I installed a Goodman 5 ton split system 18 years ago and its still working great. I ran the line set, built the plenum... installed all new duct work. The only thing I did not do was braze the line set and charge they system. *** NOTE *** It took several phone calls before some one would come and braze line and charge system because I installed the system myself. The business that did come out made it clear that if the system did not work it would be time and materials to fix. The service guy charged the system, looked around, asked a few questions and said I did a very good job and that he would hire me if I was looking for work.

Nice!! Yea it might take some time to get the right one man show hvac guy to do it, but even if you decided to do that yourself, I’m sure you would have done an awesome job. I’m going to be doing some videos on alternatives to brazing, like the push to connect fittings by zoomlock, and then using staybrite 8 solder. It requires a lot less heat, so no nitrogen flow is required, and you don’t have to lug around two tanks on every install.

Don't forget, pressure testing and using a vacuum pump on the lineset down to 500 microns is a must or you are potentially wasting your money then spending more for repairs. If a homeowner is going to install anything themselves, stick to furnaces. Coils and condensers (central air systems) are a bit more involved than just plug and play.

Man, you’re making me think I can actually do it. Looks so easy!! I’m a DIYer but thought furnace was one too far. At the same time, I’m so fed up with these repair guys I won’t even let them come to the house. Had an A/C issue with one and they ended up by two new ones after they “Looked at em”. Thank you, your videos helped me a lot. I put in a new Goodman furnace this year before the cold hit. On another topic: REPAIRS::I did find out that should there be a problem where I need to call a technician, it costs $145 for them to just show up which could rack ups hefty bill. And some people can’t afford the repair side either. I think it would be wise to design a system where you have 2 identical furnaces hooked up and ready to go in case #1 furnace has issues, you could turn off power to #1 and turn power on to #2,, then go back to bed, knowing your family is safe and warm. You can then fix #1 later and not have to pay ridiculous $145 labor rates.

Where I live, there is a local company that will let you order equipment online and pickup locally. I do have the EPA certification to buy and handle refrigerant. I saved about $4500 installing my own furnace, coil, plenum, and condenser.

I did a Goodman 100 Mbuh, two stage, 80% for $2050.- That includes the $100.- 24 ga riser and a 36” break; sheet metal, black pipe and valve. I am going to do another at my daughter’s. I reused the thermostat. I am really happy with HVAC Direct.

Question. What to do if the replacement furnace dimensions are not quite the same. For example, replacing a type C 21 inch wide furnace with another type C that is shorter by about 7 inches. Is it OK to put blocks underneath the furnace to increase the height?

thank you I am in the process of a furnace replacement myself I allready replaced the rented water heater for a used one I bought ( works perfect ) now Im looking at the 50 yr old furnace to replace just not sure what size as theres no labels or any info anywhere on the unit I think it must have come out of the ark, but I have pretty good problem saving skills and engineering and tool experience , actually the gas thing was easy with the water heater , I had to extend a pipe but with help from home depo guys guiding me on the right sealant for the threads and fittings it was a breeze , what I have to find out is what btus I need for the sq footage of the home for the right size furnace Im 75 yrs old but the mind is still in working order, thanks again

I bought a house furnace was gone.forced hot air,gas..I bought a goodman 100,000 btu single stage.went off the gas line that was already installed.lp..my one question is does the manifold and or line pressure need to be checked with a manometer before i fire it up? In Georgia we’re not allowed to directly connect the flex gas line inside the unit other than that everything else was fine to me👍.

It’s against the international gas fuel code meaning it’s illegal everywhere. Vibrations can cut through the flex line causing an explosion. It has happened before. This is exactly why this is not a diy project and should be done by professionals with legit knowledge and training.

What about the technical things, gas pressures, temperature rise and combustion testing that we train for as technicians. Also, some home warranty companies and insurance companies won't honor the policy without permits or being installed by a licensed contractor. Just something to keep in mind.

At the beginning of the install you turned the furnace of by the switch. I thought you need to close the gas valve first, wait a few minutes and then turn off the furnace by the switch. Correct me if I’m wrong it might only be for when you are servicing a unit and not replacing one.

You can totally install yourself. But I advise people to really make sure that they know what they're doing before they start it. I am just learning this under a plumbing, Heat, AC, gas, company rightnow. I was working with a gas fitter today. I installed a Carrier furnace. He had me doing the gas connections fittings and he would check on me. And I was extremely nervous. I was double checking and triple checking my connections. Testing for leaks. But I guess he said I did a really good job, because all of the gas lines were run perfectly he said. The job entailed that I had to remove the hot water tank in order to even get the furnace out because space was so tight.But I did a lot of it by myself for the first time. He was obviously monitoring, as it's the law in Canada, and I can't be working on gas lines without a red seal gas fitter with me, But I pretty much did it on my own and that was the goal today. I feel good. He was mostly doing the cutting of the sheet metal for the vents, and electrical today and not me, because he said that part had to be perfect. I'm learning a lot. And it feels good.

I usually build a transition from the new coil to the ductwork but if you are only replacing the furnace, you could build a transition from your new furnace to the existing coil. I’ve done it both ways.

