a little fudging possible in both cases, as the seat can be a a little bigger with a shorter slide so if you luckily find cushions bigger than half your target bed size...

My son is 6'5'. the closed in ends would be an issue. This would be great for a custom size bed, just have foam cut to the right size, make covers and sheets for them. Too bad dimensions weren't given, but people can look up standard size beds for twin, full, queen etc. Not CA King because they are longer. Then make a coffee table with storage for bedding and pillows.

I just put this as a comment (at the end). You'd have to work out the measurements to see if it would work but it would be a permanent solution for a regular use bed that would take up no more space. You could just store the pillows and bed linen underneath. Thats fantastic! If you want an idea for the cushions you can buy mattress density foam/sponge I don't know what you call it in the US we can buy it from large fabric shops though you might have to go somewhere else for ones that size. You can get the foam for the base cut to the width and length of the sofa/couch when its closed. You can then get the back cushion cut in one piece also hopefully the height that fills in the rest of the bed when it's pulled out. Then either sew cushion covers for the foam out of upholstery fabric or get a seamstress or upholsterer to do it for you. If you go for removable cushion covers made from machine washable fabric you will be able to wash them. It would probably also be considerably more comfortable than putting an air bed on and make even the cushions part of the pull out bed. Just don't go for foam that is too soft or not dense enough. Hopefully the people selling it can advise you I don't understand density My mum and dad have a foam mattress (not memory foam) and it is over 30 years old and has only started to get less comfortable the last few years. Its been vacuumed steam cleaned and all sorts many times.

@@smithy4121 You could use a futon cover. When the bed slides out the futon will fall. Or... You could fold the futon for extra cushion when you're sitting and then unfold it when you lay. That might give a seam in the cushion though.

I have a Tylosand with the sliding system. Nice to see it built. You can store the linens, blow up mattress under the slide out. Make the stay back slide out liftable...this is how my Tylosand works.

you should put pieces of wood under the slots so it wouldnt fall off if you pulled it too hard

Same thought, wood or angle iron pieces to create a stop.
@andrewdrozd847

The problem with that is the sliding section has to pass the center seat support beam. You could put ears on the sliding section slats that sit in the spaces between slats, creating a T shape, and put stops on the top side of the front support beam. Only improvement I would add to the design.

yeah, just three pieces of wood on three slides and make small cutouts in the middle support beam and put a screw on each side of the cutout, no strenght is lost but it can slide out way further without being afraid it moves away at night, the stops doesn't need to be high, two, three centimeters are enough, the weight from the top keeps them where they are. But man that thing looks so nice, I think google read our minds, I'm planing all the time to make my own couch, but I can't remember searching for tutorials and now I get this one recomended xD And it is even better, this way I could have living and sleeping room in one and use the second one as working room and closet.

I've been looking for something like this for my apartment! However, I think adding some storage capability underneath the sofa/bed would be extremely helpful. Especially for me since I have no storage/cabinets and my closet is tiny!

I was thinking the same thing. A simple plywood L on the floor and attached to three (left, right, center) of the boards. If you do that put 1/4 inch thick by one wide running rails under the box for ease of movement. That or casters.

Notice the zigzag dowel hole pattern along the lumber. Also, salting a wet glued joint prevents the wet joint from slipping.... another great video Glen - thanks ALSO.. love the lights... I'm gonna make use of those down the back of my floor standing speakers....

Brooooooooooooo! Relocated for graduate school and have been searching for four MONTHS tryna find a store-bought apartment-size sleeper sofa but have been SO disappointed with the designs and costs and availability of what's being sold. Gave up on stores finally and just started the process of figuring out how I can make what I need for myself. Your video is the first I came across and it nearly brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for this is excellent instructional video. I'm filled with hope about what's possible

I love this idea! I need to build something like this but just to go around my twin frame, mattress, and boxsprings. I don't want the mattress to just sit on top of the frame.

I would've lowered the slates basically an inch in a half off the floor so the "cushion" can be a folded cushion. So it would fold into seating and then unfolded to make a twin/queen bed. That way the cushion can be pretty thick and have space so it wont overlap the backboard of the couch. So it will basically be a folded matress sitting inside(the lost underneath space) so there wouldn't be lost storage space underneath. If that made any sense 😐

Lenz that’s exactly what I was thinking. It means you’ll never be able to fully pull the end all the way out without having to break out the drill, which can be both a blessing and a curse.
