i've used the Sculp Wood system too. same sort of 2 part epoxy "clay". have used it for sooooo much wood repair. awesome stuff
@ruththomas6361 Жыл бұрын
That epoxy wood filler is truly great stuff. I broke the plastic feet on and otherwise great little piece of luggage. I put a bolt through the hole with one nut on the outside and one on the inside to make the new foot, but of course, that bolt was now a piece of metal with the potential of scratching or poking any surface it contacted. I decided to try to mold a new foot out of the epoxy wood filler around the exposed bolt. I made that repair about 30 years ago, and the "feet" still are intact (as is that great piece of luggage.) I painted the new feet black to match the luggage, and unless I bring the repair job to someone's attention, nobody would even notice them. Necessity is truly the mother of invention.

Especially since they've been selling defective goods this whole time and obviously they're not interested in correcting the misaligned hardware hole's anytime soon. I'm so sorry that company treated you so badly and I'm sure they are going to lose a lot of customers in the near future. But I for one, am very thankful you showed us a permanent way to correct their mistakes and it looks like it will make the lock's a lot more secure, than any other solution that I could think of. What a great product review your channel provided for the wood putty manufacturer in this very video. That company has surely just got a lot more customers, because you proved without a doubt the product was as described. As for the door company customer service person, they dropped the ball and totally picked the wrong customer to try and misled. Big oops. Quality speaks for itself. Always. I need to replace 2 exterior doors on my home. I definitely will other consider Stanley doors. Due to a recent robbery I will purchase steel doors. My home was built in 1967. For some reason I measured holes for the regular doorknob and the double cylinder deadbolts, of course they do not match the current steel door pre-drilled holes. Thanks to Ashley and Doug I know to invest in JBWeld epoxy to repair both doorframes. (I might buy extra since I doubt the hinges are in the same location. I neglected to measure those.) It seems no task is straightforward but thanks to this channel many of us are better prepared.

Doug and Ashley, I will tell you what I use for "wood filler" and it will hold forever. I take all the wood shavings I have (sawdust) and add it to mixed two part epoxy. I use tape where I need to protect the door. The nice thing is you can get it smooth with denatured or rubbing alcohol so you don't really have to sand too much. I can add any kind of "tint" (oil paint or titanium dioxide) to color "wood filler" so it pretty much matches everything around the area needing to be filled. It's cheap and I always have the two part epoxy on hand so I never have to run out to the store for filler.

I appreciate you outing Stanley door products for their poor customer service. It is not a small mistake, I would take the pictures to the big box store where you bought the door and talk to customer service they might like to know... You could also check the other Stanley doors they have on hand and see if they have the same defect. Take pictures, send them to Mr. Rude Customer Service... offer to make an in depth video. You did a great job with what you had to work with. I can imagine the doors and jams are manufactured in separate areas of the plant and the jigs aren’t calibrated-the jams may match some doors but not all and the company doesn’t care. As another person commented on this or the last video, it would have been easier for you if the jams had never been cut out.

As always, your work looks good, works great and will look perfect once the finish work is completed. I saw "no shrink" and thought, "We'll see." I couldn't tell you how many times I've used some type of filler or putty with the no shrink claim only to have it shrink, separate, chip and crack. I'll remember the JB Weld. Call me paranoid and not to worry you, but the back door in my last house was half window and the front door had a large stained glass window in the wall right next to it. I felt that someone could easily punch a hole through the glass, reach in and open both locks in those doors. Like yours, my home wasn't a tract home with neighbors pressed up against it on all sides and I knew I had prowlers due to coming home and seeing footprints in freshly fallen snow circling my home. My solution was to install a deadbolt that was keyed on both the inside and outside. I could keep a key in the deadbolt on the inside for convenience and remove it when I wanted to. (I have other security measures as well that I won't go into here.) I might come home to some broken glass, (never did), but no way could someone have opened either of those doors without using extreme force. You all are pretty good at planning things out and so have probably considered this and are comfortable so you can probably ignore my paranoia.
@garysuderman174 Жыл бұрын
For that matter the door frame is thin and anyone with an oz. of strength could kick it in. So if there was a worry about that it probably wouldn't cost much more to fix the damages caused by a break-in either way. I have steel enforced door frames with lag screws going into the wall framing studs about 6 inches long. But a dog works the best in my opinion.

Hey Doug, may I suggest getting some stock metal strip or security metal door jamb kit from the door hardware section at your local hardware store or Habitat for Humanity ReStore to reinforce the door jamb and to prevent kick ins. Most of the wood they use now is finger jointed pine and is not as strong as some of the old growth wood you might be removing. Sorry about Stanley, it’s no wonder people have lost faith in these companies, there is no pride in workmanship or in building quality products anymore. They just do what it takes to put out cheap and dirty junk (I would not consider a $500-600 door cheap either). You might want to take your complaint to another level past this front line gatekeeper-it’s really unacceptable that they told you to fix it yourself! Especially when the whole point of buying a pre hung door is that all the fine tuned fiddley fitting work has be done for you. Most of their production work is cut on the CnC and factory assembled so Stanley has Quality Control issues as well. I would figure your time, labor, and a portion of the transportation and delivery costs into the amount Stanley owes you and accept no less, $25 bucks sounds like a bit of an insult if you ask for my opinion. -Good luck Doug!