I got the Goodman 2 speed with the Braeburn thermostat. It's only a heat furnace, no accessories. HD sold me 5 wire thermostat wire. Goodman says I need 8/18 wire. Who's right? Thanks, keep doing vids.

I didn’t know that about Goodman that is good to know. I replaced my system this summer, I used Frigidaire equipment that I had to purchase through a friend who is a licensed hvac contractor. My home didn’t have any ductwork so I had to install all of my supply duct through my attic and make a return. All in all it took me about 80 hours.

Thanks for the great video. I’m gettin. Ready to tackle this and am a pretty competent DIYer. Could you answer a question: Mechanically, the process looks straight forward. I’m wondering about sizing my furnace. My current furnace was undersized when I bought the house. It’s 45k BTU, the house is about 1500 sq ft, poorly insulated, has old windows and I live in the north. The house was a duplex when I bought it and I converted it back to a single family. Now this furnace can’t keep the 1st floor above 50 degrees in the winter running constantly and set to max. My question is- I found an 80k that will fit in the space and attach to the plenum very easily. How much do I have to think about gas supply. I’m only supply this, a 40 gallon water heater, and a gas stove. Should I be ok? Also- the manual has a start-up procedure that references measuring the pressure and adjusting the valve. This seems technical. I’m wondering if that’s a fine tuning adjustment and if I’m likely fine with factory settings. Long comment. Thanks for the feedback and great videos!

Thanks for reaching out! Yea you will be fine using the existing 1/2'' gas line. As long as you have sufficient return air you will be fine, I have upped many furnaces and have yet to run into one where the air flow inhibited it from working like it should. On the gas pressure, people on here are constantly criticizing my install videos for not showing the gas pressure check procedure but I have yet to have a Goodman unit that was way off out of the box. @@McLivin410 funny you should ask. I just got my duct cleaning equipment in, you could duplicate what I have, somewhat, with a shop vac, and a compressor. If you have those two things you be ups make it work. The way it works is you start with each supply vent and you run your air hose down all the way, and then it has an air ball that pushes air toward the direction you are pulling it back, and then you have your vacuum at the floor vent to suck all the garbage and dust out. You do that for each vent, and then for the supply you turn the fan on and blow it toward the furnace, and the air filter catches everything, so when you are done with all the returns, you shut the fan off, and vacuum out where the filter was and replace with a new one. Pretty easy. I will have a video coming out very soon that explains this whole process so stay tuned! Cheers

No combustion air needed unless you are running a 96% furnace. This one was an 80%. And furnaces are rarely ever anchored, the ductwork and the weight of the unit is plenty to keep it in place, just like an outside condensing unit.

Q: Looking for new & simple direct vent (no chimney) gas BOILER (80% efficiency is fine) (not a furnace) that has best shot to last 20 to 25 years and is low maintenance - zero bells and whistles. My focus is not efficiency. Priority = low maintenance and longevity. Currently running 1991 Slant Fin V90 - 80% Direct Vent - baseboard forced hot water - has been excellent, but time to change out. Thoughts, guys/gals? TY!

Dam. I just had mine replaced by someone my neighbor knows. He charged me 5k for parts and labor for an 80,000 BTU 96%. Is that a good price? I’m pretty handy but I don’t know much about gas furnace so I didn’t try it myself. After watching this video it doesn’t seem too hard. Especially when I have all kinds of tools.

@@diyhvacguy - I bought a GOODMAN furnace yesterday, and it has a blower for the exhaust. I can't use the chimney (or can I?) because the hot water tank is tied into the same chimney on the other side. The furnace may blow carbon monoxide out of the hot water tank flue. I may have to take the GOODMAN back and get a 96% GOODMAN instead, and use the PVC flue pipe and go out the side of the house. I am replacing an old furnace that is over 70yrs. old.

Don’t know if anyone mentioned this but you should not be putting two wires together under one screw on the switch. The correct way is to pigtail the two wires with a short pice of 14 gauge in a wire nut and connect that short wire to the switch.

Your customer got the Goodman GM9s801005cn 100,000 BTU, 80% furnace, I bought the 80,000 BTU 96% to replace the 35 year old Lenox 100,000 BTU G11-e which was 80% and also took it's combustion air from the room which was a pain, the old flue used to sometimes push cold air down depending on wind, so I think what I have now is so much better- taking it's air from outside, and 16% more efficient. My NW Iowa house is about 1,100 sq ft but I have R100 in the attic, all double glas windows, and the walls are at least R21 as I added 2" of celotex on the inside over the old plaster and lath exterior walls, and sheeted with 1/2" CDX topped with 1/2" sheetrock. It was down in the teens recently and the Goodman is working fine, it doesn't seem to need to come on a lot or frequently to hold the temperature right on 73 degrees

My two cents: I will avoid EMC blower. It is too expensive to repair. For 1100sq ft and high insulation. You need about 50-60KBTU. If you have 2stage 95% PSC 70KBTU, will do fine and may run in first stage most of the time. I have 1600Sqft raised ranch in upstate NY with GMV95 70K two stage which hardly go to 2nd stage and can bring up house temp up two degree in 8 or 9 minutes. On 10F outside temp cold night my furnace turn on every 20 min for 8 min and always stay in first stage i.e. 55K BTU. Leaking condensate water from the plastic cover is a common problem with the Goodman 95% gas furnace.

