Deanna, I've enjoyed watching your videos. I never judge what others find beautiful. I would like to give my perspective. I was heartbroken to see this beautiful solid oak piece painted over. I literally cried seeing the final version. The original natural wood finish was in very good condition and would have taken little to restore its luster. It is becoming very difficult to even find solid oak pieces today or even actually find the good quality oak wood that was used to make this as the forests of old oaks have been so over harvested. I totally respect your right to do as you see fit and you certainly are talented. I would love to see you save these beautiful old pieces for those of us who would rather restore to its original glory. If it is this style that you like maybe you could look for the reproduction pieces that are made of plywood or MDF, etc. They certainly could use a cover up, lol! I LOVED your little Chi's wanting to be close to "mommy" while she worked. I've seen them in a couple of videos where they even were sitting in your lap while you worked. :) My little 4 lb Yorki does the same!

Thanks so much for watching my videos! I appreciate your feedback and respect your point of view, thanks for commenting. I'm sure you will see the Chi's again, they always want to be where the action is! It's not always easy to hold a dog and paint at the same time but I love having them around! I'm sure you can relate. Cheers!

I was heartbroken as well. I think that most of the people who do this type of thing don't know much about antiques or the history of these pieces. This was originally tiger oak which is a process that is incredibly labour intensive to produce. I actually own this exact piece and its stunning. It's such a shame to see it ruined. The paint job is lovely but there is no reason to paint originals when there are so many repros or antiques that are beyond saving. This is where you lost me. There are so many upcycling channels that are more respecting of original pieces and who are actually saving furniture to give it new life. This was just too hard to watch and it's sad that people don't really understand the value lost.

Yes, this piece looks it could've been my gram's. A pie chest I've loved was done in an ocean blue, all sun faded and beat up from moves, kids and animals. The inserts were time-aged brass, awl punched with plants. I also love creamy yellow to white. A fantasy piece is a pastel coral. You could experiment with shades of white, too. Yellow to cold white might not go, maybe yellow to cream. Your technique of adding a bit of the darkest color to the white would work, too.

Wow, what a beautiful piece. Is milk paint another type of chalk paint?
@DIYDEANNA4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karie! Milk Paint and Chalk Paint are similar in that they are both made for painting furniture and accessories. But they both contain different ingredients, Milk paint is it’s own type of paint, most of the time it comes as a powder you add water to. Thanks for watching!

The piece looks great! But I still want to see what else you have in mind for it, so I won't say it's complete. 😛 Reds/oranges/yellows might make for a nice fiery piece, perfect for a hot yoga studio or something. 🤔

I also worked as a faux finisher/decorative painter professionally for several years where I learnt many skills . I've never painted fabric before. I came across your channel looking for ideas for a wooden desk that I'm using as a makeup vanity. I want to add antique gold highlights to the desk to make it look more like a vanity vs a desk. I didn't want to sand or paint the entire desk. I wasn't aware of chalk paint and thought I'd look at different KZbinrs. I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel. (New subbie!)

For those who are looking to "upcycle" a piece of furniture and watching this video to learn the how to, PLEASE include the knowledge that antiques in good condition should never be painted over. This was heartbreaking. I think that most of the people who do this type of thing don't know much about antiques or the history of these pieces. This piece was originally tiger oak which is a process that is incredibly labour intensive to produce. I actually own this exact piece and it's stunning. It's such a shame to see it ruined. The paint job is lovely but there is no reason to paint originals when there are so many repros or antiques that are beyond saving. KZbin is full of upcycling channels that are more respecting of original pieces and who are actually saving furniture to give it new life. This was just too hard to watch and it's sad that people don't really understand the value lost. If you want a piece of painted furniture please stick to reproduction or older pieces that are beyond saving. It's a bit like buying a vintage Chanel 3 piece and taking it home, chopping it up and sewing a cute summer dress out of the fabric. Regardless of how cute the dress is, it's not a Chanel original...
@lindz916 Жыл бұрын
That's an awfully high horse you're on! Careful because a fall from way up there could be painful... Also, there is no "should not" in art, which includes furniture. Your opinion is simply that. If you prefer unpainted furniture, don't paint it, but telling others what to do with their pieces is laughable, and rude.
@LaughingInTiny Жыл бұрын
@@lindz916 It's akin to taking a can of spraypaint to a vintage Astin Martin. You just wouldn't. Unless you were either arrogant enough to think it didn't matter because you're a "car artist" or because you don't know anything about cars. And if you DID take a few cans of spraypaint to one I'm certain there'd be a group of people who supported your right to do whatever you want to it because it's your car, you're an artist etc. But a much larger group of people would freak out. And yes, those people would be on a very high horse. But their offense would hardly be laughable. Having an understanding and appreciation for refinement and quality is not expected from everyone. But nobody in their right mind would work on a high end classic car without the proper understanding of what they were doing.
