Just a suggestion. Make sure you have a landing outside your door upstairs. It can be dangerous to open and close a door right on the edge of steps/stairs.
@CarrieNita
@CarrieNita Жыл бұрын
My first apartment was built without the landing. It was terrifying just trying to bring in groceries. We had to move when I married a fellow with a wonderful 4 year old son. We thought we could negotiate the stairs until his son got brave enough to open the door without us there to supervise his descent. I have never ever been so tterrified. Please put a landing in.

Interesting. We live in a split level with two different doors that open directly to a half-flight of stairs. I've never found them scary or dangerous. Must depend on the angle or visual.

I, too, had a non- landing entryway at the top of 14 steps. Terrifying when trying to reach the door knob. We ended up using the back porch door.

How do all you people navigate basement stairs 😂 or even regular stairs 😂 Does putting a door up make the stairs disappear and then you’re shocked when the door opens?

As someone obsessed with natural light, I just have to say amazing choice to keep the only solid wall in the studio on the north side. That east/west exposure in the main space and then southern in the office is just *chef's kiss.* Congrats on the new build!

Such a cool project! You may want to look into getting a small A/C unit for the upstairs space since you're oriented towards the sun all day. Those windows are going to be wonderful for views, but the heat is definitely going to tick up quickly. Can't wait to see more!

Technology has come a long way to reduce radiant heat through the glass. Not sure about Canada, but the US energy code restricts the air leakage and radiant heat.

Congrats, Danie! This is awesome. When it comes to "insulating the crap" out of your garage, there is a way to add soundproofing to electrical boxes with a product called putty pads. It reduces vibration that can travel from one floor to another. I used it once when remodeling a home and I think it made a difference. Thanks for taking us along on your journey!

Danie, you are a kindred spirit. I am enjoying this build as if I was there the original time. Your " goofiness " is just perfect. The exact way that makes sence to me and my "goofiness". No need to explain to the ones who agree with you. Though the new fans will need your explanations. Thanks soooo much for this episode. A well done explanation.

When we moved from Philly to Charlotte NC we bought a new build house that we chose options like the layout brick and color way from a set of choices. We didn’t move until it was already built. But our second house we came by to watch and take pics the whole time and it was amazing to see. The biggest surprise was how different it looked when actual drywall and doors were added, so satisfying! Congrats on your new garage!❤

Suggestions: Always dry-in your building 1st. Roof, windows, and doors. Make sure you have a landing in front of that upstairs door for safety and check building code. We built a 28'W x 32'L x 10'H and good insulation and air sealing is essential. The biggest problem we have is the overhead doors leaking in cold weather. Oh and get rain gutters and snow breaks on your steel roof. 💯 excited to watch the process!

Yaay, garage build!! As the daughter of an architect and having gone through the build of a whole house, an addition and a garage, this video was quite nostalgic, though I don't think our 'Murican contractors ever oiled the concrete forms before. They would reuse the boards as is, but if they broke during the un-forming process? Oh, well! Really shows one of the many differences between our countries, right? 🤦‍♀️ Also, YAAY for new merch and a KiwiCo sponsorship! My mother-in-law started my daughter on a KiwiCo subscription when she was about three, and my girl only grew tired of it recently because she's now thirteen and her tastes in activities have changed, but she really loved getting the cool kits each month! I know lots of us are recommending all sorts of neat things to add, and may I throw in my two cents? I think one of those mini-split heat pump units would be a great addition to very efficiently both heat and cool the second floor. I can't remember exactly how costly they are, but if you get it to only make one floor habitable, it should be cheaper, and they don't need ductwork! This is a sort of dream addition to your second floor budget: a Solatube skylight! We had one installed in a windowless bathroom, and they are AMAZING. They're fully sealed, can bend through trusses like ductwork, and look like a pot light in the ceiling. I could see one of those in the center of your workspace, or maybe to light up your filming wall. Ok, ENOUGH outta me, many thanks to you and your awesome team for another inspiring video, much love to you and your family, and have a great week!! 🫂❤️

When I purchased my house there was an old garage that was not accessible for parking. I turned it into my office. Similarly, there are plans for plumbing but not immediately. So I made a composting toilet set up. It’s more work (monitoring, filling cover material, emptying) but it’s worked so well it might never get replaced. For washing I used a simple foot pump and two 5-gallons gerry cans. I also read a book called Humanure. I’ll leave it there.