@@diyhvacguy One of the things I've heard mentioned in several other furnace vids is the life of the furnace depends more on the quality of the install rather than the brand, but they never really specifically define what they mean by that. Maybe a few videos expanding on what makes a high quality furnace install with all the i's dotted and t's crossed that shows what details some people might use to cut corners and how to do it exactly right.

Just curious, why did you need to carry and use 2 different cordless drivers? They are both very similar but does one do something the other doesn't, and would you not be able to complete the job without both?

The Malco turbo Sheers work really well with the impact gun. I don’t think they would work good with my little right angle drill. The right angle drill is good for zip screws in hard to reach places. Everything could definitely be done with one driver for sure. It highly recommend a stubby hand held 5/16” and 1/4” driver. If you have any other questions don’t hesitate to ask! Cheers

I changed this. Didn’t realize that was a code violation. Not exactly sure why 🤔 but yes the black pipe should come out of the furnace, then a flex line between that and the main black pipe supply line.

What about installing duct work. I bought a home that previously had a boiler system. . Everything was removed before my purchase. Can I install my own duct system, trunk, returns, etc???

Probably would not pass an inspection. Can not run a gas flex line into the furnace it self. You need to run gas pipe at least for the inside to the outside of the furnace. Also where I live it’s code to use a drain pan and wet switch. Other than that I think for a DIY project you did pretty solid. Just a couple things I noticed myself. Running a flex gas line in through the furnace like that can be dangerous and you really don’t want to mess with that. Honestly if you’re someone looking to DIY heating and cooling stuff, maybe look into mini splits that are all electric where you don’t have to worry about gas piping and possibly blowing your house up if you do something wrong.

This is not a diss, just a question since I’m not as familiar with furnaces. With that being said, I’m fairly knowledgeable within these types of machines since I’m a steam/hydronic boiler contractor in CA. Anyways my question is, do you not have tune air and gas pressures to achieve a satisfactory emissions? Or even to check that the pressures are setting are correct? This could have been done off camera I suppose. However, I didn’t see you fiddle with the gas valve at all. My main concern is telling weekend warriors that changing out a furnace is as easy as 1, 2, 3, and then having them flood their house with carbon monoxide because they actually have no idea what they’re doing.

Hey thanks for the question. The biggest thing is just making sure making sure the gas supply does not have leaks. The furnaces have safety festures, IE rollout switches and limit switches, and flame sensor, so the reality is they are very safe right out of the box. Every home should have a CO detector, that goes beyond having a profession install or not. There should be CO testers on every floor, and 10 ft or less from every sleeping quarters. As far as the gas pressure, I haven’t seen a single gas valve that was way out of spec, but yes I always check the gas pressure and static pressure now, and I learn something new with each install. I installed my own furnace 35 years ago, looking to replace it. But the warranty on Goodman says it will not cover unless installed by a licensed contractor. How do you get around that?

If it’s 5 years old, Goodman will honor the out of box warranty. You can’t just waltz in And get a part however, a contractor would have to diagnose it, being the part in and get the new one. So you would still get parts free under warranty, but the you’d still have to pay the contractors labor. I do this ALL the time.

Large hvac companies do not prey on people😂 nobody works for free. I get peoples frustration about 5 grand for a furnace and ac but that’s because they don’t install goodmans. Their aluminized heat exchangers pit and are generally just awful. I’ve seen more defective Goodman heat exchangers this winter (around 32) than I’ve seen from Lennox, Bryant, and Rheem combined (about 25). If you can install your own try to get an Amana. It’s a branch off Goodman but their heat exchangers are a little less shit. 80% furnaces also take no brains to install. High efficient furnaces are harder and take more precision. Overall I agree with this guy though. Anybody can install and 80% furnace.

I have a quick question for you. I had a new furnace installed in my house. I decided to keep the old electric cleaner, but now the electric cleaner is on all the time. Of course I can turn it off manually but with the old furnace, the electronic cleaner turn on only when the fan was running. Is still possible to be able to do that with the new furnace because I don't like the idea of having the electronic cleaner on all the time. I was told that I don't have the option anymore because of the new furnace. Is that right? Thank you so much.

Are you talking about a UV light cleaner? If the old furnace turned it on when the fan was on then I’m sure it can be wired to do the same with the new furnace. Do you see what wiring is going to the uv light?

@@diyhvacguy No. The Electronic Air Cleaner zaps the dust when dust goes thru the fins. The Electronic air cleaner is between the furnace and the return air duct. There is an on/off switch close to the furnace. When I turn the switch off, it turns off the electronic air cleaner, the furnace and the thermostat at the same time. I am pretty sure with old furnace the air cleaner turn on and off at the same with the fan of the furnace.
