DJ Tutorial, Beat matching Practise
www.djtutor.com/mixing1
remember to do this for quite a while, not just a few min and over time your ears should get used to hearing if one toon is faster or slower than the other.

I just wanted to thank you for all your great tutorials. Yesterday I had my first gig within a year of practicing and it went wonderfully well! Your videos (especially the ones about beatmatching and not looking on the BPM counters) helped me a lot to get started. Most important is the passion and loving what you are doing and you really manage to get that vibe across. Keep up the good work and inspiring future DJs who really want to get started. Respect!

@ReboyGTR Try having both songs playing through the headphones at the same time. Sometimes the main system, or whatever speaker is playing the main track, can have a delay behind what your hearing in your headphones. So if this is the case, the cued track will be slightly faster then the one playing whether they are beatmatched or not. So just try using the headphones only, either both tracks in both ears at the same time or one track in each ear. Hope this helps.

@Omanastylez I've tried split cue and it really helps,but i also want to learn how to mix with single ear monitoring! The monitors (computer speakers)are right next to my ear,or at least so close a real monitor would be in a club and even though i matched the beats,they still go of!

I used 2 do a simular thing when i 1st started. But wen djs are doin it this way they dnt kno if they have they got it spot on. My advise would be to: burn 2 of the same cd's play same track on both cd decks put the pitch on deck A without looking.. e.g it on +5.25 match the same track on deck B Take the stickys off and then u can see ur result. If u had it on +5.15 u kno ur a tad slow, +5.75 u kno ur too fast, If u have it on the +5.25 u kno u got it spot on In this method u learn.

@griffinherbst in my case, if I work with cdjs, i prepare my tracks or search for extended versions, which usually include enough headroom and trailing beats for good mixing. You shouldn't use compilation, radio or short versions for mixing.

I'm not a dj I am a music producer. So I'm not familiar with dj skills but I know about music theroy and stuff like that. My question just out of curiosity, I know when I'm making a record if I'm usinng say a guitar sample and get it at the right speed it will still make the whole track sound bad if it is nit in the right key. Does the same apply to djing?

(i have audio technica ad700's right now but im getting a different pair for mixing / shows.)

You can also try to use exactly the same tune ... then u will hear a "phasing" sound when its perfectly beatmatched :) What do you guys do if you have changing BPM on one track ? For example if youre mixing tracks, that have already been mixed.

@Rayven_cat
@Rayven_cat 13 жыл бұрын
@griffinherbst that has always been the challenge of being a dj. What you need is a tweener track. One that goes nicely with the two that clash. So you mix in your tweener track and then mix in your other track. Not all tracks go together, if they sound bad together don't just force it, that sounds bad. Vocals on vocals rarely sound good together, unless they are complementing each other.

OK - I've been DJing for quite sometime now (and I think I now make reasonably good mixes for fans worldwide). Here's my 2 cents on the beat-matching technik I've adopted: 1) Song 1 Playing on Deck A - you are getting ready with Song 2 on Deck B. Set the CUE point of 2 at the start of a Beat (use Headphones!) 2) Drop 2 in(via Cue > Headphone) at the Beat of 1 and try to rotate the wheel to catch-up/slow-down. Observe the direction of rotation of jogwheel & move the Tempo accordingly! 3) Done!
@turbomax
@turbomax 15 жыл бұрын
actually this "ohasing" sound will indicate, that your tracks are running slightly offbeat, but only by such a small ammount that you won't hear any difference exept for the phasing-sound. concerning different bpm in one trakc there is no "allround-medicine" you have to know your trakcs and know when a break or tempo change comes. but actually it is almost impossible to keep them in beat when one track changes its speed. so when that change comes, you should only have this track playing.

on the back of the mixer find the output marked REC simply connect a phono to 3.5mm cable to it. the 2 ends to the mixer and the headphone jack to the line in of the pc then get some recording software like Audacity set the volumes and record... simple!

@ReboyGTR Well if thats the case, it is likely that they are not beat matched perfectly. Ellaskins video on riding the pitch is a good one in teaching you a good way to match songs perfectly. Perfect beatmatching (beat lock) takes a bit of time during the mix. However, make sure you are using quite a small pitch range on your gear (6 - 10%), as this will make it easier to match the beats accurately.

Hi Geroge, Not really, if u turn on "Key Lock" / "Master Tempo", you will see that hear track speed changing, but keep same Key, even if u are mixing a song with vocals. So first u have to find and match BPMs like "ellaskins" shows on video, later u have to press play on rigth beat (songs changes every 16/32 beats, thats rigth time to press Play and start you mix), u can find "ellaskins" videos about that. DId i help?

I think the SYNC button is Plan B. When all else fails and you can't match the beat up, the sync button is there to help. On the other hand though, it's a shitty, glitchy tool.

Scott V true that, my younger sister got soon her first gig, she does beatmatching, but is really insecure about her skills, i told her try it but when it goes way way to much off train wrecks, and you would like to keep it sync just hit sync or leave the track out. Is the track hard to mix, focus on beatmatching but be ready to hit sync when you need to. I also think the sync button comes in handy to check track out fast, if drum rhythms breaks fit or not. Some tracks you can match them, but cause way different drum patterns they sound horrible.

basically alot of songs change bpm, so bpm reading can be really different, there could be a "real" bpm meter as in exact moment, or their could be an "average" bpm meter.. so im guessing your cdj's show the "real" bpm if im wrong someone correct me, but im pretty sure thats right! hope that helped!

@uttula: but you still don't know that relative difference between them, since you are changing both pitches on both decks randomly. And the bpm counters are hidden. Your movements doesn't judge the offbeat, and the amount needed to match, thats your ears' work -with a little help from the brain hopefully-.

dnb is not easier to match! it depends on how much you are into dnb. the only thing you have to listen to is the snare on 2 and 4. but, sometimes in some tracks oyu have so called "ghost-snares" so the snare isn't played or slightly after the 2nd or 4th beat... you just have to get a feeling for it. practise!