Dani! How wonderful! I, too, love watching how things are built and/or created! And how professionals.can do their job so swiftly and done perfectly! A couple of thoughts - couldn't you make the She Shed into a gardening center? I guess the greenhouse does that somewhat; however, if also you have the garden center, you will have your tools, etc close to the front and not have to walk to/from the greenhouse. PLUS! A place to re-pot plants, and use as a place to dry lavender, herbs,etc. 2nd - instead of closing off your office entirely, how about a half wall, otherwise, with a floor-to-ceiling wall, you will miss out on the fabulous sunsets!! Or as another commenter, French doors, beauty, function and a way to let in light and still watch the sunsets. As always, is there anything you cannot do? Going to fantastic build! Can't wait until next Saturday!! Enjoy your day! Have a great weekend!!

Make sure to frame in areas you want to hang hooks that way you hit studs, frame in the area for the handrail so it’s exactly what you want, , extra framing for where you want curtains, put electrical up high to desk, electrical socket outside on garden side, plus since you won’t have plumbing right now you could do a kids Montessori style sink so you at least have water!

Ever since I was a little girl my dream was to build a house. We finally got to do that 10 years ago, in my late 50’s. I can’t explain how much I enjoyed watching it be built. We lived about 100 yards away and every evening after work we’d walk over and see what had happened that day. I wish I could have watched all day, but you know, work….but even so it was SO MUCH FUN! I hope you enjoy your build and how awesome to be able to do so much of it yourself. It’s really wonderful to be able to see it all come together.

Thanks for bringing us along with you Danie! I have no experience with building things but found it really interesting to see the process from the very beginning. I live in a more temperate climate hear in Northern California but still enjoy seeing how things are built to accommodate frost and harsher winters. Here everything needs to be able to move and flex in the event of an earthquake so I think we probably have different ways of building. Can't wait to see the garage come to life!

We installed our own windows (with help from dad who was a contractor) and when the seals failed, the company wouldn't honour the warranty because it wasn't installed by them. Just sayin'... How about a short term compost toilet with a foot pump sink? Mini frig for snacks, and a water dispenser /coffee and tea station? So posh, like a fancy camping trailer! I’m so excited to see all of these ideas come to light! The puddles upstairs on the floor did make me nervous though, all that water sitting there…

Until you get a full restroom/plumbing situation in order, could you do something like a composting toilet to get you by for those days running into the main house would be a hassle? What an exciting build! Will you have a garage housewarming with the neighbors?

I'm so excited for this series! Home reno is one of my favorite things to watch and do. I'm just worried about the roofing. Roofing always scares me because it's dangerous plus if it's done wrong there's leaks and bigger issues later. Love to see how y'all do it! 😘

I love watching construction projects and can't wait to follow your project. You and Jeffrey clearly have put a lot of thought and planning into this. I'm sure you've already chosen your paint colors, but if it were me, I'd have the colors match those on the house. Just saying.

I am studying Bioresource and Agricultural Engineering and I am taking structures classes right now. We just learned how to build rafters and trusses. This video was so cool to watch and follow the entire process. I can’t wait to see how this turns out!

Hey Danie. I love everything you talked about in your video. The only thing I would rethink is the partition wall. Closing up that one window might make it more cave like. Give it a try with sheets or tarp first. There are wonderful products out there that still let light though. Good luck in you build and I can't wait to see the finish product

Wow Danie! This is incredible! It’s looking great already, and I know it will just keep looking better as you complete each phase. Do you and Jeff have any experience installing windows? I ask because those are huge windows and I’m wondering how you’re going to lift them into place. (Not trying to be discouraging! Just curious.) We have similar windows and had them professionally installed, so I’ve got mad respect for you and Jeff for taking on this task yourselves. I’m guessing you’ll be renting scaffolding so you can access the second floor more easily. As someone who has spent the last 8.5 years slowly remodeling a fixer-upper house, I know how overwhelming and discouraging it can be at times (and we’ve hired a lot of professionals to help). So whenever I see someone take on a huge project like this, I want to hug them and remind them that they can do this and they will get through it. Sending hugs and encouragement your way. Can’t wait to see this whole project unfold. I know it’s going to be epic. Thanks for taking us along. To you and Jeff: remember to take breaks and do your best to keep a sense of humor. (sometimes not possible which is possibly an indicator it’s time for a break.) You got this!

Or if you are in Australia, we just don't wrap houses much at all. It's just an extra cost that builders don't want to incur. Excellent Truss construction. The whole structure looks great, and yes it is really really big!
